You may not be able to do what you're asking.  Messages that were imported from YG were assigned to the email address that was used on YG.  If you used a different email address on GIO, they're not related.  There's a chance that you could merge the email addresses into one account if you have access to both, https://groups.io/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/understanding-groups-io-accounts/merging-accounts

moderated Group Moderation Setting #suggestion

Chris Jones

Use Group Moderation Setting is a checkbox available for Moderators to set on every group member's individual "page". It is the default setting for all group members unless a different Posting Privilege is selected.(Override:...)  It is also one of the options available in the recently implemented Members List filtering capability.

However, a new Owner or Moderator trying to find that setting might have a hard time because it is not named as such anywhere in the Settings page; under Settings > Spam Control it appears as Message Moderation.

Can I suggest that the words Message Moderation be replaced by Group Moderation Setting?

This also has implications in the Owners Manual. Message Moderation (as in the context of the Settings page) is set out in para 3.5.3 (pdf version) but without any mention of it being the Group Moderation Setting. The words "Group Moderation Setting" do not appear until para 11.6, followed by 14.1.3 and finally in 14.4.

IMHO it would be much clearer (mainly for new Owners & Moderators) if para 3.5.3 was titled Group Moderation Setting as well.

I believe everything you want is already available.  You could check https://groups.io/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/working-with-group-messages to make sure.  The problem is getting people to use it.  As Bob said, reply is only for existing topics.

You also have the capability of splitting (including with a new subject line) or merging topics to keep things as you want them.  See https://groups.io/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-group-topics-and-messages for more info.  As an owner, you can easily edit the subject line of any topic.

Reply is specifically for replying to an already defined topic.
New Topic is what you should use for a new New Topic.
Far too many people would simply use Reply w/o changing the topic which causes many others to miss important to not read messages that might affect them but had mismatching topic and body.
Use New Topic for a New Topic.

Even when I reply online to a group I own, I cannot edit the Subject Line. I am forced back to my email provider to create "a new topic."

Members reply often and change a topic without recreating a post. It's human nature. A post might include 2.or more topics and an aside or 2 that garner life... but are stuck with a deceptive Subject line.

Not very cool for archives or for avoiding opening a post that has veered away from the original intent and is not of interest to some.

Be nice to see this improved by end of year, if feasible & reasonable, given other priorities. Some Members ARE Dutiful. We owners usually ask folks to amend Subject lines. Neither they nor owners can do this within the site...

Sure seems like a lot of redundancy to me.  Screen real estate is precious, especially on the mobile version.  They're only one click as is, so it wouldn't do anything that I can see.

moderated "Claim"ing a pending post #suggestion

Malcolm Austen

When I select a pending membership from the list, the action drop-down includes a 'claim' action which is great.

However, when viewing pending posts I can see no way to claim one other than by using [Edit] followed by [Cancel]. Can we have a [Claim] button please?

Malcolm.

I have wondered why the two are separate here while most flavors of SQL support multiple types.

I support adding a proper DATETIME column without removing the other two so users don't become upset by any changes.

BTW, SQLShack has a nice post on the subject.

Hi Mark,

when trying to use a Custom Range filter on the Messages screen on my mobile (Galaxy S7 Edge), the calendar is not displayed correctly. Turning the screen to landscape mode doesn't help either.

On a mobile phone there is no filter option (in portrait or landscape) even though there seems to be space to display it.
After playing around with my browser window widths, it seems that the page styling will display the filter button only if the width is sufficient to display the resulting menu (which is, frankly, pretty wide). At least that's the way it seems to be working on this end. If the alternative is to display a button that "does nothing," this behavior may be preferable.
On my Android phone, things like the search box on the member list and the list of hashtags when using the Add Tags during message composition appear in separate windows so I think the same could be done for the new member list filters.

Thank you, Mark, this is a really useful new feature.

I think we all know how unusual it is in the business world generally, and IT specifically, for user-requested changes to be quickly implemented through this kind of dialog. Just more reason to support GIO.

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

April 8, 2021:

  • DOCS: Updates from Nina.
  • NEW: Each hashtag can now have a footer, which will be included in any message tagged with that hashtag. The footer will also be displayed in the New Post page if the person selects the hashtag from the Add Tags dropdown.

April 7, 2021:

  • NEW: New filter pop-up on the Members page. Discussion

April 6, 2021:

  • INTERNAL: Migrated several machine instances because Linode is retiring old hardware.
  • BUGFIX: In some instances, when editing a repeat event, it would cause all existing RSVPs to be deleted, when it shouldn't have.
  • BUGFIX: Fixed display of the Starts On field when editing a repeating event.
  • CHANGE: The URL structure for individual photos has changed so that the URLs are now stable/refer to photo ids instead of relative placement of the photo in the album.

Take care everyone.

Some observations so far:

  • The font size when entering the hashtag footer text seems smaller than that used in the hashtag name and description.
  • When composing a message online, the extra panel that appears with the hashtag footer text does not show the text in the order of the hashtags in the subject (it may not be an error but it feels wrong).
  • The hashtag footer text strings that appear in an email follow on from each other so you can't tell where the text from one hashtag ends and another starts.
  • There's no way of knowing which text relates to which hashtag (and it seems counter intuitive to have to add the name of the hashtag in the text to achieve that)

Andy
