Typing tom seems to bring up all those with a t anywhere and ending .com Typing gom, jom etc seems to bring up all those with a go, jo etc anywhere and ending .com I haven't checked the whole alphabet

While that will work for Display names, it doesn't include email addresses. Unless/until Mark has a chance to figure out what's going on, try including the search term in quotes - "tom". It also seems

No, it doesn't split if a tag is added. Even if you explicitly use the "split" function on the web to add a tag, it doesn't split. It stays the same thread/topic.
