It isn't just html files. The same behaviour occurs for all types of files in the Files section. It seems there is no way to view a file. A user can only download files. I've tried jpg images and txt text files and all that happens is that they download. The Edit icon doesn't actually edit any files, so it was no help for viewing a file. Perhaps the hover text on the icon should be "Properties" instead of "Edit".

On the other hand, the Upload procedure is much more user friendly and includes a nice mini-previewer for the text and image files I used to test the upload process.

I believe that would be a security issue. Someone could mock up a page that looked like a Groups.io page, asking for your email/password. Someone clicking on the file would think there was a glitch causing them to be logged out and requiring them to log in again. I could put a header around it, I suppose.

When composing a message there are toolbar buttons to add a photo and to add an attachment. Both of these options allow me to select a local file on my computer and upload it for use in my message.

This is good, but, what if I want to add an image or a file from the group's Photos or Files sections? I think this would be a great way to answer common questions.

Easy links to other group elements would be nice as well, for example, sub-groups, calendar items, databases, wiki pages, etc.

Maybe it could be a toolbar icon to "Add Internal Link", from there you would select the type of item you want to link to and you'd get a list of items.

What are your thoughts?

It's correct for Groups.io, just different from some other sorts. ;>)  In your example, it looks to me like it ignores spaces, which I actually prefer.  I believe it also ignores character case.

No, it does not alter the order other than reverse what is the unexpected|incorrect order to an equally unexpected|incorrect one.

Just above the  first file name is "Namew" followed by a up or down caret.
Click on the caret to change the sort  order to descenting or ascending and see if it resorts correctly

Thanks for the quick response, Mark. I may rapidly get out of my depth in answering your question.

I'm exploring how I might reconstruct a Wikispaces site on Groups.io and evaluate if it is a viable alternative. I can export Wikispaces pages to HTML or to a number of other formats such as WikiMedia, DokuWiki, etc. Image and other files linked by these pages are also exported. Discussions on these pages are separately exported to a JSON file for each page but that's for another discussion. The basic question is how to remount the pages and related files.

Here's a header from an exported HTML file:
  <head>
    <title>SQLite Tools for RootsMagic - Addresses - How Used</title>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="static/style.css" type="text/css" />
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" />
  </head>
Does that answer your question?

moderated Filename sort order is odd

I was surprised by the name sorting on the Files pages. It doesn't follow what I would expect to be the normal order.

For example:

In Windows, the list order is as it should be:
A Proposal...
An Example...
Ancestry Tree...
Ancestry.com...
Another version...

    1. The upload stopped when a non-image type was encountered. I don't think any file got uploaded from that set. Wrong. Image files up to that point were uploaded.
    2. Same issue as for Files re generation of thumbnails - a list would be faster.
  3. GIO did not allow for an additive selection dialog, e.g., select *.jpg first and then add *.png to the list. (nor could I find a way within the Windows File Manager - well, I did subsequently by using the Group by type feature)
  4. Not all the image files were uploaded - GIO reports 152; Windows reports 181 should have been selected. I have yet to look for the exceptions. That was the consequence of the first broken upload, I think. Having deleted the album, starting afresh, selecting all through the kind:picture filter found and successfully uploaded all 181.
As has been requested elsewhere, bulk operations such as Move, Delete, Rename are needed for Files and Photos.

Also, Sort and Filter by Type and Search/Filter on strings in name.

BTW, I couldn't edit my first post in this thread.

I reported some things I ran into with bulk upload to files in this message. Further to it, I have additional problems with bulk uploads to both Files and Photos.
Files
  1. Not all of the non-image file types were uploaded. A subset of all the PDFs did not. I have to dig some more to find what else did not.
Photos
  1. Windows file manager did not allow me to select only image type files from the mixed bag using a filter (I'm sure there is a way).

Two thoughts:
  1. On file upload dialog - display group setting on whether or not photos are allowed in Files section (popup/tooltip listing file types recognized as 'photos'?)
  2. Allow upload of zip file that is expanded on server into folders/files after upload  - previously suggested.

Re: Stopping posting of photos in the file section?

I just got caught by this filter on my first bulk upload to a new group and also by an erroneous message. I had not previously uploaded any file and I wanted to upload a bunch, 499.

  1. The "Upload File" button is singular, implying only 1 file at a time, reinforced by the singular form title. However, I was pleasantly surprised that bulk upload was possible.
  2. Having selected all 499, I was thrown off by the subsequent generation of thumbnails, the completion for which I had to wait until I could start the upload. It would be more efficient to simply list the files.
  3. My file set included image files. I don't recall seeing any warning or automatic rejection of image files in the dialog to this point. The image files were all rendered into thumbnails suggesting that they were accepted.
  4. The upload proceeded to apparent completion (progress hit 100%) but was followed by a screen with a picture of a cat saying the system was under maintenance, try later. This message proved erroneous.
  5. On clicking on Files in the sidebar, 318 files were reported, not the 499 that had been selected. I thought it said 319 initially and then dropped by 1 but that might be faulty vision. It took some searching to discover this topic and the answer that image files had been blocked. It almost seems that they were uploaded with the rest and then deleted.

I agree it would be handy to be able to integrate our Google calendar somehow...not for updating, just for display.

I tried to kludge it into our group by putting an iframe in our wiki. It showed in the edit view but got stripped out when I saved.

A topic came up recently that might be 'easily' resolved.  If a group uses the Google calendar (or any other) extensively, it would be nice to be able to get to it from the group menu.  My suggestion is to have a setting for the calendar feature to allow for the normal 'local' calendar to be used or to include a link to a 'remote' calendar that could be accessed from the Calendar selection on the left menu.

J,

Well, it´s not a language issue alone. I simply find it redundant. There´s a title to the description already. I believe readers are clever enough to know that the text following the title is a group descriptionJ.

I post this in beta because I thought it could maybe be changed to optional.

By the way, I don´t think I´m so special about this. There were quite a few voices in this direction. Pre-formulated texts such as boiler plates and non-alterable titles generally make one feel being patronized, so as if, sorry to say this, group owners were not able to create their own texts for various situationsJ.

Also, a non-German speaking person (like me), or a person who knows just a little German and is interested in your group, gets a better idea of how to read your home page with the titles than without them.
