I have a qiestion regarding the hashtags please.

Is there a way to increase the number of hashtags we can apply to a post at all please?

For a recipe sharing group, 5 hastags is simply not enough by the time we hashtag for Country, Ethnic origin, and Type or Category of a recipe, this leaves us only two hashtags to assign for main ingredients to aid members in their searches.

Is there a reason why we can only assign 5 hashtags?

Pamela,

I think I need to find time to educate myself on how to generate
reports etc.
What I generally do is Export the table in CSV format, then paste that into Excel. There one has very flexible ways to format and page break the table.

I haven't tried that with a table with maps in it, so that might complicate matters.

If you don't have/use Excel, there are also free spreadsheet programs available like the one in LibreOffice.

Thanks for the suggestions Toby.

No so easy to do when you have a 70+ year old brain LOL

I have managed to get it sorted this time but it has taken me many days where with Yahoo it was a simple matter of click a button.  Never mind -- we live in hope.

Thanks again for your input,

I've seen this before in the past. Yahoo sometimes asks for a CAPTCHA on login if it has some reason to be suspicious of the account, like it's been a while since its last login. Something about the groups.io transfer process is probably triggering that. If you can log in manually to get a login cookie, then don't log out, and use that cookie in the transfer process, that might fix it. You might have to repeat the process every now and then.

It's ironic that you have to go to groups.io to find out about what yahoo is doing. Yahoo themselves don't even seem to know what's going on there. :)

That's odd. I just tried signing in on a browser I've never used for Yahoo, and it was the regular name/password login, no other steps.

This was with a yahoo.com email address, and I then wondered if there was a problem with inviting a new member with a non-Yahoo address, such as the IO transfer client.

I went back to my regular login, under which I'm the owner of several groups, and invited an email address that Yahoo has never seen before. There was one step on the invite screen that I didn't remember: a check box for "Add only to mailing list".

I checked the box and sent the invite. The usual confirmation email arrived, and when I clicked through to Yahoo I was able to log in with no additional questions or security procedures.

Mark, I've just invited transfer@groups.io to a defunct Yahoo list that I happen to own (name is nawcc). Can you check if you can accept the invitation?

Hi All,

It appears that Yahoo changed their login system sometime in the last 24 hours or so, which broke our group export code. I don't know if or when I'll be able to work around it as it appears to want to go through some sort of captcha system.

Please pass this along to any interested parties.

Artin,

Now I have created a filter in NameCheap Private Email, with the
condition mailinglist contains groups.io, and as an action move to
folder mailing lists. This works well, but if I follow a topic and I
receive the messages that have been sent before, they will go to my
inbox and not to the mailing list folder.

Interesting. It implies that the "catch-up" messages are not marked with the Mailing-List header field.

As a work-around check the To field: normal group postings are sent out as To the group posting address, if the catch-up messages are also you could use that for your filter instead.

I also noticed today that when I reply from Thunderbird to a message
that was already sent, This message does not go to the list but to the
sender.

Hm... This implies the catch-up messages are also not marked with the Reply-To field, which normally reflects the group's Reply To setting.

I guess your work-around would be to manually replace the sender's address with the group posting address in your reply.

So it seems that with the messages sent before I followed the topic
and which were later sent to me, it is not recognized that they come
from a mailing list. Do you know what the problem is ...

I believe you've identified the problem (they are not given the usual outbound list header fields).

... and can this be solved?

Apart from the work-arounds, putting the "proper" fields in the header of those messages would be something for either support, or for the beta group (Groups.io's official "suggestion box").

I don't normally use the Following Only subscription option so I've not run into this. It is possible that the lack of these header fields was previously discussed in beta, maybe you can search for that topic there to see if there's a reason for it, or if adding them is something that should be suggested.

moderated Add permalinks to Wiki pages

Mark,

I'd like to have permalinks on wiki pages.

Reason: An issue has come up in GMF where we split a page into two pages for better organization, and the complaint was made that the action broke the link for the original page (the title changed).

