locked Notice of Pricing Change

Edited

Like everyone, we were taken by surprise when Yahoo announced they will be shutting down Yahoo Groups in just a few short weeks. Groups.io runs a world-class email groups service and has quickly been recognized as the best migration option for Yahoo Groups users. We are flattered by this recognition, and have been overwhelmed with traffic and group transfer requests as a result. We have spent the days since Yahoo's announcement diligently adding new server capacity and starting to work through an unprecedented number of transfer requests.

Fortunately, Groups.io has always been built to scale and already has a user base in excess of 1 million users today. In order to accommodate this major growth phase while maintaining our excellent service levels and industry-leading functionality, we will need to adjust our pricing as follows. As of 9AM Pacific Time, October 22:

  1. The annual fee for premium groups is $20/month or $220/year. (Premium groups in existence before that date are grandfathered in at their current fee.)

  2. As is already the case, all transferred groups are required to be premium groups for the first year. The $220 transfer fee counts for the premium fee, so once having paid the transfer fee, transferred groups are exempt from paying the premium fee for the first year.

As you know, Yahoo has given us incredibly short deadlines. New content cannot be uploaded to Yahoo Groups after October 28 and all user generated content will be deleted from Yahoo Groups on December 14. To ensure that we have enough time to export all data off of Yahoo, we have set a deadline of midnight, December 1 Pacific Time for all new transfer requests to be received. Assuming that Yahoo doesn’t have any server issues, we believe that we’ll be able to export all data out of Yahoo before they delete all the data. However, in order to maintain a high level of service to our existing customers, we cannot import groups into our service as fast as we can export them out of Yahoo. There may be some delay before we can import all groups. If you wish to have your transfer prioritized, the group transfer page allows you to pay an additional one-time fee of $200 (this will go live at 9AM Pacific Time, October 22).

We welcome the opportunity to elevate the groups email experience for Yahoo users. We are committed to making the migration process as seamless as possible. Thank you for choosing Groups.io.

Thanks, Mark

Note: The original message specified changes in new free groups. Those changes have been rolled back.

moderated Is this Forum the best place to get updates about the YahooGroups Apocalypse Migration?

Greetings,

I'm brand new here and just paid $110 to try to save my beloved warriorpoest archive on yahoogroups and wondering if this beta-Group forum is the best place to get a sense of the backlog of transfer orders and how long it may take to fill them, how groups.io is handling it all?

Also would like to be updated right away if Verizon is doing anything to interfere with the saving of people's data and how we can generate lots of pressure so they work with Groups.io rather than against them? Historically their interference has been more about maintenance and repair negligence rather than obstruction.

I suspect this event that started a week ago is going to redefine Groups.io in huge ways and there will be a giant revenue boost and upgrades in infrastructure to handle it all and I want to find a way... I mean really, really want to find a way get regular updates with how it's going? Everyday if possible?

Is this Beta Group Forum the best place to get all that info? Or is there a better groups.io for that?

Be well, Deane

Due to the massive influx of new groups, I need to upgrade our main database machine. The site will be down for about two hours. I apologize for the short notice, but with the surprise nature of Yahoo shutting Groups, I had no advanced warning.

This downtime starts at 1:00AM UTC Tuesday.

Mail will be queued during the downtime and will be sent when we are back on-line.

Well, as a user and moderator, I want to thank Mark and his staff(?) for all
the work you've been putting in. Based on the volume of messages here and on
GMF, there are a LOT of Y!Groups moving.
I consider myself lucky in that I moved my 3 groups before the rush (and 2
even before I had to pay for it), but I'm a member of another group in the
process.
You guys are doing a great job, keep it up!

Deborah; J_Catlady is right in saying this, but as it's a quick answer I'll give it here; use the Pending Subscription message capability.

Any further queries about it on GMF please. :)

Hi,

You should join the GMF group and ask these kinds of “how to” questions there. Beta is for suggesting new features, improvements, etc.

I just created a new group on io, and I am going to transfer my old Yahoo group onto it.

I have a question: I see a new pending member I do not know.

When Yahoo used to work, pending members would receive an automated email asking them to write a short presentation so I could check whether they correspond to the group's purpose.

