I'm sure Mark will figure out a solution.

I just wanted to suggest not separating the message view drop down from "hashtags" as they are deeply intertwined concepts/views. It really would feel quite strange for hashtags to be anywhere but where it is.

I can reproduce the problem with Firefox and IE at normal (100%) scaling.

In the Messages View when the browser window size is 1005 or fewer pixels wide the Date sort, page number, and page < > buttons pop down onto another row - and also the Msg# box disappears altogether. When the browser window is wider all those elements appear in the same row.

locked Message # / permalink icon display

Mark,

From #10184, but that thread drifted off-topic:
Ok, I linkified the message number. I'm undecided on it. What I don't
like is that, because the link icon is oversized, the underlining when
you hover over the message number is not a straight line. I tried
reducing the size of the link icon but that looks weird in its own way.
https://groups.io/g/beta/message/10184

I don't know if some further tweaking has happened, but in the message Single View and Expanded View (on Firefox) it looks just fine: the underscore appears as an unbroken line under both. Looks good.

Mark,

Do other people use the Msg # text field on a regular basis? I'm just
wondering if there's another way we can solve this besides having that
text field on the page.
The way Brenda and Sue (and Maria, IIRC) describe using the Message # search to find message content is really more of a way to scroll to a position within the Messages list. Sometimes using successive approximation to zero in on the message, when they can remember approximately when, or in the context of what other messages, the content that they're looking for may be found.

So I would say this isn't really "Search" in the same sense as the regular content search. In effect it is more like being able to "skip" the page < and > (forward and back) controls by more than one page at a time, or by a fractional page at a time.

I've mentioned before the idea of a filter tool for lists (that would include search results as well as Messages, Threads, and Expanded). The filter would restrict the list to items meeting the filter condition. In this case the needed filter is on message #, but date is another obvious one (as desired by Jennifer in #8967 and my reply in #9030).
https://groups.io/g/beta/message/8967
https://groups.io/g/beta/message/9030

On desktop I'd put a filter icon next to the search icon (magnifying glass). But instead of opening a pop-up, I'd have it expand a filter pane between the header and the list of messages. In that pane could be boxes for setting either number or date as the bound. Typing into one of those boxes would change the list below to start at that number or date. The pane would stay open, allowing easy editing of the target, at least until the user navigates away from the list or uses the filter icon to close it (and disengage the bound).

On mobile I'm not sure if there's room for a pane like that. There it may have to hide or something at each use to preserve more room for the list - but there must still be an obvious visual indication that a bound is in effect, and a way to disengage it.

locked To Mark -- resizing the Message Number Box on Desktop

Edited

Mark,

John said to tell you that it may not be an issue of it being bigger or smaller, it just isn't appearing until I'm at 80% view. I'm not sure how that ratio works, being bad at math. It doesn't appear at 90% or 100%, just 80% zoomed out.

But he said that there is plenty of space for it to appear, even at my resolution. The only other solution I can think of, besides trying to figure out that ratio, is maybe if you put Hashtags all the way to the right, then I'll see the Message# box but not the Hashtags Box, which I don't use. Unless that messes it up for other people on Desktop and the Hashtag box disappears for them.

EDIT: If you have a computer you can change to 800 by 600 resolution for a brief test view, you might be able to reproduce it, and might be better able to fix it.

Hope that helps and thanks for your patience and efforts.

Thank you so much,

Brenda

Mark,

Another thing is it was always between where the Hashtag button is and the magnifying glass. That might help as well, if you put it back there.

I appreciate your efforts more than you know.

Not yet, but please keep trying? Before, it was a little shorter than the Hashtag box is now.

I so appreciate this.

I haven't been totally following this, but it looks like the link icon and the linkified message # are now redundant? I am probably missing something. I don't mind the unmatching underlines, but I mind that there are two underlines for the same thing.

Yes, closed and locked are the same thing. Should the wording be changed to locked? There's not really a good closed icon. The closest I could find is an X, representing close.

I appreciate that, and John just explained to me that Higher Resolution = smaller font and Lower Resolution = Larger Font I tend to mix up which is which.

My browser window fills the screen, which is a 17 inch monitor, Cathode Ray Tube. I use 800 by 600 resolution on it, because anything higher gets entirely too small for me to read. At that resolution, in the current state, the box is gone for me unless I zoom out twice.

At the size the box was before, it was perfect. Since it is no longer an issue, the box having been removed from mobile screens, I just want Mark to please make it the previous size where I can see it again.

I never could see the Search Box due to my resolution just the magnifying glass, but I didn't care, when I wanted to search, I opened it with a click and did. So I was fine with how it had been before.

Thanks Maria, sorry I'm so upset.

Oh that could be cool.

Yeah - I wouldn't get rid of the permalink. Especially as I just learned how useful it is thanks to Duane.

Thank you for clarifying that. Merge CAN mean to put two things together, such as Mark initially merged the search box and the Message Number box and now he has unmerged them (whew). I just have to see the numbers in the list.

Still working on calming down...sorry.

Maria,

I was thinking the message # in blue+icon, since the permalink link icon has already been where it is for a very long time and users are well trained to use it.  Since it's whole purpose is to give you the link to a specific message, using its message number, the number itself and the permalink are essentially the same thing.

I could absolutely deal with doing away with the permalink icon entirely, but I think that's ill-advised since users are already familiar with it and its purpose.  Since the message number in its current position is new, new, new the option exists for tweaking its appearance.
