moderated Feature Request for Yahoo Group Transfers #suggestion

Jon Matcho

I understand these were announced to be no longer accepted earlier this week, but hear me out...

I am a member of a group that I was unable to convince of the urgency to get their Yahoo group transferred over to hear.  They have a placeholder free group setup, but not yet operational.  They decided at their last meeting (that I was unable to make), that "we'll revisit this in January 2020".  I was able to download all files, photos, links, etc. from the Yahoo group, but messages are the issue now.

Why not support Yahoo Group transfers only for Members and Messages after the 12/14/2019 date?  Others may come to realize they're in the same boat as well.

Thanks,
Jon

I think that's available.  All you have to do is upgraded to Enterprise - "Fully customizable home page".  I'd think it would apply to other pages of your group as well.

I wouldn't want much, if any, color change allowed to each group.  It would be very confusing to tell someone to click on the blue button if their group uses green buttons, etc.

I understand it's not hanging fire at the moment, but I'd like to advocate for that feature in future.

I am also in favor of this. I find sometimes topics tend to stray so I would like ot move topics from let's say the main grop to a general chat group and hav ea notice that is emailed to the main group letting them know it's ben moved and how they can subscribe.

If the information is public (can be read by anyone without logging in), Google will eventually find it.  Doing a Google search for groups.io returned ~166,000,000 hits, though not all from the site.

I thought it was Dec 14:
The archives should be on YG until Dec 14, but Mark has set a cutoff of Dec 5 @ 9am Pacific time for requesting transfers.  He may continue to try existing transfers after the cutoff if they haven't been completed.

moderated How to index a Group@groups.io on Google Search?

Homayon Reinhardt Chaudhry

Hello Group

First the good news: Our list was successfully transfered from the yahoo server to groups.io!

But…it has never been indexed by google. When trying to register it manually, Google would return an HTML-verification code to be uploaded and/or integrated into Wiki's head section. The code looks like that: <meta name="google-site-verification" content="p7Xn [her comes a long list with numbers and letters]" />.

Well I tried to insert the meta into the source-code of wiki, so that didn't work and finally there seems to be no way to upload google-html-files to Wiki.

When I asked the question some time back in Groups_Help. Shal suggested the "...wiki (and message) editor strips many HTML tags…to exclude HTML constructs that may be exploited by scammers…”. It should be something to be asked in beta as a suggestion that it’ll be permitted.

So here I am. Please advise and thx a lot.

Hi Mark,

Thanks so much for continuing to let several of us who were frustrated by the Yahoo glitches continue with the process!

On top of everything else my laptop pc was giving up the ghost so yesterday I had to make the 6 hour round trip drive to Albuquerque to spend more hours trying out dozens of laptops before I found one that will work for my needs; then today getting it at least partially up and running.  At this point I am at step 4 in the transfer process!

By the way, on another subject I saw somewhere that you were a pilot or otherwise interested in aviation at some point.  You might be interested to know that I am very involved with many nonprofit pilot and aviation groups, such as volunteer pilot patient transport groups like Angel Flight, LifeLine Pilots, Pilots for Patients, and many more; and other groups providing introductory flights for kids, supporting conservation and environmental support efforts, transporting veterans around to their care facilities, etc. etc.  There are tens of thousands of volunteer pilots in more than 70 such groups doing wonderful work

The umbrella nonprofit support group for them is called the Air Care Alliance www.aircarealliance.org and we are about to roll out our redesigned website and online automated referral system.  I have been considering setting up a discussion group that interfaces well with the site.  After we get through this current situation I will be investigating if groups.io might be just the vehicle for that part of our operations!

Again, thank you - believe me I know how much dedication and hard work it takes to make good things happen!

[ hoping my programmed signature works . . .]

I thought it was Dec 14:

https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/17/20919593/yahoo-groups-new-content-upload-deadline-extra-week

"However, no matter when you post something to a group, it’s still
going to get deleted, as Yahoo is still removing all content hosted on
Groups on December 14th."

Did they change the cutoff or was the reporting in that article
incorrect? I've read that in multiple places but that doesn't mean
those sources are correct, but they are usually so.

In either case it won't affect me as I have my groups archived. I just
want to be sure so I can run my archiver at the last minute to get
whatever the last "recorded" posts are.

I agree that the crisis is close to over. However, the suggestion remains to cover any future moves be it one a week or a thousand. It would take an hour or two to set this in place and the benefits would always be there.
If this weren't so close to the deadline the two hours you say it
would take to implement this change might be feasible. Right now Mark
is working night and day with little sleep to get as many groups
transferred. He will run out of time at some point. He has limited
resources and right now the most limited resource is time.

To spend the two hours now might mean several groups will not get
transferred because he spent his time on doing that instead of
transfers. I think there's already enough information available for
people to follow the directions to get their transfer done.

If there is indeed benefit of having that information after Dec 14
(you said there would be some benefits in the future in it "always"
being there, I just don't understand how it would be useful after Dec
14), I'm sure your suggestion could be considered then. Suggesting it
now just means it will be lost in the commotion that's going on right
now. To expect it to be implemented now would mean some transfers
would be sacrificed just to do this.

I think Mark is going to take this transfer stuff right up to the last
possible minute. He will probably continue after Dec 14 as long as he
has group content downloaded already (before it disappears from Yahoo)
so he has something to transfer. Then he will run out of content and
will have to just say he did his best and the rest just didn't make it
in time.

You are in the right group to make the suggestion though. Just come
back after the Dec 14 Yahoo cutoff date and suggest it then with an
explanation of how it will be useful in the future. No sense in making
a case for it now as it will have to be ignored during this crisis.
Mark has already stated that he will not be spending time implementing
suggestions until after the transfers are all completed.

I have a similar issue.  The Owner can’t log in as the owner any more, and the back up moderator wasn’t granted the privs to turn anyone else into a moderator!

Hi BG,

I don't see a way to have archives/old messages hidden from members.  Is that possible?  I moderate a support group for divorcing moms and encourage people to post fairly deeply, and ask for support on sensitive topics.  It's nice for them to feel like their kids, or their stalk-y ex can't somehow search for those messages

Thanks,
Charlotte
