Wow, I just squeaked in this morning by getting in a transfer request for my family group - 20 years of messages my sister described as a "big box of letters," including many from my father and my uncle who have since passed away.

Mark, thank you for everything you've been doing and continue to do to save so many of these longtime groups so important to so many of us.

best regards,
Katie

moderated Another Yahoo Groups outage

Hi All,

Once again, I've had to disable new transfer requests. Yahoo is erroring out for the vast majority of our requests. I'll update if/when this changes.

Thanks,
Mark

I hadthe same problem with invites. I was able to refresh the page and then the invite worked.  I had to use the same solution when I set transfer@groups.io moderator.

Maria,

A common solution is to change your old yahoo group to 100% moderated. Then, if anyone writes to the old group, you can gently remind them that the group has moved to groups.io.

That's Great, hopefully it stays fixed! 😀 I am assuming that my "Easy Yahoo Group Transfer Setup" for the sites submitted says "We've received the invite to your group and will accept it soon. There is no need to send another invite." and heard nothing else is because you are dealing with a backlog? I am sure your fully overloaded, so don't mean to pester you, I'm asking just to make sure I don't need to do anything else, but wait for your response, and for those who are wondering the same thing! 😀

Thanks

moderated Yahoo transfers are working again

Hi All,

It appears that whatever was ailing Yahoo has been (mostly) fixed, and I'm able to complete group transfers again. I've re-enabled new transfer requests. Fingers crossed Yahoo stays up for awhile.

Needless to say, if you're thinking of transferring your group, I'd seize the moment.

Thanks,
Mark

My group members and I trying to move attachments from Yahoo are experiencing the same time outs and pages hung up taking forever to load.  Luckily I already have them downloaded but I need to access the attachment archives to get email message numbers and see who sent what file or photo attachment.sage

I decided I can find them quicker in my old emails!

Sometimes when I would click.a link it would go to.the sign out page, but I would hit the back button and continue still.signed in.  Good luck!

And Happy Thanksgiving!

Another way:

When inviting groups.io, check mark the box for the option to add to email list only.
Groups.io will be sent an invite to accept.  Change the new member, Groups.io mail delivery to no email  and promote to moderator.

This should work to give Mark access.  But Yahoo is erroring out, and unbelievably slow this week. It kept dragging its feet between pages yesterday and would time out and show the sign in page.  I would hit the back button and was still.signed in and continued.  See the transfer request page!

The instructions say to upgrade first, then invite.  Doing things out of order is not a good start.  Detailed instructions can be found at https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/message/24431

I hope that, by the end of the week, I'll have all the messages in both raw and HTML format as JSON files along with the message metadata (also JSON). The members list is also in JSON, as is the metadata for the files and images.

If I manage to get everything will it be possible to transfer it to Groups.io? Or do I need to get the messages into mbox format? Happy to pay for premium membership for the two groups concerned.

The messages would have to be in mbox format (specifically mboxrd as referenced by the wikipedia entry). But I'd need to see what the messages look like before saying whether they could be imported, because I'd need to see if the full headers were downloaded, and if the character encoding was done correctly. Preferably, Yahoo gets its act together and fixes their message issue before December 14 so that we can do normal group exports.

Thanks,
Mark

If it helps at all, Simon, I did a test earlier today to invite a new member to one of my old Yahoo groups, then promote that person to moderator. I did this experiment only to see why so many Yahoo group owners are having issues at present; I concede that their services are extremely flaky at present and maybe I was lucky in completing the following:

At first, I tried sending the invite logged into my Yahoo group on my Windows 10 PC; the first snag was I couldn't send the invitation as all I got were errors — I was using username@.... Then I tried the strategy that I used in the past when inviting transfer@groups.io which is: GIO Transfer <transfer@groups.io> and this was accepted on first attempt. Which format have you been trying?

Following receipt of the invitation I found it necessary to create a new Yahoo account for username@... which I did on my Mac (in order to stay logged in on my PC). I was able to setup a new account using that non-Yahoo address and then I tried to register with my Yahoo Group. It wouldn't complete using Firefox; it wouldn't complete using Safari! In the end, I tried registering on my PC using Firefox and it worked first attempt!

I hope this may be of use to other struggling owner/admins ...

Roger

Hi,

I’m having problems inviting transfer@groups.io to my Yahoogroups – I’ve tried repeatedly over several days, but it throws up an error each time.  Are others having issues with this?

Morning All

@Mark - is this issue likely to be affecting all facets of Yahoo!Groups data access? Like Janis I've successfully transferred by most critical (largest/most active) group, however I have about 5 others that have had no meaningful activity for a couple of years (or more in some cases) so I haven't bothered transferring them. Instead I am using the PG Offline app to download all the files, photos, member detail and posts - and I have found this erratic over the weekend, in some cases reporting there are no files or photos to download when I know there are and it has done it successfully for other groups. The app works fine so I have been suspecting some transient issue on the Yahoo! side, and your post seems to confirm this.

bschwerer@...

Our group was having this issue.  The original owner who was not involved upgraded the moderator to owner, but some permissions were left unset.  Eventually the original owner got around to enabling "invite" permissions to the moderator and they were able to invite.  She had several timeouts on links though.  The transfer agent still hasn't joined yet.  And we still need to upgrade to premium to get the transfer if the issues clear up
