Search option for subject and/or body

A search reveals messages where the word is used in the subject or the body. Allow the option to search for key words in the subject only also.

If you lock a topic, and the topic has a hashtag, and then you click on that hashtag anywhere, the topic appears in the hashtag search but the lock icon does not appear. I just went through re-locking a bunch of topics that I thought I'd already locked, and it turned out that I HAD already locked them. It's just that when looking for them by clicking on any hashtag they have, the locked icon had disappeared.

Shal, I don't mean anything negative by this. I am just done with it, is all. I simply wanted to point out that it is not a simple thing. I am not interested in designing the fix.

Shal,

J,
All depends what you mean by “nearly instantaneous.”I explained exactly what I meant, in some detail. And yes, in my case and in my group, and no doubt in others, there areWould this work for you? In those cases where, upon reading the "Message Approval Needed" notice, you begin a non-instantaneous process (that is, you do something other than immediately accept or reject) you could step through to the Pending list on site and claim that message. Or, maybe part of this suggestion (or a separate #suggestion) should be to add a "Claim this message" link to the Message Approval Needed notice, akin to the existing Reject and Delete links. That would cover the case of moderators who can't or don't want to go on site. Now your process can proceed in a protected fashion. Which, I think, is what you have asked for - a means to avoid investing time in a response only to have the message disappear (be accepted/rejected by someone else) in the meantime. You can’t wish the problem away. No, but I can suggest means to minimize the problem (other than by investing the site with the clairvoyance to know that you're considering a message off line). Shal

I skimmed back through this topic because I thought someone had already suggested it, but if so I missed it - my apologies. I'm leaning a bit more to the general case of "sent" as an on site way to provide the equivalent function of an email "sent" folder. But that's a rich enough suggestion in itself that it probably deserves its own #suggestion topic (and there may be that suggestion in beta's history already, I didn't search that out but it sounds familiar). All depends what you mean by “nearly instantaneous.” If it’s not “instantaneous enough,” you have a problem, and an ugly, messy one. And yes, in my case and in my group, and no doubt in others, there are times when it is in no way instantaneous. You can’t wish the problem away. My two cents.

J,
*However,* I'm not sure about the logistics of blocking approval andBoth accepting and rejecting by email are nearly instantaneous events: you click Reply or Forward and Send - there is no time spent in an edit session. Now you may have spent some time thinking about the message before taking action, but there's really no way to handle that: no signal from you to say "I'm thinking about this pending notice in my inbox". So unless I'm missing something, the basic problem still remains ifI really don't see it as a problem. But that may just be my style being different than yours. If I approve or reject by email it is usually because the decision for that message was instantly obvious to me. When a message needs consideration I tend to click through to the site to deal with it. If I'm lucky I remember to claim it before beginning to compose a message to the member, another moderator, or a rejection notice. If the message needs some trimming, redaction, or a mod note that edit has to be done on site anyway (and is the one action that currently does claim a pending message). Shal

We do run a hot standby, which also serves some queries. I'm trying to decide next steps, should a problem reappear, and one possibility is to switch over to the hot standby. That wouldn't be instantaneous, because I'd need to spin up a new hot standby before I brought the site back, because we don't currently have a 'gamma' as in your example. I may bring one up today. Something we do at work is to use database replication to form a chain of three database hosts: alpha-beta-gamma. If something goes wrong with the alpha host, we simply take it offline, promote the beta to alpha (e.g., change DNS, undo the read-only status of the beta), promote gamma to beta and then debug the old alpha offline and/or just make a new gamma. I realize that there is a cost involved to this that groups.io may or may not be able to sustain, but perhaps an alpha-beta model would work also. Best, Glenn --

Re: Emergency downtime

.... and we are back again. Daily summaries did not go out for the past 3 hours because the database query to get summary subscriptions was erroring out with an out of memory error from the database that indicated some kind of corruption on the database again. This was a different problem than the one I saw yesterday. Instead of just restarting the database, I restarted the entire machine this time. If this doesn't fix it, I will have to do something more serious. Again, it doesn't appear that there's any corruption or loss of data in the database; right now this appears to just be a machine issue. Thanks, Mark

Hi All, The database is misbehaving again. I need to restart the database machine to see if that fixes it. The site will be down for about 5-10 minutes, starting at 8:50am Pacific Time. Thanks, Mark

Re: removal followed by banning followed by unbanning wipes out Notes everywhere
#bug
Just adding that in the situation that caused me to discover this problem (which I have since reproduced through tests), the reason I unbanned the member was that banning caused the Display Name to reappear (as mentioned before in a previous thread), and I wanted it to remain blank, as with all other Past (not banned) members.

removal followed by banning followed by unbanning wipes out Notes everywhere
#bug
Previously, the fact that removal or banning wiped out the member's Notes in either the Past Members or the Banned list was only an inconvenience: all you had to do to access them was go to the other one in which they still existed and copy them over. (Note: originally the Notes were wiped out only in the Past Members list, which led me to the hack of banning the member if I wanted to see the Notes, because the Notes were accessible in the Banned list. Subsequent to that, a change was made that caused the opposite situation: Notes were no longer accessible in the Banned list, but only in the Past Members list; so to see the, that's where you had to go.)
Now, however, if you remove, then ban a member (for which you must use the email address), then change your mind and unban the email address, the Notes are permanently wiped out everywhere. This is more than an inconvenience. It's a problem. -- J Messages are the sole opinion of the author, especially the fishy ones.

Hi! Not exactly a bug, but the Google Drive Integration page at https://groups.io/g/<my-group>/subintegrations has the Dropbox logo but talks about a Google Drive integration. Should be a quick fix? PS. Just clicked on the button and seems this feature isn't even available --> even quicker fix just to remove it?

Add Comments to Photos of Other Members
#suggestion
JenniferEverSews
On my doll & sewing groups the most requested change from members during the past few year is being able to add Comments to other members' posted photos.
When introduced by y***o, how quickly became a boon to those groups. It was easier for busier members to keep up with the number of emails. It concentrated the message posts down to the most important ones by nearly eliminating those that said 'your photo is nice' & the obligatory 'thanks' replies. Also turned out to be good for future research projects by keeping others' notes available with the picture long after the posting date. No need to hunt for message posts. I respectfully thank you for the ability to make the suggestion & your consideration. Jennifer
