Sarah,

What a great find. I tried "som" and it found all that have an "s" anywhere in the email and end in "om". It did not pick up on a name with s in it.

Then I tried "pam" to find "Paige" and ending in "m" but that did not find anything. "pa" was not in the email address.

The I tried including the quotes literally ("tom") and that did not find anything where as without the quotes found numerous ones.

Not sure what the search rules are. Someone mentioned a wild card character of *

Typing tom seems to bring up all those with a t anywhere and ending .com
 
Typing gom, jom etc seems to bring up all those with a go, jo etc anywhere and ending .com

I haven't checked the whole alphabet though.

It also seems to be related to the length of the search string.  While tom and toms have problems, david seems to work fine, but 5 letter searches don't unless they have a space on both ends.

Without quotes, it appears to be looking for the characters in the sequence given in the search.  Looking for tom also finds all of the hoTmail.cOM addresses, but there are others that don't fit that mold.  Maybe it's those characters in any order?

Thanks Duane, I obviously overlooked that detail.

Hmmm, but maybe there is another way to achieve that intent. Maybe with an “Unsubscribe” – although worded differently – choice. Open, dead ends, and incomplete exchanges are frustrating to me. I’ve always been one for two-way exchange – even if it’s to say ‘I’m not interested.’ And/but getting people to demonstrate even that much ‘consideration’ can be difficult so should be made simple. Maybe put in a “GET LOST!” link that they could invoke to both vent their frustration at being approached and let you they’re not interested at the same time.

It seems to me that could cause other complications.  The Confirmation of Email Address is sent by the system, so any replies wouldn't be seen by any group.  As it works, that would be seen as confirmation since they replied as noted further up the message, "If you only want to send and receive messages, reply to this email to confirm your email address and activate your membership."

Try Tom*.

I do quite a lot of searches in one of my groups for TV model numbers.
I always have to add a * wildcard at the end as quite often extra
characters are at the end, eg 21AX2100EZ may only show if you use
21AX2100*

IMHO, if you’re going to change anything in this – I’ve already done some workaround on it – I would include this minor change:

I HATE sending something out and not knowing whether it: went into the SPAM box, or; into the ‘Junk’ file, or; was ignored, or; dropped below the active horizon, or; they are not interested but didn’t let me know, or; went into a cyber hole. If I’m ‘soliciting’ members – in my case I’m trying to locate some retirees that have been ‘off the radar’ for years in some cases – I’d like to know whether they even are alive anymore and/or just don’t want to be bothered.

It looks a bit messy IMO; the way the text is currently formatted, especially with the single bullet where it is, could be argued that it can potentially imply to a non-savvy/knowledgeable person that email messages would be sent to them only if they wanted"If you only want to send and receive email messages".

Plus from a hierarchy POV, the email addy is the parent and the two options the children; the current visual implies no parent and just two slightly-dissonant siblings vying for attention.

I would suggest to slightly reformat by moving the email address up "one step" so it's on its own as the top of the hierarchy.  Optionally (since the website option is a superset of the email-only option) also slightly enhance the website option:

Alternatively, don't use the bullets, un-indent the two options and move to the left and use "- " text bullets instead.

I believe the proposed changes can give the message a less-ambiguous/more-precise and cleaner visual+meaning flow to the average user who (bothers to) read it.  The totally-totally-basic user will still visually "see" the same first option as before and still as easily do it as they would have done as before, so we are not messing with them at all; but even for them or for the more savvy-ish users who do bother/want to read the rest of the text and options, we are being a lot more explicit/helpful as to what it does.

I have just done the same in 2 groups; one of 1977 members and another of 43. The first produced 740 returns and the second 17.

What is perhaps even weirder is that these represent 37.4% and 39.5% of the respective memberships, which, while not the same, are remarkably similar.

Without any more to go on but the apparent ‘consistency’ of both of your comments – I wonder if there’s something in the membership group or subgroup name that’s being found. I know that if I enter certain search params into my search I can spool up some, most or all of the members based on something deeper than just the surface ‘name.’

Trying this on my systems. I seem to have the bug (times of of events coming up as PST in Feed, although my profile  and calendar are set to UTC) on all of them - using Linux or Windows, Firefox or Edge.

But, looking (1) Feed does not (unlike 'My Calendar') have a Timezone setting dropdown (is this relevent?)
(2) looking at  https://groups.io/js/displaytime-0.2.6.js (as in post #27035) there is a "function DisplayFeedTime" (with "momentDay = moment.tz(t, tzstr);" ) and a "function DisplayEventTime" (with "momentDay = moment(t).tz(tzstr);"  - methinks they ought to be the same, even if I can't say which is correct.

If the display name is set to non-member as a default, I would like there to be some way to change that, and I’m nog sure a way exists because there’s no member page. Some of our members don’t know how to use aliases and accidentally send messages from a non-member address, but it’s still them.

No, it doesn't split if a tag is added. Even if you explicitly use the "split" function on the web to add a tag, it doesn't split. It stays the same thread/topic.
