I agree with this, and also very much want the option of a daily digest containing all of that day's messages.  Right now there is the option of a daily summary (containing the subjects but not the message texts), and of a daily digest of up to 12 messages (so if there are 30 messages on a busy day, I get 3 emails when I want ONE email with all 30 messages).  Weekly and monthly summaries sound good too.  Email is an attention sink so it is important to be able to control the frequency of its arrival.  I located this thread by searching whether anyone had already asked for a daily digest, before requesting it myself.

Yes, the subject line is also problematic, at least on my iPhone. On the laptop, I can see immediately who sent the message from the subject line. But on the phone, all I see is "Message approval needed," which is less than helpful. (See, I avoided hyperbole!!!:-)

I wonder if "Approval needed" ought to be first in the subject line.  After all, that is what the email message is telling me.

(Yes I know I'm deviating from what you were asking about.  But when I see the subject line, first and foremost it has to tell me WHAT it's about, and then fill in the details.  For me, the fact that a sender sent a message is immaterial, even the group name is not important, until I know WHY groups.io is telling me this.)

I too have had issues with Drafts.

Whilst composing an update to a member this afternoon, I needed to check something elsewhere - within one of our Databases and, having copied it, returned to the Draft but although I could see and click it, I couldn’t paste the copied text into it and it would not send.  Sadly, I deleted it.

It must be a bug that needs squashing pdq!

moderated Shorten pending-message notification email, put sender name at the top #suggestion

The pending-message notification email currently reads
"A message was sent to the group [group web address] from [sender] that needs to be approved."

I previously sent a suggestion to add the reason for the needed approval. I am now also suggesting that the message be changed to put the sender name closer to the top of the message body, and to shorten the message by using the group name instead of the complete web address, so that the sender can be seen more quickly, without having to open the message. Currently, if perusing the notifications on my phone, I see everything BUT the sender's name unless I open the message.

My suggestion is to change the message to read "[sender] sent a message to [group name - not complete web address] needing approval because [reason - e.g., the user is moderated, the topic is moderated].

I wonder if something else is doing this, not groups.io.  I say that because I have never seen a delay when editing an existing message (but I have only rarely edited pending messages to maybe it's unique to just that).

One place where I do see an annoying delay, is when Replying to a message, from the web.  75% of the time, the edit window comes right up; but for the other 25%, I see the Subject line and Format line and the Reply and Discard buttons, but no box below the Format line.  And I wait and wait for it to appear -- which it usually does, if I wait long enough.  IIRC, there is no spinning wheel when this happens.  But this is not consistent either, so maybe it's unrelated to what you're seeing.

p.s. In case nobody else has noticed this, I wanted to mention that I have Sophos running. After sending the above message, I went into the Sophos control panel and explicitly white-listed groups.io as a website, but that didn't make any difference. It's possible there's something else I need to do in there. If nobody else here notices the sluggishness, I can contact Sophos tech support and ask about this. But I don't notice it with any other sites, including ones that I "do" things on  (like craigslist, for example). Maybe somebody here has some insights, especially vis-a-vis the possibility of Sophos slowing things down, in case it's not happening to anybody else.

moderated sluggish groups.io processes, especially editing pending message #misc

I've noticed recently that some groups.io processes are sluggish. It's not my computer (new computer is lightening fast) or my connection (all other sites load without delay). Things seem slightly sluggish here in general lately, but one process that stands out in particular, and is fairly (or completely) consistent, is editing a pending message. I'm often sitting there drumming on the table while the little wheel spins and spins until the edit screen finally comes up. I think this has been happening for about the past month. Other processes sometimes seem delayed as well, but I can't point to a pattern except for that one.

Andy-

Thank you!  That works fine for us (we don't send any other Calendar reminders.)

I really appreciate the help.  Best regards.

I've just done a test and can replicate what you say. If you set the Special attribute on the #cal-reminder hashtag the reminder will go out as a special message. You may not want that for all reminders though.  You can moderate the hashtag to make sure the reminders are going out as you wish. Not a fix but perhaps a workaround in the short term.

moderated Calendar not sending Special Notices #bug

Jim F.

Our group has meetings twice a month (2nd & 4th Saturdays).  The Calendar is set to send out Special Notice reminders 5 days and 5 hours ahead of each meeting.  But it has started sending the reminders as regular notices that go only to those who are subscribed to get all email posts, not to all members who are subscribed to get Special Notices.  The 'Send as a Special Notice' box is checked for both Calendar reminders.  I tried deleting the Calendar events and setting up new ones, but it didn't help: today's notice went out as a regular notice, so I had to resend it manually as a Special Notice (which worked).  The last Calendar-generated Special Notice was sent 5/22, and the first Calendar-generated regular post was sent 6/07.  Was there an update in that period, or is there something I can do to get the automatic Special Notices working again?  Thanks and best regards.  -Jim F.

moderated add log search criteria "via web" and "via email" #suggestion

It would be helpful to have the ability to filter activity log entries according to "via web" and "via email" as a new search criterion. That would allow moderators to gauge how many, and which, members are using the web vs. email.

Hi Mark,

we currently have the options to email all responders, all attending and all waitlisted etc. but it would be really useful to be able to email selected responders, just as we email selected members from the member list.

moderated A privacy setting loophole with subgrups #misc

Bart Fried

Hi Mark,

My group is set for Members List Visibility -> Owners Only. Subgroups permissions in the Features Settings was set for Permissions -> Members. This led to one issue and one seemingly glaring privacy loophole.

First, the loophole: A regular member (not a moderator or owner) told me that she had added two other regular members to a subgroup. I thought that it was impossible, but she showed me how she did it. Simply by selecting the Subgroups option in the main menu, she saw a screen that listed three options: Members; +Create Subgroup; Categories. She clicked on Members and the entire membership list appeared with the options to add them to subgroups. She did not click on +Create Subgroup first, nor was she a moderator or owner of any subgroups. Thus, if the Permissions is set for any Member to be able to create a Subgroup, then any member in the entire group can override the group privacy setting and can now see the entire members list. I see this as a violation of the members' privacy. And what is worse, any member, even if not in any subgroup, can check off boxes for any other member in the entire group and then Update (showing at the bottom in the usual spot) them. Without their permission or their prior knowledge. Basically, a Direct Add. If you are aware of this, it is surprising that this exists, but perhaps there is a reason I'm not understanding.

This leads to the issue that I have had to change the Subgroups creation permission to Moderators & Owners Only. That does solve the privacy problem by closing the loophole, but it denies us the opportunity to have our members create their own subgroups. What we believe is a good option would be for a member to be able to create a subgroup, and to Moderate it, but not have access to the general membership list. To populate their group, they can easily post a notification, and the subgroup can be visible in the list of subgroups if desired. Anyone who wants to join it can subscribe to it. But overall privacy is maintained. Of course, Moderators of the subgroup should be able to see the subgroup Directory.

Thanks,

I just retested and the member received the Welcome (Member Notice) message so all looks good now.

I have some queries about notifications when a member leaves a subgroup and will raise those separately when I have completed testing.

Thanks.
