moderated Downtime this morning (Sun 2/10/19)

Hello,

The site was mostly unreachable again this morning from about 4:17AM Pacific Time until 5:12AM Pacific Time. I am still investigating what happened.

Thanks,
Mark

Olympia Friends Meeting

Oh no. I am finally about ready (this week was plan) to transfer our small (under 140 member) group that has been around since 2001 to groups.io.

I've downloaded the member list so I have that but really need to be able to transfer the message history (including, I hoped, attachments), photos, and files.

So is that not going to be possible now?

Thanks, Mark! And thanks also to J and Shal, for bringing this up. A very logical extension of the 'Claim' process, since the responsibility for such a request has been claimed by someone, and the message is no longer simply being ignored.

Oh doesn't it?

No... "Hold" suggests a deliberate delay in taking any action.

A bit late to this conversation but while I like the idea of integration moderation variation for the moderators (sorry, I like to pun)
this change disabled our Facebook page integration which was working fine till the change went into effect.
I have the moderate box checked and nothing is getting through since the change on two of my groups.
We don't do a lot of FB but feel that it's important to pass the info along when we do things, especially Fundraisers since FB fundraisers have no charges except foreign exchange charges.  So they are essentially free and people can look at all of the fundraisers even without logging into FB.

Looking for ideas here.

Mark,

This effectively is also a non-automated work-around to require Subscription Requests to answer Addition Information Needed questions (sent as a Pending Subscription notice) before the Subscription Request is acted on AND without starting the 14 day Subscription Approval Needed clock.

Thank you,
Michael

As Catlady wrote (#19732):
| Our group usually acts on subscription requests immediately, and so far we have not had to be concerned with the two-week time-out. However, occasionally we get a request where it's necessary to put the membership request on hold until more information is known. We are in the midst of such a request right now and I found myself worrying that this person would time out before we could act on it if getting the info takes more than two weeks, which seems likely.

I certainly found that things were back to normal (in the UK) just before 1530 GMT, which is consistent with your 7.25 am  - I presume PacificTime!

I'm not aware of any issues. Perhaps do a force reload: hold down the shift key while pressing the browser reload button.

typo: the reason for my request in the former thread ("extend claimed-by feature to pending subs")

is to convey that specific information.

Not in my opinion. "Claimed" conveys that someone has taken something for their own. The sole reason for my request in this thread is to be able to convey that specific information.

The extension to taking the pending sub out of auto-timeout is just that: an extension.

moderated Downtime this morning

Hi All,

At 6:25am, two of the seven nodes in our elasticsearch search cluster crashed. This caused connections to the other search nodes to take a very long time. This created a backup which led to the exhaustion of all database connections (in a way similar to what happened yesterday). This caused the site to go down. For reasons I don't know yet, I wasn't paged, so I didn't find out about it until I tried to log in. I was able to quickly restart the nodes and get the site back up at 7:25am.

All your data is safe and everything is back to normal. I will do a proper post mortem and calendar entry later. Sorry for the downtime and any resulting stress.

Thanks,
Mark

The idea is that it is claimed *by* a particular mod. So ‘hold’ doesn’t really fit, semantically or grammatically.

Given the actual function can I suggest that "Hold" would be a better term than "Claim"?

moderated Re: Calendar. Specific day of the week #suggestion

Michael Pavan

What isn’t currently possible is to set up a recurring Calendar event for a relative date like Election Day - a date that is x days after (or before) a fixed date, in this case:
the Monday after the first Tuesday of November in even numbered years
which is
6 days after the first Tuesday of November in even numbered years.

The first Tuesday of November in even numbered years is possible
[set up the first date, repeat monthly every 24 months]
but not a date that is 6 days later...

Changes to the site this week:

  • INTERNAL: Work on automating a tool to test database backups.
  • CHANGE: Do not delete pending messages or pending subscriptions older than 14 days if they've been claimed.
  • INTERNAL: Generating a lot more config files automatically through software, to make it easier to change configurations/add machines.
  • INTERNAL: Added ability to off-load queries to replica databases and have started doing so to reduce the load on the main database.
  • NEW: You can now claim pending subscribers.
  • BUGFIX: Event reminders did not include organizer name.
  • NEW: Including a login link in direct add notifications.
  • NEW: You can now invite someone to join a subgroup (they will be added to the parent as well if they accept).

Have a good weekend everyone.

Another -- consistency between messages and the wiki.
You "X Cancel" a message edit, but "X Discard" a wiki page edit.   Is there a functional difference between those?

Sure would be more friendly/convenient if

Each display page
  • Had a small "Edit" button at the TOP (like MediaWiki) for logged-in users.

  • It's an unnecessary PITA to have to scroll to the end each time when making and saving multiple edits on a LONG page.

The photo editing options (contrast, etc) dialog box
  • Edits displayed real time, as you move the slide-bar
  • The slide-bar locked onto the keyboard L <=> R arrow keys.
  • Adding a border to and/or a (simple) frame to pix was an option.

While composing/editing
  • pages were saved in Wiki Drafts as are message drafts

The Wiki TOC display box
  • The title could display enhanced text (bolt, color, etc.)
  • Width could be user-set.  Or alternately, to simply have the box free-span across the page.
  • The box is too narrow for long headings to display nicely, especially if there are level 2.3.4 headings in the TOC.

PDFs
  • Could reside in a Wiki space, rather than in the Files space.
  • Could be hidden so they are available to only the wiki viewers or mods.
