Agree with this, too. As I mentioned, the only reason I wanted to remove the "Like" was that it contained a link to my profile. Thankfully, the link is a bad one. But there is certainly a better way to achieve that.

Brian,

I agree that messages and other content should remain in the archives after a member leaves a group, of course. But I don't think their profile should be accessible to the members. And indeed, it is not. The problem is that currently, that inaccessibility, which I feel sure was intentional on Mark's part, includes or is achieved in a buggy way ('page not found').

It is my feeling that the online archive serves as "the historical record" and just because one chooses to leave a group does not and should not result in one's actions while a member of said group being erased upon one's departure.  One's messages do not disappear from the archive if one leaves a group (and I know of no way to force that to happen and would protest it were it to be asked for) and I see no reason for one's "Like" actions to do so, either.

It could be argued either way about access to one's public profile, but I think that should be maintained, too.  What one elects to do online "in public" at the moment of its being done should be expected to remain public in perpetuity.

I recently left a group in which I had "Liked" one of the posts. The group has public archives. I went into them, after leaving the group, with the hope of undoing the "Like" because I didn't want my profile accessible from the group. Two things happened:

(1) When logged in as the user who had "Liked" the post, I could see "you liked this" but was unable to undo it.

(2) When logged in as a different user, I could see "1 person Liked this" and could click on my (other) user name, However, the click took me to an error message. I could click on "1 person" which successfully took me to a picture of my (other) user profile, but clicking on that link led to "404 page not found."

On the one hand, I was gratified to see that members of the group I'd left no longer had access to my profile, making (1) (the ability to Unlike the post after I'd already left the group) unnecessary. On the other hand, (2) allows people in the group to see my user name and profile picture (which shouldn't happen in the first place), and then leads to a "not found" bug when they click on it.

Hi All,

Just an update on the easy group transfer issue. It certainly seems like I'm running up against some sort of rate limit for accepting invites for the transfer groups.io account. I seem to be able to accept about 17 invites and then it starts erroring out. I've tried using a VPN to see if it's just tied to my IP address, but it's apparently tied to the account. The limit appears to be in effect for more than 24 hours. I currently have a backlog of 15 invites waiting to be accepted.

I'll be putting a notice on the easy group transfer page explaining that there may be a delay in accepting invites.

Cheers, Mark

Password reset doesnt work when 2 fctor authentication is set, so does anyone have any idea as to how I regain access to my group please?

When you set up 2 factor authentication, we generate a set of 10 one time passwords for you to use in case you lose your authenticator, like in the scenario you described. Did you write down those passwords, as directed? If so, use one as your password and you'll be all set.

If you did not do that, then send an email to support at groups.io, from the email address that is locked out, and we'll figure out some way to authenticate you.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Spam/bogus join requests

The linuxham group is one that as received as many as 30 bogus subscription requests a day.  This is a group dedicated to amateur radio and I simply reject or ban any request that does not identify the amateur call sign.  The membership never sees these requests, but they do add to the work load of volunteer list moderators.  I would be in favor of subscription confirmations.  Make sure that the confirmation is not one that is easily spoofed by a robot.

I would also suggest that a single IP address subscribing to several groups in a time window be automatically flagged and banned.

Thanks for the really great group forum Mark.

While we are on the calendar subject..we are in the process of moving from the other place(yahoogroups)and I've been asked by several members if there was a way or could a function be added to calendars like an event tab or button that would parse the calendar and give a list of events for the month in list form?

thanks

Thanks for your responses Maria.

I am in my Groups page, however, I do belong to several groups. I picked one group where I am also a member of several sub-groups, but the only events I see are the events I added on my main group. My sub-group events do not show up.

Yes there is. If you go to your "Your Groups" page you will see "calendar" on the left navigation bar. That will have all the events from all the groups/subgroups you are subscribed to.

2. When RSVPing, can we have an option to bring a guest(s) to an event?

Good idea, but I'd love controls on this: ie: make allowing guests an option mods/admins can enable or disable, and in addition if enabled, make it an option for events, as not all events can allow guests. I'm not sure what a +1 would look like in terms of the RSVP visual though. I'd think the +1 info would need to be collected in a database that requests name, email and other info of the guest you are bringing and ads a +1 to the member's RSVP box and to the total attendee count.

Mark,

This is great. Greedy as usual, though, I have one request: is there any way to change things so that the attachments can be easily deleted from old messages? Normally (at least in our group, and other groups where topics are automatically locked after a certain period of time), old topics are locked. So to delete any attachments requires first unlocking the topic and then editing each message. It would be awesome, in fact, if moderators could just use this "attachments page" to delete the attachments directly from it, thus eliminating several cumbersome steps. I'd love to view the attachments, and then, topic by topic, delete all attachments from ones I select.

As a moderator, If I delete the message will the attachment/s also be deleted?

Yes, if you delete a message, the associated attachments are automatically deleted. If you delete a topic, all the attachments associated with the messages in that topic will be deleted.

Also, after thinking about it yesterday, I've moved the new Attachments page. To access it now, go to the Billing or Upgrade link in the sidebar in the Admin dropdown. It's not a useful page for anyone other than group owners, so having it as one of the archive views didn't make sense to me.

Thanks,
Mark

Hello everyone! I have a few questions/suggestions for the calendar.

1. Is there a way for everyone to see their entire calendar including events in all their sub-groups? It is difficult to keep track when there is more than one sub-group also adding events.

2. When RSVPing, can we have an option to bring a guest(s) to an event?

3. When I create a recurring event and check Send Invite to Group, does it send every single instance of that recurring event? Is there a way to just send an Invite to the Group for just the most current or just that specific instance of the recurring event?

4. Here is something else that I had issues with:

  1. I added a recurring event for the year.
  2. I made changes to some months where I knew we would not be holding that event.
  3. I went in to update the description for the entire event.
  4. When I got done, all the events I deleted were back again and all the location changes I made were gone too.

5. Event Locations: can this be a dropdown so we can select from previous locations or add new locations?

Thanks so much!
