modifying subgroup properties
charlesreid1.dib@...
Hi there, I see there is a "Create A Subgroup" API endpoint that allows you to set several settings of a subgroup. There is also an "Update Groups" endpoint that allows you to change settings of a Group. But there is no "Update Subgroups" endpoint. How can I modify properties of an existing subgroup? (Specifically, email_delivery settings, message_selection settings, max_attachment_size settings, etc.) The end goal is to be able to script the addition of subgroups, and separately, script the modification of subgroups at a later time (and, for example, have some presets like "public digest" or "private list" or etc.) Charles

calendar features
Charles Reid <charlesreid1.dib@...>
A couple of calendar features that would be nice to see: * A single page with all URLs for all subgroup calendars in one place (currently each group's mailing list URL is hidden behind a couple of clicks and can't be automated without building a web scraper) * A single calendar feed that aggregates all subgroup events, so that users can subscribe to all subgroup calendars by subscribing to a single calendar * Better Google Calendar integration (particularly since Google has a Google Calendar API); specifically, ability to import (all? some?) events from an existing Google Calendar to a Groups.io group/subgroup calendar

Subgroup settings for API don't match web interface
Charles Reid <charlesreid1.dib@...>
Hi, I have a couple of screenshots of web interfaces (attached) for various subgroup settings that I can set. However, these don't match up with the subgroup settings that can be specified when creating a subgroup using the /createsubgroup API endpoint. For example, in the web interface the first item is "Visibility" with one of the settings being "Group listed in parent group, messages viewable by parent group members." There is no visibility setting in the /createsubgroup API endpoint (https://groups.io/api#create_a_sub_group). There is only "privacy" and none of the settings match the specified "Messages viewable by parent group members" - there is only: sub_group_privacy_limited_archives , sub_group_privacy_archives , sub_group_privacy_unlisted , sub_group_privacy_none Likewise, there is no setting to control who can view the member directory, or who can view the members list.

Improvements to the Rejected Message UI and message
#suggestion
The moderator UI and member experience for rejected messages is a bit crude:
o The rejection composition box does not show the subject line o The rejection composition box does not show the rejected message o The rejection composition box cannot be moved out of the way o The rejection composition box has no formatting tools o The rejection text is stripped of formatting even though the email is sent as formatted (multipart/mixed) and the Member Notice edit box has formatting tools. If there's a reason to force a boilerplate surround you could model the UI on the Invite or Direct Add notices, but I don't see a compelling reason for the boilerplate. I'd prefer that both Subject line and message body be fully under the group owner/moderator's control. One thing the current mechanism does correctly is that it has a drop-list to select one of the stored notices (of type Rejected Message) so that the initial Subject and text can be chosen ad-hoc. I would not want that functionality to be lost. The designation of one of the Member Notices (of this type) as "Active" would then apply to rejection by email; and may be used as a default for the drop-list choice when rejecting by web. Either or both of these may already be true (I didn't test them). Shal

If you wish to remove something from the exclusions list, follow steps 1 thru 3, but then select an item in the exclusions list, then click Remove and respond Yes when UAC appears.
Temporarily Disabling Windows Defender 1. Open Windows Defender Security Center. 2. Navigate to the Virus & threat protection pane then activate the Virus & threat protection settings. 3. Locate the Real-time protection toggle (it’s currently the first item as of this writing) and throw it to OFF. 4. Respond Yes to the UAC prompt to allow changes. 5. If you wish to turn Windows Defender back on manually before it would come back on automatically, repeat the above but throw the toggle back to ON in step three. You will still receive a UAC prompt to allow that change to occur.
----------------------------- Neither looks nor "reads" the same without the formatting that distinguishes response items from instructions. If I wanted plain text I'd create in plain text. I don't and I don't and I also don't want to have to redo the work of setting up bold, italic, etc., all over again after a paste. Like I've said, I'm aware of virtually any workaround you can name, they just often involve compromises to the formatting that I just do not wish to make. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134 ~ H.L. An old trick is to copy and paste from complexly formatted documents into a text editor like notepad or Emacs, then recopy and paste from the text editor to strip out formatting.

I did some further checking. By inserting that one line without a number, it stopped the numbering and started over when the next paragraph was started. It looks to me like the correct thing to do would have been allow it to be numbered, go to the beginning of that line, hit backspace to remove the number, and it should have resumed on the following paragraph. At least that's what the manual says to do to get a temporary break.
One thing I've learned in my 4+ decades of computing is that you can't always believe what the software sellers tell you. I've been doing html for years in notepad, so it's easier to catch those little glitches that can pop up. It usually happens when you make an exception, such as you did here, to the expected flow. Without that inserted italic line, there would have been no problem. Duane

Well, tested elsewhere and am having the same issue. Afterward I changed just one thing, the line break to separate out the italic phrase regarding returning to step 2. Now, inexplicably, when I cut and paste now straight out of the .docx, what I get is 100% correct. So, while the cause of the original issue remains a mystery it's corrected now for future cut and pastes.

