I had forgotten to mention Wanadoo.fr/Orange.fr. The postmaster page for them states that they have a concurrency limit of 2, which is what we're set at now. Email has been flowing to them for several days. Thanks, Mark

Site updates
#changelog
This is a different #changelog from normal. Most everything outlined below represents internal changes to the site. This likely won't make sense to most people, but I'm writing this all down so that I can remember it in the future. The one new thing that will affect people are the new FBL subscriptions, outlined below. I switched main database machines late last week because of a (minor) corruption issue. The new main database machine was running on the same type of hardware as the old machine, and I had tested it for several weeks beforehand. However, starting at the beginning of this week (we're busiest on Mondays), it was clear that for some reason the new database machine was not up to handling the load of the site. The site was crashing regularly, and I was getting paged in the middle of the night. It took me a few days to rule out other issues and come to the conclusion that it was a kernel issue. The new database machine was running an older Linux kernel, which normally shouldn't affect performance, but I believe in this case was. As part of my debugging process, I optimized many database access patterns, which will be great going forward. I have changed the Linux kernel on all database machines, and, combined with the other optimizations I did, I believe that the performance issues have been addressed. Hopefully. At the same time, email to Comcast, Cox and GoDaddy was being delayed. I was finally able to establish contact with both Comcast and Cox and got the throttling lifted. As part of that, Comcast asked that I subscribe to their FBL (Feed Back Loop) service. An FBL is how we get notified when someone marks an email of ours as spam. So we are now receiving spam reports from several more email providers, including Comcast, Cox, Fastmail, Mail.ru, and others. The other recommendation that Comcast had was that we reuse SMTP connections when sending email to them, something we were not doing. So I spent the time to implement that. As of now, email to Comcast and Cox is flowing again. Email to GoDaddy/Secureserver is still being throttled and I have not had any luck contacting them as of yet. Notes: 4/24/20:

I am confused by the terminology (or lack thereof) being used here.

I also use Drafts to keep some draft texts which are important to me. But these drafts are in my Apple Mail program, independent of Groups.io. Am I misinformed? WRB —

I would be glad to see drafts automatically purged. My drafts older than a day or so are just clutter to remember to delete. For what it's worth, I keep snips of text that I want to reuse in group messages organized in a OneNote notebook. There are many different ways you can devise to manage text that you reuse other than groups.io drafts.

Tony -- You can store them as a Member Notices of type "Note to Member." Unfortunately, at this time there is no convenient way to subsequently send that member notice to the entire group. You'll have to open two browser tabs and copy/paste from one to the other. In this context I'd like to have a pull-down menu in the New Topic dialog that would allow me to select a Note to Member and send it to everyone as a regular post. Available to Mods only, of course. For those, like Tony, that intentionally use them, an indication on the Your Groups page, https://groups.io/groups, might make folks more aware of them and reduce the numbers. Maybe a blue, boxed D in the Delivery column or next to the group name? I suspect there are some folks that don't even know they exist, especially those that use email most of the time. I would have no problem with the 2 week timeout though. Duane

Hallo Mark, Can you please suggest where else I could store draft emails, text formatting experiments, email boilerplate, etc?

Hi, Not on my groups, although I imagine someone may say they might be writing a message for distribution in the future and prefer to leave it as a draft. Cheers, Joseph

Agreed. Also, can we get an email notification of when someone likes something? I'd also like to try the app with VoiceOver. Could you PM me with app beta instructions and list information?

Hi Mark, Can this be configurable on per-group or subgroup basis? Cheers, Joseph

Hi All,
Currently, we do not automatically delete old drafts. I propose changing this to be in-line with our other deletion policies (ie unclaimed pending subs/messages), where we would delete drafts older than 2 weeks.
I checked and we have close to 600k drafts in the database, with the oldest dating back to March 10, 2016, which I'm guessing is the day I introduced the feature.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks, Mark

This is killing us. I myself have an earthlink address and messages are taking 12-24 hours to arrive lately. Might it be possible to at least prioritize messages to small mailing lists which would not generate as much traffic as a main list for an organization? We have a lot of groups for committees and such and it is important that those get through quickly. For the big main group, one can at least go to the groups.io website to view the messages, which show up immediately, but it is hard to continually scan a list of specialized groups to see if new messages have arrived.

Account anomaly?
#misc
While doing a test, in an attempt to resolve a question on GMF, I intentionally created an account using a non-existent email address, including setting a password. I immediately got the red bouncing message at the top of the screen, as expected. I didn't see any indication of Not Confirmed status, neither on that account, nor on the application to a group, just a blue B. The account was never confirmed. I then proceeded to merge it into an existing account to complete the test.
I then tried to join a restricted group using the same address (after it had been merged, thus creating another new account.) As far as I can tell, it never showed NC for status, going directly to blue B. I'll obviously never be able to confirm, nor unbounce, that account, so what happens to it? Does it sit in the system forever or will it be purged at some point? This would be the situation if someone mistyped their email address when joining their first group, without having a password. Is it still considered an account, with a system entry in the database, or is it in a pending queue? Thanks, Duane

Messages filter custom date range issue
#bug
Hi Mark,
on the Messages display, you can filter messages by custom date range. The date range selection allows a start date to be greater than the end date leading to zero search results. Regards, Andy

Change email command name for individual emails
#suggestion
Hi Mark,
the email command to get individual messages is <groupname>+single@groups.io (assuming no subgroups). The use of the word 'single' here now seems to be inconsistent with other references and on the Subscriptions page where the word 'individual' is used. Is there any reason why we can't have <groupname>+individual@... for the email command? The <groupname>+help@... response would need to be updated if so. I guess this is a follow on from a topic here on beta last year Regards, Andy

Email delivery issues
#update
Hi All, Recently some email service providers have been throttling emails from us. I'm happy to report that two of them, Comcast and Cox, have today raised their limits and email is flowing at a more normal rate (Cox will probably take a few hours to catch up). That leaves Orange.fr/Wanadoo.fr, GoDaddy, and Earthlink/Mindspring/Netcom. I haven't been able to contact anyone at those services. I'm investigating some technical changes to how we send email which might help with Orange.fr. Thanks, Mark
