Yes, they're different, but this is still just semantics. The display name should also be what the user wants.

Confusion Alert!! This topic is about Display Names; User Names are something else entirely and the two must not be confused with each other.

Agreed. User name should be what the individual wishes and we as
moderators should have no say over the matter. In our amateur radio
lists we encourage members to set their user name to callsign and first
name but it entirely optional. We should not be setting rules for it.

Same thing here on my old Windows XP machine using the Chrome browser. They show up okay using Firefox.

As for the "new topic" message editor, I'm still not getting a file attachment upload button. I've tried XP using Chrome and Firefox, and Windows 10 using Chrome and Edge. Same story on all of them.

I'm happy with that. When they sign up they get asked first name, last name , display name, email address

Then they can modify email and display name.

I just want owners and moderators to have the ability to see first and last name and if needed the ability to change them

For this to happen
Two new database fields to be added
Update signup form to include these fields
Modify members list under admins to display the information fields,
Grant create/modify and view only access role and allow owner to grant or deny this to moderators.

A display name or an eMail address should only be able to be changed upon request of a member, either by approval or by the owner/moderator .

Solved for my purposes.
I subscribed to calendar, made it public, added it to my Google calendar, and posted a link on my group home page in my group description.

It could just be me, but I'm still missing around half the icons. Here in Beta I'm seeing ~ next to Home, and blank boxes next to other sidebar items. I have icons for Messages, New Topic, Directory, Calendar, Files and Wiki.

I don't have a problem with this as such - I only ever use Desktop so have all the relevant words to work from - but thought it might be worth raising.

Thanks,
Carol

Unfortunately, wildcards don't work. For example,
https://beta.groups.io/g/main/search?q=lymp*
finds nothing though
https://beta.groups.io/g/main/search?q=lymphom
finds several messages.

The photo download did download with a click at one time, but didn't work with several browsers, so was reverted to its current function.

Bruce,

Right clicking the Download button gives me the "save link as" option in my Chrome browser. I don't really see a problem.

We've had similar complaints about the CSV files for the member list and databases, but this strikes me as a more pernicious problem inasmuch as our subscribers have to deal with it, too.

There is a large "notification overhaul" planned and photos will be included in that.

moderated customize "new file uploaded"

I'm  not sure whether this is already in the planned notification overhaul, but FWIW: In the cases where I upload a file that I want to announce to the group, the result of clicking "notify members" is very generic. I almost always have to add a subsequent message explaining what the file is and, if it's an update to an already existing file, what the change was. In most cases this does not really get members' attention because the title of the file is not contained in the message title.

It would be helpful if the notification included (a) the name of the file in the message title itself (not just in a line within the notification body) and (b) a customizable announcement, separate from the "file description", about the addition and its significance.

Some of my ex YahooGroup but now Groups.io members are missing the Yahoo-style updates that used to come out saying what files and photos had been uploaded in the recent past.

Yahoo and Groups.io could send an email out when a file had been uploaded if the uploader had ticked the box to notify members, but uploaded photos never got mentioned. Only in Updates could this activity be seen.

Is it possible to have a similar feature introduced to Groups.io please?

Margaret P

 Margaret,

There is this option when uploading files. Like Yahoo, there is also place to enter a short description that also goes along with the notification. I don't know why it was chosen to not do this for photos.

Doing a search on "photo notify" found discussions here in the past, but I wasn't able to find anything specific as to how the determination was made.

For those who require a calendar handout for meetings, can we get a Print button on the calendar page?

At the moment, if you try to print the calendar, you get all the info on the event/id.
