Hi All,

I've just changed the code to treat these errors from Gmail as temporary. When we get one, we will continue to retry sending the email. Previously, we would set someone as bouncing immediately upon getting one of these errors. Hopefully this should help.

Hi,

Although Google says Gmail issues should be resolved for some, I think it is too early to send another bounce probe. I have sent an emergency admin notice to a group I manage, telling members to pause posting until Gmail issue is significantly resolved, which should be tonight (Pacific) at the earliest based on Google Workspace status dashboard posts.

Can Mark send out a notice to everyone so we know when we can request our members to unbounce themselves?  Right now, it seems premature to do so if they have to go back to unbouncing again shortly after.

Possible suggestion for Mark meanwhie: set the bouncing bar much higher temporarily.

We could do it if we could do it in bulk (i.e., checkbox all the bouncing members and select the action). However, the bouncing keeps recurring, so unbouncing no longer has any lasting effect. This is happening continually. Just got members back in to have them in bounce status again just minutes ago.

Our group just reported 350 gmail addresses bouncing shortly after 4PM EST (2000 UTC), and more since at a steady stream.

Whatever remedy there is for group owners we are not going to be able to individually unbounce subscribers. There are just too many for point & click remedies to be of any use to us.

Actually it's so bad now that I had to unbounce myself multiple times just now. Which makes sense since gmails continue to not reach me, so the more there are, the more times I'll have to unbounce. I expect to have to do it again in a few minutes.

To clarify, by "nothing to do with gmail" I meant that the bounce message is, or may be, as in my group's case, simply coming from a groups.io moderator attempting to get the member to unbounce by clicking on the link. The member's email (gmail) may be, as in the case of all of my gmail members, now working fine bt the bouncing status may be simply a remnant of yesterday's outage that just needs to be flipped.

I was unaware that Google still hasn't fixed this, but in the case of my group at least, members have unbounced and are now receiving emails. They all received a "you are bouncing" message this morning only because I sent it to them.

Hi All,

Like I said, it's an issue with Gmail, not us. Other email services are still reporting seeing this, so it appears that Google hasn't quite fixed things yet.

First thing in the morning Pacific (UTC-0800) I found that the copy of
Thunderbird I'd left running overnight was no longer authorized to
access my Gmail accounts. My receipt of messages from Groups.io via
those accounts was not interrupted at that time.

In the mid-afternoon my more active Gmail address went on Bouncing
status and I missed the receipt of several messages in both GMF and
Beta. I also missed the Bounce Probe (that I assume was attempted) and
only discovered my bouncing status because I visited the web site.

In GMF's Activity log the bouncing of Gmail accounts began around 2:45
pm Pacific and continued until about 3:41 pm.

The possible connection between the two events is that the bounce reason
was "The email account that you tried to reach does not exist". Not
exactly an authentication issue (inbound rather than outbound), but
still related to my Gmail account identity.

I think it's too bad that moderators can not unbounce someone when you know it was temporary.  If you send a new bounce probe and it is received then we should be able to unbounce them.

It certainly seems to be impacting primarily Gmail users. I run a list of nearly 1,400 members, and 259 were suddenly bouncing, almost all, if not all with Gmail addresses, and all within the last day or so, and I was one of those users suddenly bouncing. I am sure this had to do with the outage yesterday, as soon as Groups.io was unable to deliver messages, it put those email addresses in a bouncing state. So I would attribute this to the Gmail outage, but if I'm wrong please correct me.

That has nothing to do with gmail. AFAIK google/gmail is back up. That was a message from groups.io. You will not receive group messages until you yourself "unbounce" your account (set it to non-bouncing status), either via the link you were sent or by going to the site and unbouncing.
