Hi Bill,
Look at the groups IO home page, then list groups by name (publicly listed groups) - and you’ll see 23756 at the bottom.
Not sure if you are also interested in the non listed groups - and if anyone would be willing to publish that number.

moderated Annoying message after duplicate moderation approval replies sent

Dave Wade

Folks,

I tend to moderate my groups by E-Mail, and as I live in the UK, often folks post when I am asleep or not monitoring my e-mails.

To keep things moving we tend to have multiple moderators, so it often happens I reply to a request to approve a message after its already been approved by someone else.

When I do I get a “Message Blocked” response with a big red traffic light image, and the reason hidden in some small print in the bottom, and a copy of my message.

Is there really any need for any of this? Why not just silently discard the message?

If it must be sent couldn’t a simple plain text message suffice.

J,

Perhaps rather than “limping along” they are now enjoying their newfound freedom. No more moderation, no more having their e-mails modified. Just post and it appears.

(for those that don’t know Yahoo has removed moderation of messages)

I would just chill until the spammers take over, as has quickly happened with many groups, as without effective moderation of content, it will be difficult to keep groups with any sort of public visibility clear of spam.

And if you don’t have public visibility then as members fall away the groups will shrink to a size where they become useless.

Subject: [beta] OT: question for anyone still running a Yahoo group

If anyone is still running a yahoo group, could you contact me offlist? I have some questions. I'm now running the groups.io "takeover" of our block's former yahoo group (they refused to transfer), but the yahoo group is still limping along in the background and I have some questions about what that moderator can and can't do in terms of inviting people to the old group, managing the membership list, etc. My email address is
j.olivia.catlady [at] gmail.com, or you can PM me from this message.
Thanks.

Oopsie, forgot the attachment I was meaning to add to my previous message:

moderated Following a new topic sends out catch-up emails with missing group [Subject Tag] #bug

This happens only when a user follows a new (to them) topic, which tells the Architect to email right away the OP post and any existing replies to the member so they can catch-up if needed, at least for the Individual Email users, with either All-Messages or Following-Only & First-Messages-Also & Follow-Replies. (I only tested those two, so not sure if it will do it for digest, etc)

The email subject is not populated with the group's [Subject Tag] on those emails, but it should, shouldn't it?

Cheers,
Christos

If you have any other public questions about Yahoo Groups' new mode of operation, Nightowl runs the "MMSanctuary" group here on Groups.io, and it seems to be a good source for people discovering how to accomplish things over there (if they can be).

It doesn't, which is why I prefaced it with OT, and why I asked specifically for PM responses, in hopes that it would not clutter up the message list.
Thanks to all the people who have so helpfully responded in PMs.

I don't understand what this has to do with "the Groups.io service and how it can be improved during our beta period".

But only for those that have chosen to be included.  This would be a limitation for normal members looking for someone.  (Owners/Mods could use the Members list - which you can make available to members.)

The only choice that won't have the number (x-y of z) at the upper right and lower left is Infinite Scroll.  In that case, it will eventually be the number of members in the group!  This has been mentioned upmteen times on GMF.

moderated Add Member Search Capability to Subscriber Directory Screen #suggestion #done

Bill Hazel

Currently Administrators/Owners and Moderators have the ability to search the Members screen which is unavailable to Subscribers.
The Directory screen, available to Administrators/Owners, Moderators and Subscribers doesn't.

I request that the Directory page have Search capability also as depicted in modified screen shot below.
Search should be able to find Username and/or email using partial information without an asterisk.
A search for "Dave" would include all Daves in the directory as well as any email addresses with dave embedded George@... (fictional)

This request is based on the long running and evolving thread (9+ months, 40+ posts) "Finding posts by a member" with the goal of providing a concise suggestion.

moderated Re: Column Width Problem

Thank for the tip!  I was expecting the adjustment to be on the page, but next time I'll peruse the settings before I complain. That said, I note that I no longer seem to have  count of members displayed _on that page_.  Owell.

moderated Have the Message Search include all Subgroups

Scott Chase

Hi,
Most of my group members are active in our Main group and do all their searches from there. But, there is more content accumulating in our Subgroups, too.

A newer feature was already added to the Subgroup settings to "Allow Parent Subscribers to Post", which is great. But when members search from the Main Group, they see none of the Subgroup content in the search results, even if they are members or have posted content to a Subgroup as Allowed by that previous setting.

I'd like to see a checkbox on the Message Search popup that defaults to "Include your Subgroups in search". Then, in the main search results list, put the Subgroup name in brackets, at the beginning of each of the Subgroup titles in the resulting search results. Just like with e-mail. Then if they are a member of the group or are Allowed to post to that group, the content will be listed and they can click on it to get there and read it.

For example, try searching from this Main beta group for : getfiledirectory

I'd like it to return the following in the Search results...

[api]  Re: getfiledirectory
No, wait, I just forgot to set the limit high enough, which is why I only got a list of folders (there were more than 10 folders in my test folder). See, when I ask for a list of files in "/", and

Go to your Account settings, then Preferences; scroll down the page to Items Per Page; this will currently be on "20" but it can be set to 50, 100 or Infinite Scroll. If you change the setting don't forget to Update Preferences.

Note that this is an account level setting and will affect the presentation of all your groups. I have not tried it myself but there has been mention of Infinite Scroll sometimes giving trouble; others will be able to clarify.

I also find it annoying that the email address column is (a) too narrow and (b) not adjustable. I'd like to have more reasonable default widths, as well as a way to adjust column widths interactively. (For extra credit, the web site could save my preferences somewhere.)

On a vaguely related note, I'd like to be able to (arbitrarily) increase the number of entries that are displayed.  I'm currently in the process of migrating a 600+ member meetup. Even at our current 24 members, being limited to viewing 20 members at a time is a nuisance; I hate to think what it will be like as the migration continues.
