I tested this earlier this evening, and found that a Display Name changed from the Account page (as opposed to from within a specific group) is recorded in the Activity log of the group in question. C

Does seem like a bug, then. Because it’s definitely changing in the group. I’m starting to remember the past conversation about this and the request for the exception. But looks like it’s not working