Exactly like message numbers, these can be a serial number issued at page creation and never re-used. Like a message number it can be shown on the right, near the edit date and revision(s) link. It can use exactly the same format (number and icon) for familiarity.

As with message numbers I'd prefer them to be group-unique to keep them short, rather than site unique like Topic numbers, but that's not an important feature compared to having them at all.

That would give us something like:
https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/12345

rather than
https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/long-hyphenated-encoded-copy-of-the-wiki-page-title

If desirable to prevent potential namespace conflict, change "wiki" in the URL to "wikilink" or something so that wiki permalinks are syntactically distinct from wiki title links.

Oh yes, and I'll throw a bump on my earlier request for permalink icons on all user-supplied content items:

Group icon is appreciated. I hope it can be displayed when I'm reviewing pending messages for approval or rejection. (i.e. not only in the "mobile" (narrow) home page). See request topic from a few months ago.

  • NEW: In addition to a cover photo, a group can now have an icon. It's currently used only on the mobile home page.

Pamela,
It's unlikely that groups.io will ever provide a "print table" feature - the formatting options are as numerous as the number of people using databases.
Two thoughts -
  • You say you create a database of the year's events/items - Why not generate a PDF report (using Excel for example) of that year's info for members to download and print?
  • "reproduce part of the ... database" - If what you want to copy/paste is on one page, try selecting the rows of interest, copy as plain text into Word, select the text, Insert Table, Convert text to table (separate text at Tabs).  Should give you a table to use for the subset of the data needed.

Just some ideas that might make things easier until when/if groups.io provides some facility to do what you're looking for.
Thanks
Toby

moderated Print option for Databases?

Pamela Tatt

I have trolled through messages and found a couple of comments back in 2016 and 2017 asking if it would be possible to have a 'Print Table' option in Databases.
Obviously not enough people have requested this so I am opening up the conversation again here.
In our group we have a Database "calendar" at the start of the year listing all of the charities we are supporting throughout the year.  Our older members used to be able to print it off and keep in a folder so that they can plan ahead to make their donations in advance.  We are a charity knitting/crocheting/sewing group supporting needy people across Australia.
I, personally, find it difficult to transfer the database into another spreadsheet so cant expect my members who are less computer literate than me to do it.

I also find not being able to copy and paste straight from the database a time consuming problem.  I have to reproduce part of the Charity of the Month Calendar database on to our public website and it takes so long to go into every individual entry to edit, copy, paste each line.

So my question is -- would a Print Table option be possible any time in the near future?
Thanks for your time,
Pamela

Received from J_Catlady at 12/15/2018 01:22 AM UTC:

Here's an unrestricted group:

Here's a restricted one:

See the difference?

Yes, and I apologize.

By way of explanation, not excuse, I have three groups. One requires membership (and approval) for any access. One permits read/only access to non-members, membership requires approval. One requires membership, but it's granted without any approval necessary. In my testing I should have tested the first and the last, but instead tested first and second.

The mind is the second thing to go and I forget the first.

Again, I apologize.

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • BUGFIX (in process): Changed how we store the name of the person who originated a topic to fix a couple of bugs that would cause the person's name to not be displayed on the Topics page. Database is currently being updated to support the fix.
  • CHANGE: 'Public Groups' -> 'Publicly Listed Groups'
  • NEW: We are now dropping all email from numbered qq.com addresses, and we treat such addresses as invalid when registering on the website.
  • NEW: In addition to a cover photo, a group can now have an icon. It's currently used only on the mobile home page.
  • BUGFIX: We were not re-writing gmail.com From addresses for senders that did not have 'I always want copies of my own emails' checked.

Have a good weekend everyone.

If this is done already - why the need to keep on discussing it.
I just know it doesn't matter to most people the how to join wording.

They are just interested in joining. The people in my circle don't even notice if they are joining a restricted or non restricted group.

They just want to join a group based upon the genre of the group.

I am not going to write anymore in this discussion.
