moderated Follow-Topic emailer logic/code is missing hashtag(s) under some certain condition #bug

Hi Mark,

Here's another FollowingOnly weirdness I noticed a couple of days ago, and it probably has to do with the same logic/code area you worked on to fix this similar FO messages missing group tag issue a while back: https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/69924762

See attached, the "Samuel's Paid User Proposal" topic, some of the replies are missing the #suggestion hashtag.  I obviously cannot test this on the actual topic without actually posting something, but it almost looks like it initially takes only one poster to reply and somehow cause the hashtag to not be applied, then anyone replying to that "bad" message continues the missing hashtag trend, until some point in time when someone will reply to a "good" message and it now restores the normal hashtag inclusion on that post's replies, but then it takes another poster to reply to a "bad" message and the cycle repeats.  Most likely the replies that are causing this are by email only but I'm not sure.

I guess it happens only to Follow users, but I don't know for sure; someone from us who is a beta member with individual but not FO setting and uses email, and may have either saved locally the "Samuel's Paid User Proposal" topic, or they see their name in the list under one of the missing hashtag messages and check their sent folder to see what went out in their reply, it should have the hashtag.  Or maybe look into their deleted but recoverable email folder if their client/email system has that.

I only caught this because that thread was so big the condition came to visual view at once when I looked at the email folder where it was downloaded into; it went (visually) undetected during the normal daily FO mailings trickle, it's not limited to the catch-up part of the FO mailer, it also happens during regular everyday FO mailings of that topic's messages.  I went back to my recoverable deleted items folder* and looked at the original messages of that same topic sent to me as part of the normal daily FO/follow-topic mailing for that topic, and the originals matched the same (as attached) missing-hashtag results I got when I unfollowed and refollowed that topic and got everything catch-up-emailed to me again.

Cheers,
Christos

It does looks like it's looking for *T*O*M*, (not *TOM*), in that order, but anywhere in the text (addy+domain), and only for email addresses:  I tried it on a 5-member test group, and it only returned one: amdTemp...@...OM, the only one who fits the pattern.  I then added the text tom to a different member's profile name and while it (correctly this time) picked that one up as well, changing it to toam or taom did not catch it now.  So it only does it in the email address field, and since .com is omnipresent, it only takes just one more letter-matching to return that many "matches".

While I had not encountered this situation yet, I’ll agree with Christos on this one. ‘Nit-picking grammar’ has been a forte of mine for some time.

Hi Mark,

This is just the (nit-picky) grammarian in me, but this dialog question text could stand to be rearranged:

Changing it to "Set [this/these] x group[s] to No Email?" would make it more grammatically correct, plus move the delivery method (the only important part of the question really) at the end where it doesn't get "camouflaged" within the text but "stands-out" more, since we read left to right; casing the delivery method would also contribute to (visual) consistency across the platform.

Cheers,
Christos

Jeremy,

The lack of displaying the information is a new bug. We should probably keep this topic focused on the search issue only.

Why don't you start a new topic for the failure to display the search information. Very interesting but it makes for confusion in a defect reporting and bug fixing. We can all help narrow it down in the new topic.

Hi Mark,

When editing a calendar event, using the Back button at the bottom of the page causes a blank calendar screen due to a malformed calstart parameter in the URL. The current format is calstart=dd.mm.yyyy whereas it should be calstart=yyyy-mm-dd.

FYI I emailed support@groups.io about this back in March 2019 (ticket 8299) so I thought it worth another nudge :-)

A quick test on one of my groups found lots on searching for tom (t anywhere, including only after the @ (e.g. in hotmail.com), with ~om at end, or matching *o*omot*@*.*o.* (changing all other characters to single *); but only a few for jom , only finding adresses starting jo~ and ending .com (but not starting  jp~, or starting jo~ with m  in a different place). Curious.

Searching for som and pom (in same group) only found four (each) - with ~so~ or ~po~ in address, and ending ~om. At first glance, a seemingly random selection...

Another curiosity: if on subsequent screenfulls (i.e. not first) of my search for tom (found >100), I change search argument to jom, and press enter (to search), it say is giving me 1 to 7 of 7 (that it normally does for that search), but does not display any of them, until  I click a column header to sort them.

Sarah,

What a great find. I tried "som" and it found all that have an "s" anywhere in the email and end in "om". It did not pick up on a name with s in it.

Then I tried "pam" to find "Paige" and ending in "m" but that did not find anything. "pa" was not in the email address.

The I tried including the quotes literally ("tom") and that did not find anything where as without the quotes found numerous ones.

Not sure what the search rules are. Someone mentioned a wild card character of *

Typing tom seems to bring up all those with a t anywhere and ending .com

Typing gom, jom etc seems to bring up all those with a go, jo etc anywhere and ending .com

I haven't checked the whole alphabet though.

While that will work for Display names, it doesn't include email addresses.  Unless/until Mark has a chance to figure out what's going on, try including the search term in quotes - "tom".

It also seems to be related to the length of the search string.  While tom and toms have problems, david seems to work fine, but 5 letter searches don't unless they have a space on both ends.

