moderated identify "request received" emails for bugs #suggestion

I just received a "request received" email for a bug report I'd sent to support. There was no identifying information in it - no quote of the bug report and no identifying title. I wanted to add further info by responding to the email (as I'd been able to do in the past), but it was impossible to know whether the further info would be connected with the correct bug.

I think the "request received" email should either quote the bug report, as it used to, and/or at minimum, include the bug as titled in the original bug report.

Hmm, I am unable to reproduce this. Has anyone else seen this? J, which screen were you on when you replied (ie viewing a Topic, Expanded Messages, Single Message)?

Thanks,

Mark,

This seems like a new bug. I just tried to reply to your message that the display-name bug was fixed (it is), but the reply box hung on me and I had to exit out. Tried several times.

I will send you the details about the logging bug offlist.

That should now be fixed.

I don't know whether the bug where activity log entries show someone not in the group acting as a moderator is related to this or not. The log entries are still there (I would not expect them to be wiped out even if the bug had been fixed) and this may be a separate bug.

I haven't touched the activity log, so that's a separate issue. If you (or your friend) can send me the details off-list, I'll investigate.

In terms of pages I've re-written, I've only done the User Account, Message, Messages, Topic, Topics and Hashtags pages so far. In theory you should not see any differences, except where I've inadvertently introduced bugs. And also the Hashtags page has a new toggleable List view (it's viewable on production right now, but if I see any bugs, I'll take it down until next week. So if you don't see the new list view, that'd be why).

Thanks,

I don’t know whether or not this is related, but a group I’m a mod in (not the owner of) shows an entry “X changed Y’s email address from” . But (a) X is not a member of the group and (b) there’s no “changed it to” - just “from.” The same entry appears in Y’s member activity log. I’ve notified the group owner, who may be reporting it as a bug. But maybe something is awry this morning.

Thanks for the bug report. I am (slowly) redoing all the webpages using a different technology, cleaning up some technical debt, and I've started testing some of those changes on the live site (specifically on one of the 3 webservers in production). The bad links should be fixed now.

Thanks,
Mark

Good point. As it turns out that the downloaded zip file (I fetched
one, to see what it looked like) contains a json file for each folder
and image containing the original datestamp and description fields.

Example:
{"Created":"2016-01-12T20:14:10-08:00","Name":"Edge.jpg", \
"Desc":"This View shows how the Wood is tapered for Better Fit"}

It's not hard to imagine an import process that honored that json file.

Obviously that would be optimal.

And actually, as much as I'd love a bulk resize, I think a per-file
button on the edit box might be better: we have photos in our
Photos section that are scans of antique newspapers and manuals. Those
should probably remain big, and should have gone to the Files section
in the first place. But I'd hate to lose their detail in a bulk operation.

I'm another one with the same problem of needing to resize some photos. If it makes any difference, I have three premium groups that have the problem in, but only on random images. I didn't resize on transfer because I don't want all images resampled. There are a few, however that are not worth the space they take up now.

As has been suggested, it's possible to resample them manually and replace the original and reassign ownership, but that's a lot of fooling around for something that should be more simple. I would really like to see a function where an owner or moderator with such rights can select an image and have the system resample them down without changing the ownership or other information.

I might be something that could be added to the extra abilities of Premium groups. A group that needed to do this one time might be able to go Premium for a month to do this. Personally, I prefer to keep a few groups Premium to help support groups.io.

A related thing I would like is to be able to move an attachment to another folder without losing the connection to the original message, so the attachment didn't cycle out. I wouldn't worry so much about later appearances in a group, and am only concerned with the first appearance in a thread.

Another possible solution to this problem occurred to me.

As I understand it, I have the ability to export all Photos and end up with a big zip file. Assuming (and this is a big assumption) that the folders and folder names are preserved in that zip file, then it could be possible to:
• Export to zip file
• Do an offline batch resize of the photos
• Create a fresh zip file
• Pay groups.io a one-time fee to wipe out the current photos
and replace them with the contents of the zipfile

Ownership of the files would likely be lost (I assume the zip file wouldn't contain that information), but it could be probably be restored by group admins on an as-needed basis.

If any change is to be requested, IMHO it ought to be resizing in situ.

I hope this feature never goes away. And, yes, I also want this to apply to owner messages as well.

This is normal (but perplexing) behavior for database tables. See https://groups.io/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/understanding-groups-io-accounts/setting-account-preferences-and-viewing-account-information

If it's happening with something else that would be a bug.

I wrote about this a couple of times in the past few years, and never saw anything about why it's not being done. I think it's great that when someone tries to send a message it is automatically rejected if it has no subject line. I would love it if that feature would be applied to the messages sent to the owner address. I get those often and find it very annoying.

Have a good weekend,
