Change in "New Subscriber" Moderator Notifications? #misc

Andy I

Was there a change on March 6 in the way that certain Moderator Notifications are being sent to us?  Did I miss that?

Prior to March 6, "New Subscriber" emails to Moderators were addressed to the moderator's own email address, as they should be.

Since March 6, those same "New Subscriber" (and "Unsubscription" and "Rejoined") emails are now addressed to "<groupname>@groups.io" instead.  But I think they still go to Moderators only.  They are not actually sent to the address in the "To:" field.  Or, if they are, they all bounce, because the sender ("noreply@groups.io") is not a group member.  (But if that were the case, why don't I see them as Bounces in the Activity log?  Does Groups.io filter them from going to the Activity log?)

Other Moderator Notifications (e.g., "File ... uploaded") still arrive addressed to our own email addresses.  It seems to be only the subscription notifications that were changed.

This change surprised me, because it affects how Gmail filters my incoming emails.  I wondered why those messages seemed to stop coming.

Do others see this?  Why was it changed?  How did I miss that?

I'm not seeing this, all the various notifications I've gotten show Group Notification <noreply@groups.io> as the sender and me as the To:

Do you have a screenshot to share?

Cheers,
Christos

Please excuse me for saying this -- but what exactly do you suggest?  Do you need visual proof that I'm not lying, or that I don't know how to read the "To:" header line?

My Gmail Filters see the same thing as my eyes, that the "To:" address changed on March 6.  The Filters attach Labels (similar to Folders in other email programs), and that Labeling changed on March 6.

That is interesting that your group's notifications are still addressed to your personal email address, whereas mine are not, and that is with 2 different groups.  A third group where I co-moderate has not had a new subscriber since before March 6 so I don't know if it is the same or not.

Can you show me a screenshot of your recent "New Subscriber" notifications?  :-)

Andy

I tested it with two other groups where I am a moderator.  All four groups behave the same:  Moderator notifications (for subscribe/unsubscribe events) now are addressed to the group's email address, rather than my own address.

I'll try to whip up some screenshots later.

Weird.

Are you sure it's date-related? Your examples are from two different groups. Check your subscription in these groups to see if they differ in your "Members" notification setting.

Frankly, I cannot see how you're getting the notification by email at all, unless you're being BCC'ed.

Regards,
Bruce

Absolutely.  All the subscribe-related notifications before midday on March 6 were addressed to me.  All of them starting midday on March 6 are addressed to the group's email address (but they still come to me).  It was a distinct changeover and I can see no overlap whatsoever.

No, look again.  They are the same exact group.

Same group, so it has the same settings as itself.  As far as I know my settings did not change.  Anyway, I am still receiving the notifications; the only thing that changed, is what is in the "To:" field of those emails sent to me, over which I believe I have no control.  This is a Groups.io thing, it's something on Groups.io's end, not a user setting.  And it only affects the subscription-related notifications, not the File- or Photo-related notifications which are still being sent "To:" my email address, both before and after March 6.

I get them because I am a Moderator of that group, of course!  My "Moderator Notification" settings include "Email and web/app" for "How to be notified when a member joins/leaves this group."  Therefore, I am supposed to receive an email every time anyone joins the group, or leaves the group.

Also, now I get "New Subscriber" email notification if I approve membership via email, but not if I approve via web. Previously I did get those email notifications if I approved via web too.

Also, see complaints on [GMF] that instead of "removed for marking a post as spam" and "rejoined" email notifications, now moderators get two identical "rejoined" notifications:

Yes, it appears there was a change but because I received the expected notifications, I had not noticed the change in the To field.  A new subscriber message I received on 6-Mar at 18:06 was addressed to me but the next one received on 7-Mar at 06:50 was addressed to the group.

This should be fixed now.

Thanks,

We try to not send you a notification based on an action you yourself did. As part of the internationalization project, I've been modernizing all the various notifications and addressing some technical debt, in some cases replacing code that is close to 10 years old. In this case, getting a notification based on an approval you did via email was a bug, and I've fixed it.

I'm happy to revisit the idea of not sending you notifications based on your own actions. If so, please start a new topic.

Thanks,
Mark

Yes, as part of the internationalization project, I've been addressing some technical debt with all the various notification systems. That caused the changes you're seeing. I'll fix that, but it may not happen until tomorrow.

Mark

Hi All,

I just pushed the fix so that notifications will have personalized To fields, as was previously the case. Please let me know if you see anything out of place.

Thanks,
Mark

I noticed that they are back, an hour or so ago.  Seems good, so far.  Thanks.

I'm still not getting "New Subscriber" notices as before, regardless of whether I approve a new member by email or via web.

If you're the one approving them, you won't receive a notification.