If you have never used the groups.io website, you will need to follow the instructions just below to get a password so that you can log in to the site. Otherwise jump straight on to the section, Advanced Preferences for Your Group Subscription, for the preferences that give you precise control over the messages you’ll receive from groups.io, and in what format, afterward review the section, Groups.io Message Reply and Other Options Sent In Individual Messages and Digests. Note: the easiest way to log out of the Groups.io web interface is simply to enter https://groups.io/logout in the address box of your browser and then navigate to that page. You don’t need to locate the link showing your name, activating it to get the drop down menu, then choosing log out from that menu.
Getting a Password to Log in to the Groups.io Website If you’ve subscribed via e-mail you have a Groups.io login id, your e-mail address, but you’ve never been assigned a password for the website. To get one: 1. In your web browser, go to the Groups.io main site login page: https://groups.io/login 2. Find the “Forgot your password?” link and activate it. 3. A page with a single edit box, e-mail address will open. Enter your e-mail address in it. 4. Navigate to the one and only button on the page, “Email Link to Log In,” and activate it. 5. Watch your e-mail, including your spam/junk box, for a message from Groups.io that will contain a link you need to activate that takes you to your Groups.io profile page where you set your password. This is the password you’ll use to log in to any Groups.io group webpage where you wish to do something, such as changing your preferences, that requires you to be logged in to do. You are, at this stage, actually logged in.
Advanced Preferences for Your Group Subscription Adapted for Screen Reader Users by Timothy Wynn
These preferences allow you to get very precise control over what messages you will receive in e-mail from groups.io and the format in which you’ll receive them. You can significantly decrease the amount of e-mail you receive from high-traffic groups while also being able to decide what's important enough to keep an eye on. Once you get to the main Groups.io webpage, https://groups.io, you will need to navigate to the "Log In" (two words) link and activate it. Once you've entered your username, which is the e-mail address you've used to subscribe to the group(s) you routinely read, and password, activate the "Log In" button and you will be taken to the "Your Subscriptions" page.
As you can see, if you choose a setup where you have elected to get messages with the "Following Only" option combined with the "First message also" checkbox this will greatly decrease the flow of e-mail you receive while allowing you to decide for each topic whether you wish to follow it to receive further messages or not. If you do nothing then you will not receive any additional messages for that particular topic unless you hit the link to follow it at the end of the message or reply to it, if the "auto follow replies" option was checked.
Groups.io Message Reply and Other Options Sent In Individual Messages and Digests At the end of each individual message is this collection of links: 1. View/Reply Online followed by the Groups.io message number assigned to that message. 2. Reply to Group (which you’ll probably never use since a straight e-mail Reply does the same thing) 3. Reply to Sender. This is how to send a private message to the person who sent the message you’re currently reading. Activating this link will fire up a new message in your e-mail client of choice, including web based ones if you have that set up, and will put the e-mail address of the digest snippet’s sender in the “To:” field and put “Private:” followed by the actual topic’s “Subject” line after it. 4. Mute this Topic. If you wish to stop receiving any further messages related to this topic, whether in the digest or as individual messages if you switch to that mode, activate this link. 5. New Topic (which you’ll probably never use because it throws you into the web interface for the group to compose a new message for a new topic. Most will do this just by e-mailing the group posting address. 6. A number of additional links related to the specific group, which can vary somewhat by group. 7. A fixed collection of links: a. Change Your Subscription – which will take you to the Groups.io page where you can change your basic subscription options or tweak the advanced options for message delivery that I’ve written about separately. b. Group Home – which will take you to the Groups.io home page for the group this message originated from. c. Contact group owner - uses the mailto command to cause a new, blank e-mail message to be created with the group owner address of the group already filled in. d. Terms of Service e. Unsubscribe from this Group – which throws you into the Groups.io web interface for unsubscribing from the group where this message originated. At the end of each digest message is a collection of links: 1. View/Reply Online followed by a count of messages in that topic already. 2. Reply to Group (which you’ll probably never use since a straight e-mail Reply does the same thing) 3. Reply to Sender. This is how to send a private message to the person who sent the message in question to the group. 5. Top ^, which shoots you back to the top of the e-mail message. 6. New Topic (which you’ll probably never use because it throws you into the web interface for the group to compose a new message for a new topic. Most will do this just by e-mailing the group posting address).

The behavior of the Groups.io compose is the same whether the source for the cut material is .docx, straight .htm., or filtered .html.
As far as I'm concerned it's just plain weird since all three show the same thing with a correctly numbered list with the visual break for the line, "You will have to start back at this step for each group for which you wish to set up the advanced mail preferences," between what should be item 2 followed by item 3, but is being rendered as item 2 followed by a new list, at the same indent level, starting with 1. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134

Re: Problem with paste from MS-Word into Compose Window for Groups.io
#bug
Brian Vogel <britechguy@...>
I can only report what my personal experience has been.
I cannot count the number of times I've done direct cut and paste operations for numbered or bulleted lists out of MS-Word and into the compose window of Groups.io (and BleepingComputer.com, too) without incident. This behavior I experienced today is, for me, the clear exception, thus the reason for my post. I doubt very much that I am alone in expecting a cut and paste of formatted text from a word processor into a web compose window to work, at least in general. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1803, Build 17134
