moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • BUGFIX: Display lock/gavel for locked/moderated messages in the expanded message view.
  • BUGFIX: Hashtags that are set as special are now forced to be moderator only.
  • BUGFIX: Upgraded version of TinyMCE to fix a Firefox autolink problem.
  • CHANGE: Reorganized the Settings page with help from J and Shal.
  • NEW: New annual premium plan ($99/year).
  • INTERNAL: Initial work on upgrading the search engine software and hiring of a consulting firm to help.
  • NEW: Added 'Ynt:' as a signifier that a message is a reply (like Re:).
  • UPDATE: Revamped Definitions and Hashtags sections of the Help page with J's new text.
  • INTERNAL: Added another rel=nofollow to prevent some search engine duplicate crawling.
  • CHANGE: The /manage URL is now /settings, to reflect the name of the page.
  • CHANGE: Researched a case where Gmail decided a specific Groups.io /mt URL was a phishing URL and would display warnings when viewing any email with that link in it. To combat this, I changed all Groups.io mute/unmute/follow/unfollow links within emails to be unique to the individual receiving the message.
  • BUGFIX: Fixed optimistic locking issue with the bouncer program.
  • INTERNAL: Completed and rolled out changes to how we use sql savepoints in the database.
  • CHANGE: All instances of the Summernote editor have been replaced by the TinyMCE editor, except editing wiki pages.
  • CHANGE: Changed the display of poll results on mobile to be more clear.
  • CHANGE: Rolled back the price increase on premium plans. Once again, it's $10/month.
  • CHANGE: For 'Message to Member' group notices, don't have the option to set one as active, as that doesn't make sense.

Have a good weekend everybody.

Mark,

Still nada on hover-over with mouse using NVDA or JAWS on the gavel icon.  Dead silence.

It is also important that whatever technique you use for this will result in a verbalization if someone is traversing the page using a screen reader elements list, which would not show the icon, but should "know about its presence" even though it's not shown in an elements list.

Mark,

Since I know you take accessibility seriously there is a problem with those icons.  When testing with NVDA it's as if they do not exist whether I'm hovering over with a mouse or in a list of links going down through what's on the page.

Good catch. Should be fixed now. (The fix is to add <span class="sr-only">description to be read out</span>).

Thanks,
Mark

Not quite sure if they need alt-text or what might fix this, but if it's alt-text it would be better that it describe the purpose of the icon, e.g., "moderated", than the icon itself, e.g., "gavel."

Now, I twist on your closing:    Thanks, Mark.

I feel so much better that my "dumb as a box o' rocks" may be accurately applied going forward (at least for the sighted, I have no idea how those icons read for a screen reader user, time to try that out).

moderated Updates to Trello

beta@groups.io Integration <beta@...>

[Beta] New card "Automated, customizable "topic closed" and "topic moderated" notices" was added to list "Messages and Archives".

[Beta] The blue label "Messages & Archives" was added to the card "Automated, customizable "topic closed" and "topic moderated" notices".

[Beta] The description of card "Automated, customizable "topic closed" and "topic moderated" notices" was changed to:

See: https://groups.io/g/beta/topic/5074283

Could there be a customizable message for the lock and moderate topic situations that moderators can click on to include as the last post in a thread before it goes on moderation or is locked? I suppose it would require a new message category in "member notices," possibly "topic notice"? Then when you click on "moderate topic" or "lock topic," a dropdown would come up. Or something. Not sure whether this is more trouble than it's worth, but it would be very convenient for our group.

[Beta] New card ""All Moderator" group setting" was added to list "Features".

[Beta] The lime label "Features" was added to the card ""All Moderator" group setting".

[Beta] The description of card ""All Moderator" group setting" was changed to:

See: https://groups.io/g/beta/message/13811

Could there be a group type, on the opposite end of the more restrictive types in terms of permissions, where everyone who joins is automatically made a moderator? One of my groups is like that in terms of policy, but since it's not automatic I have to go in by hand and set every new member to "moderator." One of the reasons is so that everyone can invite others. Another is a sort of increased level of equality of membership that's desirable in this particular group.

