Slight amendment: I just discovered that on my iPhone, the text in the email does appear indented; it's only in email in safari on my laptop that the symbols appear instead (no indentation). Second, even in a group for which HTML has been disabled, you can indent text - any text, not just text selected before hitting "reply" - by using the '>' symbols.

p.s by "HTML has been disabled" I mean the "Plain Text Only" setting has been checked.

locked No indentation of quoted material in plain text #suggestion

Hello,

My group has been successfully transferred. Thank you so much! I figured out how add in-line responses to points in the original posts. I noticed that indentation was done using 'blockquote' in HTML alternatives. A minor point is that the indentation is shown with horizontal bars in some clients (e.g., Thunderbird). That's OK. However, the plain text alternative has no indentation at all, nor does it have the traditional '>' symbol in lieu of indentation. That makes replies hard to read for people reading messages in plain text.

My suggestion is to add indentation in the plain text alternative that is at least similar to that of the HTML alternative. Using '>' might not work, since it would be hard to distinguish levels of replies from the deliberate use of 'blockquote' for indentation.

I don't know yet how this works in digests, but the suggestion may apply there as well.

Thanks,

David.

Jeff,

You replied in-line in addition to top posting, so it will include the entire post, quoted parts and all. This message, on the other hand, should not include any quoted part.

Right. We strip out quoted replies in digests if it looks like the person replying top posted. We do this to make digests easier to read, because people don't have to scroll past endless reams of quoted text.

Understood. And it would probably have worked perfectly but for that bug about being unable to break out of a quoted section when replying from the UI.

What this comes down to is that we need to fix the issue where you can't 'break out' of a quoted section when replying on the Groups.io website. I have just pushed such a fix to the website. I'm still looking at one issue with it, but for replying to most emails, it should work now.

And with this reply I am testing exactly that fix, and at least in this case it is working as it should, which is great. Thank you for the fix!

locked Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • BUGFIX: Fixed horizontal scrolling when viewing on mobile.
  • BUGFIX: When replying to a message on the website, in the HTML editor, you should now be able to 'break out' of any blockquotes by hitting enter.
  • BUGFIX: Changed timezones in generated ics files to be UTC instead of the user's local timezone to hopefully fix an Outlook bug.
  • BUGFIX: Removing all tags from a thread would not remove the tags from messages other than the first in the thread.
  • CHANGE: Improved wording of subscription options, changed form layouts from horizontal to vertical to be more consistent.
  • CHANGE: Processing FBL requests from bellsouth.net
  • CHANGE: When looking for a user record when logging in or when sending a login link email, we now look for the email address in the aliases table. Some people who had set up email aliases didn't remember which email address they used to originally register with, and would inevitably try the wrong email address.
  • NEW: Dropdown to easily add tags when editing a pending message, composing a new message, or editing an existing topic.
  • NEW: Added Polls view.
  • BUGFIX: When adding/changing an event, we were always checking the current day of the week for no reason. Also, you could not uncheck an already checked day of the week when changing an existing repeating event.
  • CHANGE: Hashtag searches default to collapsed threads.
  • BUGFIX: Be smarter when cleaning subject lines; don't remove 'Re:' unless it's at the beginning
  • BUGFIX: Database column sorting was broken.
  • NEW: In the add/edit wiki pages, added a new Link To Wiki Page button.
  • CHANGE: For deleted subgroups, don't reserve the group name.
  • NEW: Reply to Group and Sender

Have a good weekend everybody!

Mark

The correct way to do it is to keep the ">" in EACH line of the quote
and separate your replies from quotes with completely blank lines
above and below each your reply. As I do here. Instead of using color.
http://email.about.com/cs/netiquettetips/qt/et090402.htm

The problem is that in neither case is what I actually typed by way of reply
visible in the digest email.
The ">" at the beginning of a line is a quote sign. Quoted text must contain ">"
in each line. What you write must not contain ">" at the beginning of each line.
Your messages were indeed very difficult to read in plain text digests.
I even didn't bother for most part.

But, when a reply like this happens and you get the digest version of the message, you see something like this in your inbox:

That is a screen capture of a portion of a recent beta digest email, displayed by gmail on my computer.

The problem is that in neither case is what I actually typed by way of reply visible in the digest email.  In the first reply it picked up what I typed ahead of the quoted thread, but in the second case it appears I managed not to even do that, so my reply doesn't show up at all, and it looks like I sent an empty message to the group.  (I checked... I did not. I quoted the thread, deleted most of it, and added my comment after what I left, where it made sense in context.)

This all seems wrong. Something about the way the code is trying to pick up only new text (or something similar) isn't working properly.

Any ideas? Any fixes possible? Or is this considered a UIB error?  (That's User Is-a Bozo, for those who don't know the term. :)  Perhaps the issue is the one Mark and I touched on, about the inability to get "out" of a quoted message/thread when editing it?

I know that our group has a fair number of digest format users, and this may become an issue for them once we migrate over next week.
