Does this setting mean it would be handled as a Special Notice, sent to everyone that isn't on No Email? If so, I hope it's only available to owner/moderator when creating a hashtag. If not, I guess I'm confused...

Thanks,

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this short week:

  • BUGFIX: We were not properly accounting for space removed when deleting files. The bug's fixed. I need to go back and reset file storage byte counts, which will happen next week.
  • NEW: Thread actions available when viewing Message View/Expanded Message View/Single Message View.
  • BUGFIX: Couldn't change the name of an enterprise subgroup.
  • BUGFIX: Allow margin-left css tag; it's what our editor uses to indent.
  • NEW: Hashtags can now be set to indicate special messages.
  • NEW: If you have a password set, you can now delete it completely if you'd like.
  • CHANGE: Updated some verbiage on the logged out home page and features page to reflect new features.
  • NEW: Can moderate threads and can set threads to be automatically moderated after a certain number of days.
  • NEW: For enterprise groups, you can set up group aliases, which redirect to your group (for misspellings, prevent sound-alike squatters, etc).
  • BUGFIX: Fixed an issue where when a moderated message is approved via email, the number of moderated messages isn't decremented.

I will be busy the rest of the week with Thanksgiving things, although of course always monitoring the site. If you're celebrating Thanksgiving, I hope you have a good one. If not, I hope you have a good rest of the week.

Hi Shal,

You know I like consistency! There's now a dropdown menu in the Messages View. There are also additional options in the More menus in the Expanded Messages and Single Message views.

Failing that, there ought to be a way to get from the Single View of a message, to that same message in Topic View.

There already is, at least when the thread has more than one message. If viewing a single message in a thread with multiple messages, at the bottom is the "View All N Messages In Topic".

Thanks,
Mark

moderated Re: Ability to automatically moderate topics #suggestion

Hi All,

I just pushed the ability to moderate individual threads, and to set up your groups to automatically moderate threads after a set number of days. In addition, I've changed beta@ so that instead of locking threads after 14 days, we moderate threads after 14 days.

Please let me know if you see any strangeness or have suggestions.

Thanks,
Mark

fyi, this week is full of travel and family stuff for me, so response times may be a bit delayed.

(if we had the status field in profiles, I could put this there, but I haven't added that yet)

Sounds like a bug. Can you send an email to support@groups.io and detail to the best of your memory, your actions with the files section?

moderated Add "All Posts By This Member" function to Member Directory #suggestion

Mark,

I think the "All Posts By This Member" function would be an appropriate thing to find in a group's Member Directory.

I'd like it to be there for any member who has posted to the group, but I'm not sure how to reconcile that with the fact that the directory currently shows the set of members who've made their profile available.

In most groups that's likely a different set than the set of those who've posted, but maybe the two sets can be unioned and the Directory display adjusted to show the Posts link, the Profile link, or both as appropriate to each member of the union.

locked Re: ability for moderators to see attempted messages to locked topic #suggestion

Brian,

Whether it's moderated initially or that's turned on I believe that
e-mail participants should receive a message back either for every
submission letting them know that all content on this thread is
reviewed before going live ...
This would be consistent with the current locked topic behavior, sort-of (it would be a message back after the member's message was accepted, rather than a rejection of the member's message during the server hand-off).

I'd want it to be done only for moderated topics though, not for moderation due to the group setting nor due to the member's individual override. That is, the moderated topic is an exceptional circumstance so it merits a notification.

... or, and this is much more complicated programming wise, that sort
of message sent the first time any given member attempts to add to a
thread that's currently moderated ...
I think the rest of this is getting into the realm of the "technological rococo", I don't feel strongly about it either way.

But then I'm somewhat a "hybrid" user. Though I read and compose primarily by email, if the topic is long I'll often go to the site to read ahead in the topic view, which in Groups.io is sometimes easier than reading ahead in my email.

That find should, of course, have been "fine."

BTW, is editing one's own post disabled in Beta?  This was an instance where I was going to typo fix but "Edit" doesn't come up in the "More" menu.

Shal,

The icons showed up find on my computer.  While I love the balance scale visually I prefer the gavel meaning wise.  Moderation on a thread may be nothing at all about balance, particularly if someone is giving factually incorrect information in a context where that very much matters.  I am quite sure that moderators who are caught moderating those sorts of threads are not looking for balance when the meaning is taken as "both sides" [factually wrong and factually correct] get equal time.

I also like the connotation of the gavel as being associated with a judge, which is a huge part of the role of moderator when it comes right down to it when a moderator is actually needed.

Göran,

I miss this option to be able to import members by csv and also to be
able to import messages as sql database
Those features don't exist. Due to the probability they would be abused, I don't think they are likely to be made available on a general basis.

The nearest thing is the Easy Group Transfer, which only works for importing from existing groups on other platforms:
https://groups.io/static/transfer

You can also contact support@groups.io with a specific import request.

J,

OTOH there are some social complications. Do you mark a topic as
'moderated'?
I think that would be a good idea. More in the other thread: #12051

J,
(asked in other thread, #12028)

> OTOH there are some social complications. Do you mark a topic as

I think that would be a good idea. A question Mark will have is "what icon?". Looking at Font Awesome I can see a few cadidates:

 Envelope-open
 Shield
 Hands-stop-o
 Gavel
 Exclamation-triangle
 Eye
 Balance-scale

(those icons aren't likely to show up correctly in email, sorry I don't know how to do that)

Conceptually I like the balance scale, but it is a bit large and intricate - visually it may not work as well. The open envelope is simpler and could represent the idea that messages will be "opened for inspection" before posting. The gavel of course represents passing judgement, so that might be suitable.
