moderated Web/Online FOLLOW topic workaround at the group level

Christos G. Psarras

There are a couple of roundabout URL-modification ways to allow you to follow/unfollow a topic in any group you are currently perusing, not just at the All Groups-All Topics pages, and if done in a new tab, both methods allow you to continue where you were in that group.

Method-1:
-You are in some group reading a topic (if you are in message view you'd need to switch to topic view) and you see a topic you like; open that topic in a new tab and switch to it.
-Append ?allview=1 at the end of the URL and press Enter.  (if the URL already has existing parameters, use & instead of ?)
-This changes the page view to look and behave the same as the All Topics-Topic page you would get if you had trekked out of your current group topic page to All Groups-All Topics, found that topic in the list, and clicked on it.
-Click on Follow/Unfollow and when done, close the tab and you'll be back at the same place in the group you were before.

Method-2:
-You are in some group reading a topic (if you are in message view you'd need to switch to topic view) and you see a topic you like; open that topic in a new tab and switch to it.
-Since you have the <topic_ID> number in the URL, you pretend you are an email user: modify the URL to https://groups.io/ft/<topic_id> (to follow) or https://groups.io/unft/<topic_id> (to unfollow) and press Enter.
-This will take you in the same Follow/Unfollow confirmation page emails users get if they click on a footer's Follow/Unfollow Topic link.
-Click on Yes and when done, close the tab and you'll be back at the same place in the group you were before.

The reason we want to do this in a new browser tab is, unless if your current tab is a throwaway or you just don't care returning where you were, on completion of Method-1 you are taken back to the All Groups-All Topics main list page, and on completion of Method-2 back to the All Groups-Followed Topics main list page, since that's where you can currently do the (un)following stuff.  So if you don't want lose the place you were in the group's topic/message list, do it in a new tab.

Cheers,
Christos
