When we put the message number in "Message #" at top of page to quickly go to a message it's not working - it doesn't go to that message,
Until a few days ago it always worked perfectly.

We use it a lot.

moderated #suggestion - member login / activity status #suggestion

There does not seem to be a way to know if a member has ever logged into the website.  Nor a way to know if they have setup a password.  Both would be useful to know.
I recognize that many will only lurk reading emails. But if I want to send a poll, responders have to login to answer the poll question - it would be nice to know how many members have ever seen the website.
I can imagine several fields:
Posted/replied via web
Posted/replied via email
Logged into website*
Set account password*
*hmmm - this is account level not group level, but should still be available via an export of a group's member.
Thanks

moderated Inadvertent email #admin

Hi All,

Well, that was dumb. I was testing out an email that I will be sending out shortly to some groups, and through a code screwup, I managed to send it out to many subscribers of this group. If you received an email with the subject that began Members Visible change for main@beta.groups.io, please ignore it.

Thanks, and embarassed. Mark

See screenshot attache.

I don't really care whether the "pending" count includes or excludes the "claimed" count.
I've been thinking about this a bit, and it would truly be useful sometimes.  If the "claimed" were included in the "pending", then it would be easy to tell if you need to do anything - if they're equal, you're caught up.  In addition, since there could never be a claimed without a pending, there could sometimes be one number and sometimes two, so another indicator of the overall status.

Not sure if I lost any mails but a couple we posted last night (around
2000z UK) took around 20 minutes before they were delivered.

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • INTERNAL: Cleaned up instances of the same hashtag appearing twice in the topic.
  • BUGFIX: If sending to an announcement subgroup where you are not a moderator but you are a moderator of the parent group, the message would bounce.
  • BUGFIX: When banning an existing member by entering their email address manually, we did not save their moderator notes, owner messages, etc. Now, it does the same thing as banning a member using the Actions dropdown when viewing the member list.
  • NEW: Added another Yahoo hard bounce error code.
  • INTERNAL: Rearchitected how we paginate through messages, to be more efficient with the database.
  • SYSADMIN: Removed the extra block storage needed during the Yahoo Groups migration.
  • MISC: Hired a technical writer to draft a Groups.io manual.
  • CHANGE: Removed Canny.io integration.
  • BUGFIX: The messages in the mbox file when exporting a group were not in ascending order, as required.
  • CHANGE: Optimized drafts database queries.
  • MISC: Hired a consulting firm to help with search issues, including member directory search and upgrading our existing cluster.
  • CHANGE: Reorganized the Beta group hashtag list. Established a new group charter.
  • NEW: In the Hashtags page, added an icon to indicate mods only hashtags.
  • INTERNAL: Added some database indices to speed up topic deletion.
  • INTERNAL: Optimized several search queries.

Have a good weekend everyone.

moderated Member list Search button not respecting blank search box, resulting in infinite display loop #bug

Christos G. Psarras

If one is in the Admin Member list pages, one can enter some text to search the member list. It may or may not return results, either case.  If they are done searching and go and delete the search text and click on Search again (or press Enter), the deleted text reappears, the URL parameters do not change, the page refreshes, and stays the same.  No matter how many times one clears the text, either by backspace, Del, or mouse context menu. the same thing will keep happening ad infinitum.  In order to reset the page, one has to either manually clear the URL parameters and refresh, go-back a few times, or go to some other page and come back.

Cheers,

moderated Email queue corruption #outage

Hi All,

During one of the normal site upgrades today (something I generally do 5-20 times a day), the database storing emails to be sent out became corrupted. This led to the loss of some emails that had not yet been successfully delivered. I don't know how many messages were lost; most, if not all of them, we had already attempted to send out at least once.

I don't recall this ever happening before. That said, I'm looking into ways to mitigate this should it happen again.

Thanks,
Mark

moderated Problem with sorting in Emailed Photos folder #bug #fixed

Bruce Bowman

Mark -- If you sort the Emailed Photos folder by anything other than Posting Date, the thumbnails are sorted correctly but the underlying links are not. This leads to confusion when you subsequently click on a thumbnail and a different image loads.

The problem does not appear to affect other photo albums, just Emailed Photos.

Thanks,
Bruce

I probably did not make it as clear as I should have.  First, I'm not asking for the width to change at all; and second, neither to ALWAYS be dynamically-changed up or down from what is now.

It can stay as it is now if the browser window height is smaller than the menu height (which it already does now if one resizes the browser to a small height smaller than the menu height) or if the available space/height left is under some set percentage.  In other words, behave the same as it is now, this would be the minimums, there would be no negative impact whatsoever to existing users, and the only time the menu height would change would be if the browser window height is so large in relation to the existing menu height (as when it happens now when using a PC with the typical larger screen/resolution of nowadays), in which case it would then dynamically enlarge the menu height to take up some certain percentage of the available real estate, I don't know, like 75% maybe.  For those who use smaller-height screens, nothing would really change (although they may get a few extra lines displayed possibly, depending), only those who are using larger screens would really get the taller menu benefit; and if they resize their browser window down, it would resize back down, and stop when it reaches the current minimums.

Cheers,
Christos

Please don't use a word like idiot in the future. It's not helpful.

I'm still trying to check on the date displayed in the Banned list. It's tricky because of all the various cases  - member, non-member, ban by entering email address, ban by selected action from dropdown. In the couple of cases I tried just now, it's correct.

I agree that this would be correct (i.e., consistent/expected) behavior, if there's an active Banned notice, and if this applies only to members and not non-members, which is what you are saying here. So sounds good.

Now, banning by entering an email address behaves the same way as the other banning: we keep their member notes, messages to moderators, join date, etc. Previously we did not.
Great. Thanks.

Hi All,

I just fixed an issue with banning by entering an email address (as opposed to selecting a member from the Members list and banning them using the Actions menu). Now, banning by entering an email address behaves the same way as the other banning: we keep their member notes, messages to moderators, join date, etc. Previously we did not.

I was unable to reproduce the issue of banning someone and them not appearing in the banned list. If that happens to you again, please contact me off-list with the following info: name of list, email address of person you tried to ban, and how you tried (entering their email address by hand, or by selecting them from the Members page).

Finally, I think a change should be made. Right now, when you enter an email address by hand to ban, we do not send out the Banned member notice. This is even the case when the person you are banning is a member of the group. I propose that, when you enter an email address by hand to ban, and that person is a member of the group, that the Banned member notice is sent out. This would mimic the behavior of banning someone by selecting them from the Members list.

Thanks, Mark

Yes, essentially the same problem. They won't show up, you ban them again, and then suddenly they show up, and with some inexplicable date.

Another problem I just had was it took me 3 tries to get the member I was trying to ban to show up on the ban list.

That bug goes along with this thread and is not the only problem related to banning:

"In addition, sometimes a banned member is described as "banned" in the Past Members list but does not even appear in the Banned list."
The date field in the banned list is also not the date they were banned, the Notes page is missing from the member record in the Banned list, and other problems.

I don't have the Past Members on my free group, but the ones I banned yesterday for the AOL weirdness are not showing in the banned list on one group (they are on another.)  The action does show in the Activity log.  I was double checking to make sure I hadn't banned a real member.
