Would it be reasonable - or greedy - to put in for a second transfer, this time for messages only, in hopes of scooping up some of the missing ~7000 messages from our archive? I don't want to gum up the works for others who are waiting.

I've seen comments in these forums chastising Yahoo Group owners for not seeing how the wind was blowing years earlier. For sure, we saw the hellish dysfunction but were not aware of an alternative. I agree that the crisis is close to over. However, the suggestion remains to cover any future moves be it one a week or a thousand. It would take an hour or two to set this in place and the benefits would always be there.

This is the beta group is it not?

Well, given that there are only a couple of days left, it isn't feasible. And you would need to suggest this to Beta group that Mark monitors.

But if people treated the process like a project, and followed each step, it might go easier. That being said, there is the spanner in the works - YG's acting up!

I would print out the instructions and tick off each one as they are completed. Go carefully, step by step. Read everything!

As regards PGO-2-GIO it is my understanding that, for clearly obvious reasons, this will not go live until the Dec 14th YG cutoff OR it becomes impossible to move a group from YG to groups.io using the existing transfer facility provided by groups.io.

I'm curious to see if I ever get anything. I requested the contents of the
groups I belonged to, including one group that Yahoo later said didn't
exist. Anymore, I'm convinced Yahoo could screw up an anvil.

Then again, pessimists get a lot of nice surprises. We'll see!
I was a little surprised that I did get the files. The first file was 947 Mb and the second was 1.8 GB. Most frustrating was the fact there was no record of the group that Yahoo now insists didn't exist.

Does anyone have recommendations for an MBOX reader?

Mark, you rock, you totally rock!

We transferred our groups a while back (thank you!), and love groups.io.  I told a whole lot of yahoo group folks about groups.io, and some of them did/are transferring their groups (some of them yelled at me, as others have noted).

You have gone beyond multiple times!  After all the ikk and mess at YG, it's so fine to see someone running a groups platform who obviously truly cares about the ability of people to have a well-functioning platform for groups.

Thank you!  you rock!  Gesine (here since egroups days)

To be totally clear:

This means you have to GIVE THE GO-AHEAD for your transfer (complete Step 5) by this deadline. Simply initiating a transfer, or paying for Premium Yearly, or completing any of those other preliminary steps will not ensure you a spot in the transfer queue.

Do not procrastinate...get started on this NOW, so the delays involved in inviting the transfer agent and making it a Moderator do not come into play.

Those who have paid but are not able to execute an Easy Group Transfer will issued a refund upon request. Just email Mark at support@groups.io and he will refund your money and delete your group.

Mark,

Thank you for your persistence in dealing with Yahoo's maddening failures and inconsistent performance.  My family group transfer went through yesterday less than an hour after I hit the "proceed" button.  I'm so grateful to you for all your hard work.

best regards,
Katie

Mark, I'd send you flowers if I knew how! THANK YOU.

For anyone else who's starting this process: I had to try about a dozen times before I got Yahoo to send an invitation to the groups.io address. If you get a failure message on the invite page, keep trying.

I'm almost weeping with gratitude, and it's not just relief to have this sorted. I feel like I've found a group of people who embody what the Internet was like in those early days - a spirit of sharing, generosity, competence, and curiosity.

This is a manifestation of Yahoo's latest issues. My changes yesterday to our crawler mostly work around this, and I'm seeing very few unretrievable messages since the changes went into effect yesterday. Basically, I'm hammering Yahoo's servers; I massively parallelized the crawler and also if it gets a failure, it retries a lot more times than before, in rapid succession. These are admittedly hostile behaviors, and if I was running Yahoo's servers, I'd not be pleased. But it seems to do the trick.

Exactly right, and diplomatically said. I moved my group four years ago and have never looked back. Around then, some other yahoo group owners I was trying to help move were dissing me for pointing out yahoo's obvious and increasing failures. It's been very hard to bite my tongue and not express my utter shock that anyone now actually has notion to blame *Mark*, who is the one *rescuing* them from the the yahoo mess, for their predicament in not having moved when the going was good. He has gone above and beyond, and is now doing so again.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Have a fix for it? Clearly it’s (deep breath) a YAHOO ISSUE. Gah.

Does this indicate permanent failure?

Grateful for all counsel,
