I wholeheartedly agree. Yahoogroups COULD have been far more popular and useful if the public directory had worked and had been properly moderated. When someone like me does a groupsearch for "nederland" or "nederlands" and gets thousands of "hits" about fake sexdatingsites....that does not provide happy users.

Of course it has to be up to the founder of the group whether a group is "listed in directory" or not

The announcement that Mark has just made
Is not gonna make me afraid.
The site's going down
But I'm not gonna frown,
Cuz the downtime is just to upgrade.

Downtime to upgrade main database machine #downtime

When:
Monday, 21 October 2019
6:00pm to 8:00pm
(UTC-07:00) America/Los Angeles

Description:

Due to the massive influx of new groups, I need to upgrade our main database machine. The site will be down for about two hours. I apologize for the short notice, but with the surprise nature of Yahoo shutting Groups, I had no advanced warning.

This downtime starts at 1:00AM UTC Tuesday.

Mail will be queued during the downtime and will be sent when we are back on-line.

Duane, what am I missing, I don't see a search button on the Directory page of a particular Group. Is there a way Group subscribers can search for other subscribers by country, area of practice, etc?

moderated Re: re-requesting group setting: "who can invite members"

Some posters in this thread are missing what this is all about. Inviting 10 -40 people at a time has nothing to do with it. Adding and email subscribe address has nothing to do with it. I think, billsf9c, that you are new to groups.io. If you have any questions about what I'm requesting, feel free to reply to me privately and I will explain it. I think you don't understand the concept here.

I won't respond further here because (a) I think the request is clear to everyone else and (b) Mark has said he needs some space on feature requests.

For US who may invit 10 - 40 folks enmass we NEED it. Other folks with 1 or 2 pals can offer the email subscribe addy or url.

Yes, and as you said, the option could be disabled anyway. I have to agree, I would really like that as well.
Thanks.

In this particular group, yes.

I requested this in the distant past but it is more relevant today: In my block/neighborhood group, I want people to be allowed to invite other neighbors to the group. The only way I can do that now is the cumbersome method of making everyone a moderator with only one permission. But people are now asking me, "Why am I a moderator?" etc, and I also don't want everyone to be privy to the activity logs and other data.

Bottom line, it would be extremely convenient to have a group setting "Who can invite other members" with choices "moderators" or "subscribers".

The saying "be careful of what you ask for" comes to mind.

Would you really want "all" subscribers to be able to invite others to the group?

It already exists, but maybe not in the form you're looking for, for each group.  There is no site wide search, and hopefully never will be.

An inexpensive searchable member directory with current Group.io communication capabilities is exactly what many organizations are looking for, and the value is significant. Is a searchable directory something that is being considered by Groups.io management?

I have been involved in leadership positions with 7 non-profit organizations over the last 15 years. All of those groups have been looking for this combination. Platforms that focus on member directories tend to be complex, expensive and difficult to implement. Platforms like Groups.io, and Yahoo Groups which focus primarily on email communication all seem to avoid, ignore, or misunderstand the value of a searchable and member-modifiable directory. (Many professionals don’t want to or can’t use Google Groups or Facebook.) Is there some technical reason why it is hard for Groups.io to add a searchable member directory?

Other posters in this and the Group Managers Forum have also identified the common value for organizations, such as being able to find specialists and other practitioners.

Hi Robin,

This is how we add that feature on my groups:
   * Left Menu, Click on Settings.  That brings you to the General Settings page.

   * Scroll down to the 6th box marked Message Formatting
   * See the 1st box is
Message Footer.  Type the communication here.  It will conveniently appear at the end of each emailed Message & Digest.
   * One last step.  Be sure to scroll down to the bottom of page.  Save your work by clicking the box Update Group.

Emojis & Hotlinks can also be used in the footer.  When someone clicks on that line, instantly a tab opens to that page on GIO website - files, messages, databases, photos, etc.     Here's how:  Type the footer out in an email draft.  Add the hotlink & emojis.  Copy the email text.  Paste it into the message footer box.  Below are two examples of the type of footers we use - one is dramatic, one is not.

Hope this helps!
Jennifer

Example 1.
Click to view photos on group site:  https://groups.io/g/GROUP-NAME/photos

Example 2.
[ The emojis may not show on this beta message board. So you know, this footer has attention getting emojis on either side of the type.]

!! NOTE !! Click an INSTANT LINK  below to go directly to our Group Website

Holy cow! I happened to peruse "newest groups." There has literally been a new group created *every two minutes*, all day today and probably stretching back well before that!

moderated Update/Request

Hi All,

So, what a week. On Wednesday, we had 20x the number of groups created that we do on a normal day. And each day after that has been even more. Our web traffic is about double normal.

I am working to keep up with everything. I would like to ask a favor. If you have a feature request, please postpone asking it for a couple weeks, until things calm down. I most likely won't read it if it's posted now, and if I do read it, I'll most likely forget it. If you have a bug report, as usual please send it to support@groups.io

Thanks!
Mark

I remember how hard Mark worked to streamline the bottom links on messages, but is there any way to add VISIT YOUR GROUP? Or any other link to groups.io? I keep it bookmarked, but with all these new members coming on board, I think it might be helpful.

I think it’s important to know whether they haven’t received it or whether they’re just not responding. Or if not important, would be nice. There’s only one group involved in this particular scenario.

Of which group?  I have people that join 2 or 3 of my groups at the same time, but they show as NC in all of them until they confirm.  (I only resend confirmation from one group when they join more than one.)  They could also be joining other groups at the same time, so those would also show NC.  I don't really care if I have a record since they won't be part of the site (and group) until they confirm.