Without quotes, it appears to be looking for the characters in the sequence given in the search.  Looking for tom also finds all of the hoTmail.cOM addresses, but there are others that don't fit that mold.  Maybe it's those characters in any order?

Thanks Duane, I obviously overlooked that detail.

Hmmm, but maybe there is another way to achieve that intent. Maybe with an “Unsubscribe” – although worded differently – choice. Open, dead ends, and incomplete exchanges are frustrating to me. I’ve always been one for two-way exchange – even if it’s to say ‘I’m not interested.’ And/but getting people to demonstrate even that much ‘consideration’ can be difficult so should be made simple. Maybe put in a “GET LOST!” link that they could invoke to both vent their frustration at being approached and let you they’re not interested at the same time.

It seems to me that could cause other complications.  The Confirmation of Email Address is sent by the system, so any replies wouldn't be seen by any group.  As it works, that would be seen as confirmation since they replied as noted further up the message, "If you only want to send and receive messages, reply to this email to confirm your email address and activate your membership."

Try Tom*.

I do quite a lot of searches in one of my groups for TV model numbers.
I always have to add a * wildcard at the end as quite often extra
characters are at the end, eg 21AX2100EZ may only show if you use
21AX2100*

IMHO, if you’re going to change anything in this – I’ve already done some workaround on it – I would include this minor change:

“If you are not interested, or if [Invitee Email Address] is not your email address, please ignore this email.” Change to: “If you are not interested, or if [Invitee Email Address] is not your email address, please ignore this email reply to let us know so we can remove your address from our data.” – (“…or list.”)

I HATE sending something out and not knowing whether it: went into the SPAM box, or; into the ‘Junk’ file, or; was ignored, or; dropped below the active horizon, or; they are not interested but didn’t let me know, or; went into a cyber hole. If I’m ‘soliciting’ members – in my case I’m trying to locate some retirees that have been ‘off the radar’ for years in some cases – I’d like to know whether they even are alive anymore and/or just don’t want to be bothered.

Hi Mark et al,

I suggest a simple and quick tweak.

The current text for the account confirmation message is as such:

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in Groups.io. If you did not request or do not want to join Groups.io, please ignore this message.

If you only want to send and receive messages, reply to this email to confirm your email address and activate your membership.

·  Messages will be sent to you at 12345@...

If you want to use the resources and read messages on the website, please click on the link below to confirm your email address, set up a password, and choose other subscription settings:

<Confirm account>

Cheers,
The Groups.io Team

It looks a bit messy IMO; the way the text is currently formatted, especially with the single bullet where it is, could be argued that it can potentially imply to a non-savvy/knowledgeable person that email messages would be sent to them only if they wanted"If you only want to send and receive email messages".

Plus from a hierarchy POV, the email addy is the parent and the two options the children; the current visual implies no parent and just two slightly-dissonant siblings vying for attention.

I would suggest to slightly reformat by moving the email address up "one step" so it's on its own as the top of the hierarchy.  Optionally (since the website option is a superset of the email-only option) also slightly enhance the website option:

Modify

If you want to use the resources and read messages on the website, please click on the link below to confirm your email address, set up a password, and choose other subscription settings:

to something like this:

If you want to also be able to use the group [online/website] resources and be able to also read and reply to messages on the website, please click on the link below to confirm your email address (and activate your membership), plus set up a website password, and choose other group subscription or [website/account] settings:  (bolding here is only for clarification of proposed changes)

It now becomes:

Hello,

Thank you for your interest  ...............................

Messages will be sent to you at 12345@...  (bolded for HTML, not sure if we are sending out these notices as text-only)

·  If you only want to send and receive messages, reply to this email to confirm your email address and activate your membership.

·  If you want to also be able to use the group [online/website] resources and be able to also read and reply to messages on the website, please click on the link below to confirm your email address (and activate your membership), plus set up a website password, and choose other group subscription or website settings: <Confirm account>  (maybe bolded for emphasis)

Cheers,
The Groups.io Team

Alternatively, don't use the bullets, un-indent the two options and move to the left and use "- " text bullets instead.

I believe the proposed changes can give the message a less-ambiguous/more-precise and cleaner visual+meaning flow to the average user who (bothers to) read it.  The totally-totally-basic user will still visually "see" the same first option as before and still as easily do it as they would have done as before, so we are not messing with them at all; but even for them or for the more savvy-ish users who do bother/want to read the rest of the text and options, we are being a lot more explicit/helpful as to what it does.

Cheers,
Christos

I have just done the same in 2 groups; one of 1977 members and another of 43. The first produced 740 returns and the second 17.

What is perhaps even weirder is that these represent 37.4% and 39.5% of the respective memberships, which, while not the same, are remarkably similar.

Without any more to go on but the apparent ‘consistency’ of both of your comments – I wonder if there’s something in the membership group or subgroup name that’s being found. I know that if I enter certain search params into my search I can spool up some, most or all of the members based on something deeper than just the surface ‘name.’