How can I set this in io groups ?

with many thanks

It ain't going to make me afraid either as at that time most of us in
the UK will be snuggly tucked up in bed. Thanks Mark.

I expect the Yahoogroups surge is huge. What is the current delay for
processing transfers? Expecting one of my groups to transfer soon (not
one I moderate).

That's SO much more tedious. There are a lot of them--and a lot of other Yahoo! groups have this problem.

No, but I don't think it will lead to anything.  Uploading the attachments to the Files area and putting links where the [attachment] info is seems like the way to go.

I'm reopening this feature request in light of the mass migration beginning to take place from Yahoo. I am planning to port the group to Groups.io.

My Yahoo group, like many others, is heavily populated with attachments. Around 25% of the messages have attachments. One of the primary values of the group is its service as an archive for these attachments. New volunteers to area of disaster recovery read these attachments to learn about FEMA policies, state policies, and resources available to help disaster survivors.

Unfortunately, the migration from Yahoo includes messages, file, photos, and members, but does not include attachments. And it is likely that there is insufficient time to develop and test that feature before the Yahoo shutdown on December 14.

I have already downloaded the messages, files, and attachments so the data remains available. It's 0.21 GB in size, so size will not be an issue. If I had the ability to add attachments to the message, I could add the attachments at leisure once the port takes place.

As it is, I am faced with the more tedious task of loading each attachment to the file store, then editing each message to include a link to the associated file(s).

As I understand it, the decision was made to disallow moderator addition of attachments because it was felt that content was sacrosanct and shouldn't be tampered with. In this case, I am restoring content to its original form. Inserting a link instead of an attachment would be distorting the form.

I believe I've made a good case for permitting moderators to add attachments, at least for a period after porting from Yahoo. I understand that it could be an easy change.

But as I think about it, I wonder whether the global decision was the right approach. I'm thinking that perhaps each group creator ought to be able to make that decision. Since our group's messages are a reference, an archive, and a resource, there's no need for long-term retention of short messages like "About time!", "I agree", or the inevitable personal message sent to the group by mistake. I prune these messages. Since I'm taking this liberty with content, restoring attachments seems like a small thing in comparison.

Is it too late to reopen this discussion?

Hang in there Mark - and do what you can when you can. I know that you're trying your best to do everything for everyone.... and on the other hand, the people that have been hanging on to YG all these months, well...  they could have avoided this (and so could you!).
I know the workload is horrendous and will likely only get worse; I hope that even with that considered that YG is playing nice with the transfers as opposed to the issues that were going on when we moved 18 months ago. Take care of you -

I don't think that that's feasible without seriously infringing on people's privacy, and a huge amount of programming

I wholeheartedly agree. Yahoogroups COULD have been far more popular and useful if the public directory had worked and had been properly moderated. When someone like me does a groupsearch for "nederland" or "nederlands" and gets thousands of "hits" about fake sexdatingsites....that does not provide happy users.

Of course it has to be up to the founder of the group whether a group is "listed in directory" or not

moderated Re: re-requesting group setting: "who can invite members"

Some posters in this thread are missing what this is all about. Inviting 10 -40 people at a time has nothing to do with it. Adding and email subscribe address has nothing to do with it. I think, billsf9c, that you are new to groups.io. If you have any questions about what I'm requesting, feel free to reply to me privately and I will explain it. I think you don't understand the concept here.

I won't respond further here because (a) I think the request is clear to everyone else and (b) Mark has said he needs some space on feature requests.

For US who may invit 10 - 40 folks enmass we NEED it. Other folks with 1 or 2 pals can offer the email subscribe addy or url.

Yes, and as you said, the option could be disabled anyway. I have to agree, I would really like that as well.
Thanks.

I requested this in the distant past but it is more relevant today: In my block/neighborhood group, I want people to be allowed to invite other neighbors to the group. The only way I can do that now is the cumbersome method of making everyone a moderator with only one permission. But people are now asking me, "Why am I a moderator?" etc, and I also don't want everyone to be privy to the activity logs and other data.

Bottom line, it would be extremely convenient to have a group setting "Who can invite other members" with choices "moderators" or "subscribers".

The saying "be careful of what you ask for" comes to mind.

Would you really want "all" subscribers to be able to invite others to the group?