Now, however, I think we have a design deficiency, as this appears to be the case only when one is using Topics view (which I use exclusively except for testing).  When I go to messages view, and am looking at messages in the topics, "New HTML Footer" and "Site Updates," both of which are moderated and clearly indicated as such in topics view, I see that no such icon is assigned to the individual messages.

Locks and gavels are now displayed in all message views (they were missing from Messages and Expanded Messages).

Mark,

On this message the issue appears to be gone.  I will continue watching and let you know if it occurs again.  If you would prefer that issues like this be identified via the support e-mail address please also let me know.  I just elected to do it here because the thread was "hot" at this time.

I just upgraded the version of TinyMCE to fix another bug. I haven't been able to reproduce your bug. Can you see if the new version fixes it?

moderated Premium plan pricing rollback and yearly billing

Hi All,

Based on the feedback I received after I increased the price of the premium plan a few weeks ago, it became clear that that was the wrong thing to do (while Mark likes to believe he's perfect, the evidence surprisingly suggests that's not always the case). So I have rolled back the premium plan price to what it was before, $10/month. Groups that signed up at $30/month have been credited with two free months.

In addition, I have added a yearly billing option, for $99/year. If you are currently on the monthly plan and wish to change to yearly billing (or vice versa), it's easy to do; just go to the Billing tab under the Admin menu and there will be a button to switch.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Mark

J,

I don't think groups.io addresses have been figleafed in quite a long time - I think that exception was made maybe as early as the implementation of figleafing itself.

moderated groups.io addresses no longer figleafed, others figleafed - is this due to new editor?

I noticed this morning that groups.io email addresses (xyz@groups.io) are no longer figleafed on the web. I jumped to the conclusion that email addresses in general are no longer figleafed and I was about to celebrate, but after testing I found that others are still figleafed. Just wondering what's going on...???

Mark,

I am now encountering an issue that I had not encountered before:  the inability to "backspace out" a block of selected text if and only if that selected text runs to the last character of the compose window.   For example, my signature.  If I select everything up through the 'S' in the word, "Search," and hit backspace it will delete that chunk.  The moment I span on to that last line hitting backspace will not remove anything.

I have had this occur on groups where I have no signature and had been chalking it up to a quirk, but I'm now able to consistently replicate this behavior whether or not a signature is involved.

Well, I'm on board for this feature.

I also believe it should be able to be applied to anyone.  Group owners and moderators already have mechanisms at their disposal to make their voices unquestionably heard (special notice being one) when speaking on matters that require it.  When they are speaking about anything else they are simply group members, nothing more.

[I pulled this out of a thread so people can find it more easily]

Yes, in some types of groups it would be nice to have an option to filter out messages from specific users.

It should be a group setting whether it's there or not

It obviously should not apply to "special notices"

I'm not sure whether it should be possible to block moderators/owners.

moderated Re: New HTML footer

Picking up on this thread, I can add a URL into the footer, which becomes a clickable link upon sending, but I am interested in being able to have a small logo/image-file (png or jpeg file). Doesn't have to be clickable or linked. Can this be done?

Thanks,

Nick

[Beta] New card "Edit button on sticky wiki display" was added to list "Messages and Archives".

[Beta] The blue label "Messages & Archives" was added to the card "Edit button on sticky wiki display".

[Beta] The description of card "Edit button on sticky wiki display" was changed to:

From Shal:

One inconvenient aspect of the Sticky Wiki feature is that when it comes time to update its content you have to go find the page in your Wiki's list of pages. Then come back to Messages to check the resulting appearance.

Perhaps moderators (those who can modify group settings) and owners should always see an Edit link or button near the Sticky Wiki display (and an empty box when the page is empty). Saving or Discarding the edit would return you to the page (Topics or Messages) where you started.

This would also make the Sticky Wiki feature fully usable even when the main Wiki is disabled (it already displays despite that setting).
