Quite; I eventually worked out that those were the real subject of both this and the corresponding GMF thread; it is far from clear there as well.

To clarify:

Simple switch(es) to turn off imposed (so called 'System') Hashtags.

Of course, any group should be able to require whatever hashtags they desire to be used in their group(s).

Groups.io worked without Hashtags.

This should be an Opt-In 'feature',
or at least have an Opt-Out option(s) that don't require Workarounds and continuing extra work (Moderation).

Anyone who wants to use Hashtags should, but why force others?

Who, exactly, is "forced" to use hashtags?
Groups.io automatically adds hashtags to Calendar notices.
There is no controls to prevent that, only Hashtag Moderation workarounds...

OK, "imposed" would have been better verbiage to describe this.

Duane,

So I´ll try to do that this work around.

Hope it works.

Have a look at the topic https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/71935945 for a way to prevent the hashtags from being included/added.  Michael (OP) has developed this work around, but it takes extra time to moderate/change the messages, so that's why he's asking to be able to turn off hashtags completely.

Ah... what you are concerned about are System Hashtags, or at least a sub - set of them.

Not quite the same as "hashtags" in general.

Chris, you worte:

Indeed so, and for perfectly proper reasons, but it doesn't force any other group to use the things. IMHO it is perfectly straightforward to prevent the use of hashtags now without asking Mark to provide a kill switch.

What really bothers me about the unwanted hashtags, is the fact that they show up and establish themselves on the start page with each calender event. I have asked about this in GMF, but there was no solution suggested.

Everyone - for example in this group . See „new group Charter“.

But there are good reasons for this. I think this setting should remain a decision of the group owner.

My groups use: Messages/Topics archive, Calendar, Photos, and Files.
We do not use: Hashtags, Polls, Chats, Databases, Wiki, Subgroups, or Integrations (RSS).

Our only 'use' for Hashtags is in Calendar in order to Moderate and remove them,
ALONG with unwanted prefixes e.g. "Upcoming Event: " and repetitive Date and Time elements
(which should also be able to be turned off)

We don't send out a Guidelines yet, but would also Moderate the Hashtags off.
I would move them from Message footers, but Guidelines functions similarly to Calendar.

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • INTERNAL: Work on a new help center.
  • BUGFIX: If an event had '<<' in the name, the group event notice would not be generated correctly.
  • BUGFIX: Export user wasn't generating ICS files correctly.
  • API: Added email_address field to group object.
  • BUGFIX: There was a bug with event RSVPs which could prevent some people from RSVPing to an event.
  • BUGFIX: Removed duplicate Member Sync buttons from various settings pages. This had been renamed to Service Sync and placed elsewhere.
  • API: Fixed sort for /getmembernotices endpoint.
  • CHANGE: Separate the settings in the Default Sub Settings page into two panels for greater clarity.
  • CHANGE: For moderator only hashtags, including Special hashtags, we now allow their use if they've been added to an approved pending message sent from a non-moderator. This means they were added by the approving moderator before the message was approved.

Have a good weekend everyone.

This is a different situation.  Premium groups can already Direct Add members, while Basic groups can't.  This would be a modification/continuation of that feature on paid groups.

Removed for spam has to be handled by the person that's removed, whether it's an accident on their part or their email provider's error.

I doubt if this one will fly; there is no immediate means of knowing where and by whom the message was marked as spam. I have a suspicion that implementing your suggestion would cause more problems in the long run than it does now.

moderated Markdown paragraph interrupted by list doesn't render as list #bug

Christopher Warrington

The Markdown message editor says that it's using GitHub flavored Markdown.
(Current version at [1].) I'm not sure if it's using an older version, has
some missing features, or has a bug here.

The following GFM paragraph [2] [3] should be a paragraph followed by a
list.

Foo
- bar
- baz

When I put that into the message editor and click preview, I get a message
that has all three lines run together with the dashes in the middle. Sort
of like this:

Foo - bar - baz

I've not explicitly tested the Wiki editor.

moderated Markdown lines that end with a \ are not hard wrapped #bug

(Current version at [1].) I'm not sure if it's using an older version, has

The following Markdown paragraph should be rendered across at least three
lines, as I'm using a backslash to indicate a hard line break [2].

This is the first line.\
And here is the second.\
Now the third.

When I put that into the message editor and click preview, I get a message
that has all three lines run together with the slashes in the middle. Sort

The two spaces variant of a hard line break renders across three lines as I
expected.

It appears that repeating characters are getting collapsed/ignored. Search on harrrrrr and you'll get the same results.
OK. That sort covers one aspect and I can see that searching for harrrrr gives me the same results as harr. Collapsing/ignoring repeated characters may explain why when searching for harr I get the name Richard in the results.  It does not explain the results when I search for jone which has no repeating characters.  In this case, I see numerous members with the surname Jones but also several that do not contain those consecutive letters in either name nor email address.

Until I come up with a better solution, you can surround your query with quotes and that will provide an exact match only (ie. "jone").

Thanks,

It would be handy if the Past members display that currently exists for Premium groups had a "reinstate" function of some kind...effectively Direct Adding that account back to the group.

Thanks for your consideration.
