moderated Email only footer for users without http/s access #suggestion

Please consider adding an optional system footer that does not contain any http/s links for members who are connected to the Internet over slow speed HF radio or satellite links and are only able to send and receive email.

Being able to subscribe / unsubscribe with a simple email without the need to visit the groups.io web site is valuable.  Adding these links into the current system generated footer is not an acceptable work around as there is a requirement to reduce message payload to an absolute minimum.  The transmission speed is 1200bps in most cases!

Compatibility with the distant past I know, but please give this request serious consideration.

For example, a footer option to contain ONLY the text below would be most helpful:

GROUP EMAIL ADDRESSES

Post: grp-name@groups.io
Subscribe: grp-name+subscribe@groups.io
Unsubscribe: grp-name+unsubscribe@groups.io
Group Owner: grp-admin+owner@groups.io
Help: grp-name+help@groups.io

This sounds like a candidate for the Advanced Preferences panel of each member's Subscription page. Next to the Max Attachment Size option, which is also intended for the benefit of members with slow and/or metered connections.

It could be a checkbox named "Use email addresses in footers" or something of that sort, with an explanatory sentence. It could apply to both Individual Messages and Plain Text Digests. Maybe Fully Featured digests also, but that seems a poor choice for the target users.

Peter -- Set your group to Plain Text Only (Message Formatting block) and no clickable hyperlinks will be sent.

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

The group is already set to Plain Text Only in the message formatting block, but message footers still contain clickable hyperlinks to http pages.

Peter

By definition, the plain text messages sent by groups.io cannot contain hyperlinks. If recipient's email client sees a link address and converts it to a hyperlink, that's another matter...but that behavior is not in groups.io's control.

Raw source below.  It is reasonable for an email client to hyperlink the unsubscribe link, there is no way the user can unsubscribe using email.

Most email clients will recognise a hyperlink in a plain text email and
make it clickable. They don't always get it right....

I think what was being asked was that the email commands for
unsubscribing etc should be shown so they can be used (clickable
mailto: or whatever, remember if they are they they can still be
manually typed in a new email). The existing links to the web interface
are no use for email only users who have never set a password for web
access.
