moderated Hide Locked topics #suggestion

WB5JJJ - George <wb5jjj@...>

In a couple of groups I frequent, the admins have Locked and Pinned so many topics that it is becoming a bit overwhelming.

I use a larger text font (150%) than most folks and that eliminated the "menu" on the left side (OK), but it puts a very LARGE menu-type dialog at the bottom of the page in its place.  Typically, I have to scroll down a bunch to get past all the clutter at the top in order to get to a current topic.

It seems that some owners of these groups just lock and pin everything, and that causes problems.  Many of them were/are relevant, informative and of interest ONCE, but not every time I visit the page.  So, I would like to suggest that users be given the ability to HIDE any locked or pinned topic so I would not be occupying real estate that could be used for new topics.  Of course, one might want to unhide a topic, so some sort of mechanics to do this would also be necessary.

I think all this discussion about how people sign up for a group, is off-topic for this (Beta) group.

A problem that will probably stop immediately if you change your group to Restricted; spammers don't respond to Pending Subscription messages!

So far, it's a small price.  I'm sure others have a different opinion on that.
No price to pay for you, only those who find your group's messages being forwarded to them by the spammers suffer from it.

When deleting a subgroup, there's a red warning that the name can't be reused for some length of time.  This is correct for a main group, but doesn't apply to subgroup names, so isn't needed.

These have been fixed.

Why does everyone assume this miscreant is a he? That’s sexism! 😀

re: "Out of curiosity, why would you allow members that you can't speak with?"

It is an international group.  I might be in the minority as American.  I know there are Vietnamese members and many others.  I don't speak Vietnamese or Belarusian or Hindi, and maybe none of our other Moderators do.  Everything in the group happens in English, which forces many of them to use online translators or co-workers to try to converse with the rest of us in English.  The content of the group is rather technical, so 90% of it is tech-talk without the need to really understand the language beyond the main points.

I think we would know it if someone was spamming the group.

Good question! I'm scratching my head on that one, too.

I believe it would fix a problem that does exist.  They couldn't get in, so couldn't do any damage to your other members.  I initially had my groups 'open', but went to Restricted on all of them.  Yes, it's a bit of work, but not so much that it can't be shared.

Out of curiosity, why would you allow members that you can't speak with?  Doesn't seem to me that there could be much information exchanged.  It would also have me wondering if members were spamming the group or having a valid discussion.

Please note, the things you are suggesting we do (making the group Restricted) fixes a problem that doesn't exist.

FYI, I brought up this issue about the newly subscribed AOL members because it looked like Groups.io was under another attack.  I think I was right about that.  I was not asking Mark to protect **our** group.

I'm sorry, but I don't have the time nor the means to hire a staff of international workers to screen every potential group member.  It's just not practical.  We are unpaid volunteers.  I do enough unpaid volunteer work already, I can't afford to hire several watchdogs.  Sorry.

Yeah, I realize it is a can of worms, it's been like that for decades.  It is a changing world so it doesn't excuse it, for sure.

We already have several group moderators.  We are all unpaid volunteers.  We don't speak all the world's languages.

I've made this fix.

if a member tries to repost a message the system adds a #repost hashtag. However, if this hashtag had the 'Use by Mods Only' attribute set, the member is left hanging with a blank screen after clicking Yes to confirm the repost.

I've changed it so that if the #repost hashtag is set to `Use by Mods Only` then the Repost option should only be shown to moderators.

Good thoughts. It’s like a community here. Vaccinate your group from this disease!

Then IMHO you are just asking for trouble, and it isn't just trouble for you but can be a problem for all sorts of people with no connection with Groups.io or any group hosted by it.

Perhaps if you have too many members from all around the world you need to appoint some moderators to help. Use of the Restricted Membership capability and the Pending Subscription message that it enables will usually stop spammers in their tracks because they will either not provide a meaningful response or (more likely) no response whatsoever.

We all have a part to play in keeping Groups.io free of troublemakers; I'm afraid that your current approach is likely to have the opposite effect. The Spam Control section of Settings is called Spam Control for a reason...

Allowing folks to join but keeping them moderated is still unsafe because you are letting them enter inside your house unchecked.

>>> But I'll gladly restrict them from posting until I know they are real.

Yeah, but they are already inside, and while they may not post, they can still receive email/harvest addresses or do other crap they shouldn't be doing, all day long, and there is nothing you can do about it because you are enabling/facilitating it.  If that rush of AOL address was a single one instead, you's have made nothing of it and wouldn't have reported it, and it would stay there NMM for years, quietly doing its thing.

Manual member approval (Restricted Membership checked) stops them at the door, and the only way they can come in if you let them.

Cheers,
Christos

Restricted in what way?  Anyone can join, but new members are Moderated.  I've got too many members from all around the world, to manually approve each and every one who wants to join, and many barely speak my language.  But I'll gladly restrict them from posting until I know they are real.
