Re: FBL turned on for aol.com members

I don’t have any better advice on AOL but the information is that AOL is a problem for all the lists I’ve moderated (a lot) and it is on the AOL side. They do odd things with list messages. I think to reduce the load on their server receiving so many copies of the same message. One list I was on — not a Yahoo or Google group — the subscribers had to go to an AOL site to read the messages. They refused to distribute them.

Re: Gaps in message numbering
Lena, This is caused by how we (currently) do message threading. When we get a message, we look at the References header. For message ids in the references header that do not match messages we already have, we create placeholder messages in the database, in anticipation of receiving those messages at some point (we're assuming messages have been delivered out of order). Each placeholder message takes a message number. We also do this so that we're better able to match messages to specific threads. So my guess is that one of the messages you approved had a lot of references, which, in the test group, did not match any existing messages, which caused the creation of a bunch of placeholder messages. I've been contemplating getting rid of placeholder messages. I'm not sure how much they benefit us when threading messages, especially since I added code that matches subject lines last year. But I have not had a chance to look at it more in depth. Thanks, Mark

Re: FBL turned on for aol.com members
Mark, I don't know what the upshot is here, and what we should do in general regarding our AOL members. I just sent you an email this morning (I also cc'd Shal, since we'd been discussing this in GMF and it was getting complicated) showing that messages between my group's +owner address and a pending AOL member, *in both directions*, were not getting through. Since this incident (and similar ones) I have started to advise my group members not to use an AOL address for Groups.io groups. Do you have any better advice? I don't really understand what you've implemented and how it will affect AOL members at this point. I also have a couple of AOL members who still have not taken the advice and who are showing intermittent email delivery failures... Thanks. Messages are the sole opinion of the author. Sorry--I forgot to paste in the information: Hi Janice,
I do receive the full Digest. When I hover over a Topic I see a path address which will change with each message. I have Verizon Fios but did have Time Warner which acted the same. I normally use Microsoft Edge or Microsoft Internet Explorer with Windows 10 on a PC, not a Iphone. I have also tried Google Chrome and Firefox with no change.
Thanks,
Tom

FBL turned on for aol.com members
All, FBL stands for feedback loop, a system that some large email providers (mainly aol, yahoo and msn, but not Google) have set up so that we can receive reports when their members mark emails as spam. The assumption is that we will unsubscribe these people. The way we deal with these reports is the same as when someone clicks an unsubscribe link in a message footer. We unsubscribe them, and send a notice to them with a resubscribe link that's valid for 3 days. I turned the system completely off last year because I was receiving reports from people who were being unsubscribed but claimed that they weren't marking emails as spam. I have no direct interactions with people involved in email at AOL/Yahoo/MSN, but I fear that us not acting on these reports may be the cause of delivery issues with these companies. It appears that AOL is partially blocking us right now, for example, even though they list us as having a good reputation. I looked at the logs for FBL reports from AOL users. Over the past day, for one AOL user, we received 166 FBL reports. So I've turned FBL processing back on for AOL users. And at some point I'll turn it on for the others. Please let me know if you hear from members who have been unsubscribed this way who claim they have not marked any messages as spam. One question to ask them is to look in their spam folders to see if any messages from us are in there inadvertently. Also, I'm open to suggestions for ways to improve this system. Thanks, Mark

Thirded, and deja-vu: As for bouncing, I'd love an email notification, as well. Currently, I think there are just activity log entries (general and the member). https://groups.io/g/beta/message/7401?p=,,,20,1,0,0

Gaps in message numbering
My group is fully moderated. Today at some point of time
there were 3 pending messages. I approved them via email. They got numbers 77513, 77514, 77516. On my test group the first message got number 1, the second number 13. It's not a problem, just something strange.

second this, but in my case, I'd really love the option to receive it as an in interface web notification so my email client is not flooded with bounce notices. Thank you Maria

And maybe also (again) if they transition from Bouncing to Bounced. I wouldn't choose this on all my groups, but I try to shepherd my PTA group subscribers more than usual, as they paid for the privilege of joining the PTA, and having also signed up for the list subscription I feel I owe them (and the PTA) the extra effort. This came up in a question on GMF@ about handling bouncing members, so I thank Anita there for giving me the round tuit to write this. Please consider this also bump for the long-awaited notification overhaul, since I'm sure some moderators who work primarily through the web interface would like to have a convenient notification too. Yes, I know I can learn of recently bounced subscribers via the Activity Log, but having to periodically make the rounds of checking things like that is a real drag, and more so the more groups one manages. log owner messages to members
#suggestion
I'm having deja-vu that I might have suggested this in the past: I sent an owner message this morning and I don't see it logged anywhere. I did bcc myself and received the bcc so I know I sent it. However, I think there should be record of this in the logs, and I don't see one anywhere. I could be missing it, but if not, it would be helpful if this could be added, as a permanent record. (The "owner messages" in the member's page shows "no messages," but as I understand it, this record is only for messages FROM the member to the owners. If owner messages to the member are supposed to be logged there, then I will report a bug.) Thanks. Messages are the sole opinion of the author. Re: Change presentation for Subgroups

100 percent agree. Why have a sub group link to click if you dont have any?
I dont find the admin drop down cumbersome, only two clicks to get where you want to go, one more than before, and one doesnt have to search thru all the headings to find admin stuff

Re: Separate Admin Menu options from member menu options

I notice that below "Admin," the word "Integrations" sticks out to the left. It always makes me think it defines the boundary of the Admin items. Could it be shifted right so that it lines up with the rest?
