It seems that the advanced email preferences are not well featured in the Subscription page.

I think being able to subscribe to just the first message in a thread and then follow any of interest is a very powerful and appealing concept. In fact, I have changed that to the default preference for one group I own.

Right now this option is BELOW signature on the subscription page and is additionally hidden, only visible when the user clicks on Advanced Preferences. I suggest at the very least it is promoted to the space above signature. 

And I think that somehow it needs to be featured, either by a better label or layout.

A suggestion for the section on signatures in the useful Help page.

It says:
How Do I Set Up A Signature For My Account?
To set a signature for your account, go to the Subscription page for your group (it's the 'Subscription' tab in the left hand sidebar when viewing your group). On the subscription page, look for the 'Use Signature For Web Posting' checkbox and check that. Then you will be able to add a signature. Once complete, click the Save button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

I suggest that you change “account” in “to set a signature for your account” to “to set a signature for a group”.

And add that each group you subscribe to (or each subscription) can have a different signature. Or “the signature is for a specific subscribed group and you can set a different signature for each, if you wish."

It works, just tested that.

I noticed in doing a Groups search, there's no Sort options, to re-sort your search results.  Would be nice to be able to sort by best match/relevancy, newest, oldest, # of members, # of messages.

Clicking the Forgot your Password link has the end result in putting you in the Profile page because the idea is that you want to reset your password.

Yes, there is a slight inconsistency here. The link in the "This is a digest for ..." sentence does go to the /messages page. This would require a log in if the group had private archives. But the link doesn't say Group Home. I can change this to go to the group home page if people think that'd be better.

I reluctantly click "Like" on Duane's workarounds because they are good workarounds. But I would still prefer to have direct editing capability of the signature a priori.

I can think of a couple of work-arounds that you might consider, at least for now.  First, you could require approval on messages to give you a chance to correct things before they get posted.  Maybe only for members that seem to have trouble?  Alternately, you could edit the posts after they show up.

Hi All,
It would save our group and it's horses so much pain and trouble if our moderators could edit the members signatures.  
We have been trying to email directions (we don't allow images or attachments in the messages) and that works for most members however there often is formatting issues as well as the challenges of explaining things to members who don't have a basic understanding of computers or how Groups.io works. 
Is it possible to be able to give moderators the ability to edit the members signatures?

It seems most helpful that any Group Home link would lead directly to the xxxGroup Home Page (without having to select xxxGroup from any list or drop down menu.)  Second choice would be to lead to the Manage My Subscriptions page with a group list that is already displayed (without having to click on a drop down menu.)  I think having the Log In page leading to the Profile Page is most confusing, as it so closely resembles the Log In page itself, and the xxxGroup Home Page must be accessed by the My Groups drop down menu.

And I'd be happy if new subscribers could simply pass that information to owners in an email to the group's +subscribe email address. Currently comments included in emails to the +subscribe address simply vanish without warning.

Requiring potential subscribers to fill out a web form or send a separate email to the +owner email address, or waiting to receive and respond to a Pending Subscription email, etc., is needless complication.

I agree, the plain space box which Yahoogroups offers is the way to do
this. Having the person wishing to join to fill in a detailed web
questionnaire or respond by email to a 'pending' email just slows
things down. If they can say 'Fred, G4XYZ, member' in that box at the
time they join we can approve it immediately.

I´ve seen you are the owner of a catgroup with amedical issue. I run the German speaking canine and feline Cushings Yg. We exist since 2006 and every week we get new members with quite sick animals. We likewise do not want to have spammers and food vendors or other commercially interested folks, and we need to have a good and friendly atmosphere for the pet owners who are often quite worried (I´m sure you know what I´m talking about).

 

Yahoo used to send out an automatic questionaire which we could text to our own gusto until 2014, but since then this possibility has vanished. So I made up my own qu. and it is well accepted by prospective members. I always add a pdf with group guidelines which they must accept as well. The questionnaire even asks for name, telephone numer and address and for a little text about the animal in question. So we know exactly who that person is.

 

Since about 2010 facebook with its easy going communication is on the market with thousands of groups, but our prospective members obviously prefer a professional serious minded group to facebook, and they do not bicker about the complicated entrance methods.

 

I was on facebook from 2010 to 2014, and I really got fed up with it, for I like serious and sustainable communication.

 

So I am really hoping our genius Mark will find some time eventually to find a possibility to provide this sort of indiviually filled questionnaire and hopefully also do that language job (which I believe isn´t easy). That’s what I want to contribute to this question.

 

Thanks for all your thoughts and work. I´d be so glad to move to groups.io since we have absolute treasures in our files and hope Yahoo will hold for a little while longer so they won´t get lost.

"Dear Prospective Member,
Thank you for your interest in the <GroupName> group.
Groups such as <GroupName> occasionally suffer from individuals who join groups to harvest email addresses and "spam" the membership. So before your application is approved, would you please tell us a little more about your involvement with <GroupSubject>? Just a few lines will do, such as where you live, your name, your aspirations regarding <GroupSubject>or the names of any <GroupName> members you might know. If your email address is cryptic, please provide your proper name, not a pseudonym or business name - anonymous applicants will not be approved.
We're sorry for the extra step, but we trust you'll understand that we simply have our members' interests at heart.
Please send your reply to <GroupName>+owner@groups.io
If you do not reply then you are clearly not very interested in our group and your application is likely to be rejected.

If I get no reply within a day or two, I reject the applicant.

I use the owners email as the email to have the person respond to, so as to not dangle a personal email out there. Our message asks them to provide their name, why they would like to join, and that they have 72 hours to reply to the note otherwise their request will be declined.
Get a reply, then bring them in. Don't get a reply - POOF.
