It's not either or. You can do both. They're not exactly official cats. They reflect what's actually there in the 7000 groups I looked through. To you the exact kind of radio group you are is important and you can use keywords and tags to define this. To anyone uninterested in radio it's just one big lump with a massive following that buries niche interest groups Being able to exclude that entire category would be very helpful. The cats are broad on purpose and based purely on large group numbers. A search presumes you have a good idea of what you want to find and that the keywords or tags you use match the ones the group owner used. Cats and searches are like catapillers and butterflies. They do different things well.

Message search is behind
Hi All, Indexing messages is about 17 hours behind at this point. That means that messages sent last night around midnight Pacific Time are only just now becoming searchable. This affects the per-month display on the group home pages. It may also be responsible for the Emailed Photos sort issue talked about here today. I made one change that will help, but by the nature of it, won't start helping until probably tomorrow morning. I expect to do further optimizations as well to try to get it under control. I'll keep you posted. Thanks, Mark

Theft of Yahoo! Group mailing lists ?
Doesn't your Yahoo Transfer process allow for the theft of private group email lists by someone creating a 'ghost' group and doing a transfer request at the same time that the real group owner is doing a transfer request ? I.E. My group makes transfer@groups.io a moderator and someone ELSE sends a transfer request OF OUR GROUP... won't you be sending our mailing list to their groups.io group....

This seems to only happen when sorting by NameYou're right...that is peculiar. What I'm seeing is that only "sort by posted" actually works for the Emailed Photos folder. If you sort by anything else, the thumbnails are moved around but the underlying links are not. Seems to work fine in other albums. Bruce

Suggestion for Importing Groups
Mark,
I am not a tech person, but it seems this might be a good idea to move groups faster and in a way that is more fair. Small groups are having to wait too long because of monster groups taking so.long to import. My suggestion is to separate the queues into 3 categories small groups, medium groups (over 500 members) and large monster groups. Separate machines and staff can be dedicated to each.category. If possible have some of your machines dedicated to importing just the small groups. They will moved faster and will soon be off the bucket list because of their smaller size. Then you can concentrate those freed up machines on moving the medium sized groups. This should speed up the process. At least it would be more fair! Waiting on.monster groups to be imported is not fair because of the extra time they are monopolizing for imports. Those who have a monster group, you may not like this, but it will also move them forward in their queue. And get them closer to the finish.line. Small active groups that are normally very active every day are hurting because we are stymied and cannot function until the transfer is complete. It matters more with smaller groups. Our membership is of a different make up, more hands on and group oriented.. The nature of the groups necessitates staying actively involved. Thanks for considering the idea. I do not know if you can do this, but I had to ask.😄 Janis

I just followed your link and clicked the Register button, registered and read the whole article. This is not a free trial. You can read 1 article a week free. Check it out! It’s a good article but too long to summarize well. Susan B

Re: categorisation
In addition to @drew's excellent suggestion for a keyword section in the group description I would also like to propose that group owners include a Hashtag section in their group descriptions with as many (or few) tags as they feel are helpful in identifying the groups areas of interest (e.g. #politics #UK #BRexit)
This would be immediately usable via the find group search but, in time, I would hope that groups.io would add a find group by hashtag function similar to the find message by #hashtags function that we already have within groups and show how many groups there are for each tag and allow filtering of the group list as tags are selected. I hope this would address the OP's aims, be more flexible and be consistent with the use of hashtags for categorization across the web -- Bob

Re: 2 questions about the Yahoo Group transfer
Harm Selling <h.selling@...>
Assuming a part of the "no mail" members are bouncing without knowing it, I've decided to approach all these members by e-mail, outside of the group. It appears that: - a part of these members appears to bounce. I remove these bouncing members from the group. - Some of these members reply: "I'd like to stay in the group and want to receive again the group mail". I change the status of these members in "single mail". - Most of the members are not responding at all. I'll wait two weeks and, if still no response, remove them.
My Yahoo group had 1275 members, but 400 members were already bouncing in the Yahoo period and were not imported by Groups.io.
It takes a lot of time, but it's useful to clean up the group.

You need a subscription to read the full article, perhaps if someone has access, they could let us know a bit more about what Shal says (though at least I now know how old he is). HTH Helen
