Please subscribe to the app subgroup, and when the app is ready, I'll post a link there.

Thanks,

moderated New group message and chat message notifications #update

Hi All,

As part of the work on the app, I've added two additional notifications, one for when messages are sent to the group and one for when messages are sent to a chat you're subscribed to. They are listed in your Subscription page, under Member Notifications. They are checked by default.

Since the app is not currently generally available yet, the only way you'd see these notifications is if you've got notifications enabled in your web browser (under Account -> Notifications). Which is a small percentage of the Groups.io population. That said, I will not turn on the sending of these notifications until Monday, March 29th, which will give people time to uncheck the boxes if they wish. Again, even if the boxes are checked, and it's after Monday, you'll never see a notification unless you've configured your browser to accept them.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Another nudge for Samuel's suggestions, especially number 2 - export the results.

This has arisen in a free group where a poster has edited their own message. I guess it would apply if a moderator did the edit but have not tested that scenario.

When the poster edits and then clicks Save and Send to Group

1. The message is sent out without regard to any hashtag muting, everyone receives it.
(I have not tested whether topic muting is also bypassed.)

2. The email threading is incorrect, the new message has a new Message-ID and no reference to the old one. For example ...
edit & send:
Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2021 00:11:58 -0700
Message-ID: <Groupsio.1.zEAl.1616569918707413211.qNFq@groups.io>
original:
Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2021 00:11:58 -0700
Message-ID: <zEAl.1616569918707413211.qNFq@groups.io>

moderated Re: How to fix out-of-bounds subscriptions #misc

Hi All,

I've changed all subscriptions that had an email delivery of `No Email` or `Special Notices Only` and `Message Selection` other than `All` so that `Message Selection` was set to `All`. That seemed to be the path of least surprise, in that it will lead to no change in email delivery behavior.

Thanks,
Mark

I just found out that there are two (or three?) more places where the new NoEmail & SpecialNotice assignment needs to also reset the FO settings, as they still allow you to "set" your subscription to either NoEmail or SpecialNotice while keeping the FO settings you had before.

A. If one has a group set to Indiv/digests/summary + FO(...), the "Your Groups" page (groups.io/groups) allows you to select one or more groups and set them to either NoEmail or SpecialNotice, and it will do so but it also keeps the previously-selected FO settings.

B. Same in the Unsubscribe page (from email message link, ../<groupname>/leave/.../.../.../xyzzy) or Sub settings page -> Leave group -> "Verify Leave" dialog, it gives you the option to "Switch to Special Notices", which also resets you to Special Notices but it also keeps the FO settings you had before.

These two cases have been fixed.

Thanks,

Yep, it works correctly! All apologies! My sense of time is all screwed up lately. I thought the posts in question had to be from last year. Turns out they were from *this* year. :-)

moderated Year is left out of the date after message search #bug

I just noticed that if I search on messages for some term, the display of the messages coming back, even if they are from a year prior to 2021, are lacking the year in the date. They just say, e.g., "Jan 15" even if the date was Jan 15, 2020.

I was thinking more of miscreant members using the feed for nefarious purposes.  I had that happen on a Yahoo group, even without an RSS feed.  I just don't want to make it any easier for them.

If the RSS feeds are retrieved over HTTPS then there's no more security risk than any member's password being compromised. Not adequately vetting a new member is more of a risk.

Many thanks for the quick fix!

I also asked Feedly why it wasn't working and they responded with this:
https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Frealstmfc.groups.io%2Fg%2Fmain%2Frss

You might want to fix the remaining issues, if they're also easy to fix.

I wonder if it's because this group has been setup with its own domain with the group called "main"?

I just stripped all the HTML out of the feed description, and it's working for me in Feedly now (although I don't know why HTML in the description would matter at all).
