Block dislallowed file uploads on attempts #suggestion

I had a group member try to upload a lot of files, only to have me tell him later that members can't upload files in my group. He told me the system let him (apparently) upload all the files, without telling him he couldn't, and he didn't realize they weren't there until I told him that group members couldn't do it. I haven't yet tested this as a non-mod, but the group member tends to be credible (I will test/confirm later if I have time). If what he says is correct, it seems that the file uploads should be stopped at the point the person tries to upload, rather than just letting them think they successfully uploaded without any notification or blocking.

If the group is set so that members can't upload files, there's no Upload button/list for them to use.

That’s weird. Thanks, Duane. I wonder what he did.

I just tested this and I'm calling it a bug now. I logged in as a non-mod, went into a folder and tried to upload a file. I was not blocked at all. The upload button, and all the relevant buttons, were there, and it let me proceed with the upload. But of course, nothing actually happened.

I bring this up again because I just noticed another of my group members saying she "uploaded" her cat's bloodwork. And I again had to tell the person that's not possible and she has to send it in a message. (Which she has not done yet, thus requiring yet another reminder on my part.) So I hope this can get fixed with some priority.

Thanks.

I confirmed this behavior on my site yesterday. The non-qualified account is allowed to upload, but when the folder is checked afterwards, the file is not there.

It is confusing since the uploader has no idea that the process didn't work.

Right, and even telling them and asking them to send the file in a message often falls on deaf ears, since they're so sure they uploaded it.

What is the actual setting for Files in the features panel?  When I chose the 3rd one, "Members can view files, moderators can create folders and upload files", there was no Upload button.  I didn't try any of the other settings to block uploads.

Same as yours. Aother person here in beta has now confirmed the behavior, and it's totally reproducible in my group, by my own tests and two very recent reports by group members that they "uploaded" their files. One specifically pointed out to me that the system allowed him to do it, but that when he checked, nothing was there.

This is very odd.

I wonder whether it has to do with going into a folder first? Either way, the upload button should not be active, whether they're trying to upload a file directly, or into a folder. I haven't separated it out into cases but it should be a blanket gray-out.

Bingo!  I created a folder to test.  The folder was set to allow anyone to upload, though Files was set to not allow it.  The Upload button exists in the sub-folder, though it doesn't actually do anything (except giving the appearance of allowing an upload), but not in the main folder.

Duane

Bingo. I had a suspicion about that but hadn't had time to test it yet.

Wait! What? Do you have to set each folder separately? The default for folders should be the same as for files, unless the user changes it. I'l check my folder settings now. I think this needs to be fixed, if folders default to "members can upload" even if the group setting is that they can't.

Also, Duane, in the cases where my group had the problem, there is definitely a bug, no matter what the settings. Because the user is allowed to hit the upload button, but there is no resulting file and absolutely no record of anything in any activity log. Nothing happens.

Ok re-reading more slowly. I see  you're agreeing with me. It's not that the folder "was set to allow anyone to upload." It doesn't actually allow it.
So all that needs to be fixed is graying out the upload button for folders as well as files.

I tried another combination.  Uploads not allowed as before, but created the folder so that only mods and I can upload.  With that combination, the Upload button doesn't appear for other members.  Since you're not allowing others to upload, recreating the folders with that setting should make the button go away, preventing further confusion with your members.  (I didn't see a way to change the behavior of the folder after creation, so recreating would be the only way to change it.)

Duane

Duane,
Thanks for the ingenious workaround but it would be totally impractical in my group. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of folders.

This has been fixed.
