moderated #Bug picture attachments severely pixelated #bug

Donald Hellen

I remember we had some issue with this a few months ago (?) and it went away. I
received two posts in one of my groups that had 3 pictures attached, but they
were so severely pixilated I could not make out what they were supposed to be
pictures of.

I went to the group web site and saw placeholder boxes in the message but no
pictures.

Is anyone else seeing this? These are two of the messages affected by this. I
think non-members can view this. On the site you won't likely see the pictures.

I grabbed the original email and tried to parse it. The images included in it are bad and aren't recognized by my Mac as JPEG files.

I'll report this to the person who attached the pictures and if needed, get back
to you here on this.

Thanks!

I sent a test post. The group site shows my two attached photos. The email I
received did not have them. I'll try again. Maybe I need to allow some time
before getting messages after sending one with attachments? I checked for
messages seconds after sending the message with the two pictures.

I checked again and both pics are in the test email (post) from the group.
Please ignore the previous message.

Donald,

They must have done something weird either as copy-paste or SaveAs, not sure, because the files are JPEGs but for some reason also contain an RDF file's data in them, hence they're invalid and won't open or display anywhere. (except a text editor)

Cheers,
Christos

We've found in our testing that these pixelated photos only happen when they go
through GIO. When sent directly to our two testers, these pictures appear
completely normal. Something in the processing at GIO seems to be causing a
problem. Why it only seems to be happening with this member's photos is a
head-scratcher to me.

This is the latest attempt by the member to post an image. The image, when sent
directly to me or another member, comes through correctly. When it is posted on
GIO, it is pixelated.

The member would like Mark to contact him off-list to help sort this out.

Donald,

I don't know why - maybe it's just me? - but I can't see that attached photo at all, except in the emailed version of it.  Viewing the same message from the web interface, there is just a narrow rectangle (narrower than the attached photo was) with the small, square dummy icon that means "missing image here" or something like that.  It is not the very pixelated and colorful image that came through in the email version of that message.

This is one reason why I don't like attached photos.  They don't always work.  Apparently (again, maybe it's just me), they might not work in GIO's web interface, when using Chrome web browser.

I would attach screenshots here of what they look like to me, but I have no faith that the attached photos will work.

I looked for the photo in that group's Emailed Photos album, but it's not there!  (Why not?  Was it deleted from the Photo Album since yesterday?  If it was, I think that would explain why we can't see it now.)

But if I scroll through the Emailed Photos album, it seems there are other examples of severely pixelated photos, sent by other group members, so it would appear that this problem is not unique to only that member named Dan.  These other severely pixelated photos (e.g., https://ham-antennas.groups.io/g/main/photo/0/40328.8841.1/001.JPG, but you must be a group member to see the contents of the Photo Album) look like damaged JPEG files, or badly-received SSTV.  Opening the above photo (001.JPG) in a text editor, it looks almost normal until finding a few lines of what looks like HTML, or a list of URLs.  Maybe that's embedded EXIF data?  I don't know.

I take that back.  Those other severely pixelated photos probably did originate with Dan, but were re-sent in follow-up replies by others who quote the entire contents of earlier messages, attachments and all.  Sorry about the misdirection.

Ok, I've found and fixed the problem. The image was being sent as having a windows-1252 character set encoding. We were dutifully decoding the image and converting the data from windows-1252 to utf-8. This was garbling the image data. But images don't have character set encodings, they're just data. The image shouldn't be sent with any character set encoding specified. So, now we just ignore any character set specification for images, audio and video.

This message was sent using a version of Thunderbird, I think. I'd consider this a bug in Thunderbird.

This fix is not retroactive, unfortunately, so any existing garbled attachments will not be fixed.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Thanks!

I tried to get the member involved here and provide examples here, but for some
reason, he was uncooperative.

I doubt he will be feeding this back to the Thunderbird organization. Is there a
channel for you to do so?

Donald
