Judy,

Mark, will replying in the reply box allow that reply to show at the top
of the message or do you at least have an option?
Mark mentioned copying the original message's text into the reply as quoted text. But I don't see that on the published todo list.

Mark,

I thought about having it automatically scroll a bit up to make sure the
reply box is in view, which I can do, but I'm not sure that's best.
I think scrolling it just enough to ensure that the screen changed somewhat would be helpful. Understanding that there's a danger of annoying the user by scrolling things they want to see off the other end, you wouldn't want to go too far with this.

Reason: early on there was a problem with Yahoo Neo where if a menu button was at the bottom of the screen the menu would open entirely off-screen. So the visual appearance was that the button had no effect whatsoever. Unless one happened to think of scrolling down. And just to double-down on the problem, the natural scrolling behavior as one moved from message to message put the row of action buttons for the next message right at the bottom of the screen. I wouldn't want the Reply to exhibit a similar usability fail.

Mark,

It's an artifact of HTML, where a return is treated as a paragraph
break.
That's not exactly HTML's fault.

I would think it is entirely up to the editor how it handles the Enter key. So, for example, the editor could tentatively insert a <br> with the first enter, then replace it with a </p><p> with the second enter. Or perhaps generally a </p><p> for each even number of enters plus a <br> for any odd remainder.

You can always switch to plaintext for your reply, if you're not going
to be including any formatting. Use the drop down selector at the bottom
right of the reply box to switch to plain text. At some point I'll make
that a preference you can set.
I'll like that.

Dan,

I'm pretty sure that letting us set a default for message view is on his list of things to do. If it will help you out, here is where to see Mark's To Do list. :)

Mark -
One more thing to mention that may already be on your list. If this is a duplication I apologize.

Will the Message View page on the individual group pages either remember what view was last used (Thread View, Message View, or Expanded Message View), or alternately, will we be able to select a default view for our own pages? As a group owner I like the Expanded Message view, but I can see where other members might like something different.

Ah, sorry, I wasn't grasping that it was two different things. But it does help that the owners and moderators can change mail delivery options for members, because that is something we often have to do when they can't figure out what they want, or it somehow gets changed to something else.

Thanks, Shal.

Yay! Thanks!

That's really nice, not having it jump up there to the top when we hit reply.

I know eventually, it will have auto-quote, but for now, the >> (text) << seem to be working ok. Copy, paste, and put it in between them. :)

locked Starting a new thread and reading the web page view

When starting a new thread, it looks like the default is now HTML. It would be helpful if groups would remember your preferences for that group. I also try to open "Post" in a new window so as to not lose where I'm at in Message View.

I've been reading Beta from the web page. I find it's easy to jump between Message View and Expanded Message View. There are a couple things I would offer as suggestions, and I'm not sure if some of these might not already be on your to do list.

1) Reading with the newest at the top, I have to continually scroll down to find the message number I'm on. The message number might be more useful at the top of the message.

2) When trying to go back to where I left off, I have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to go back a page, and if I need to go back more than one page, I have to scroll down again. Can the page selection box be at both the top and the bottom of the page?

3) When I start a thread as the group owner, it shows up as coming from my own member identity instead of as coming from the group owner. There are times I really do need make it very plain to readers that I've put on the Group Owner hat and it's something serious. Very seldom do these need to be Special Notices.

As I noted, these may already be on the list.

Wonderful! I just have to remember to click the Plain Text choice BEFORE I start typing, because if I do it in the middle, it adds all kinds of weird characters!

And yes, I would be thrilled if this could eventually be a defaulted option that I wouldn't have to change every time I reply. :)

This just gets better and better!

JohnF,

It's easier to understand that if you don't normally receive mail, but
there are a few types of message that you do want to receive in mail,
you Follow.
Precisely. You select "Following Only" and follow what you want.

In your choice of Individual or Digest (or Special Notices or No Email if you want to turn them off, say while you're on vacation).

If you normally receive mail, but there are a few types of messages that
you don't want, you Mute.
Precisely. You select "All Messages" and you mute what you don't want.

Same delivery options.

Frances,

But I really don't want to lose the possibility of First Message Only.
Easy.

Select "Following Only" then check "First Message Also". Then if you don't explicitly follow any threads or hashtags you'll get only the first message of every thread.

Brenda,

Give us simple options and advanced options.
That's what I'm trying to do.

Under simple options, use these concepts:

Individual messages
Daily Digest
Special Notices
No Mail
Got that, it isn't called "simple options", but those are the "Email Delivery" options on Mark's mock-up:
https://groups.io/static/newsubpage

If you adjust only that Option, leaving the other set to the default "All Messages", then you get the simple, Yahoo Groups-like behavior (assuming you don't mute any threads).

Under Advanced options:

The things you and Mark are describing about muted and followed stuff.
Exactly. Those are under "Message Selection".

The "Message Selection" options work subordinate to the "Email Delivery" options. Even if you use the Follow and Mute controls to limit the messages you receive, you receive them Individually, in a daily Digest, or not at all according to your Email Delivery selection.

Judy,

The date would not help people who read off and on all day long, so it would be the same date. I do fine with post numbers, like I said, that's how I always read my groups, but others are used to coming into a group and knowing what messages are "new."

Warning: That isn't always a link to the group.io group. In his case, yes, it is. But it's actually the link that you can add to your Groups description as a website link. In his case, it's his group. But if you check out mine:

https://groups.io/org/groupsio/MMsanctuary

Group Information

You'll see that the link is NOT to MMSanctuary, but to my Yahoo Crusade Blog. So you have to put in the link that you want to be there in that space in description of group. Understand?

Hope that helps!

Mark, I hate to keep referring to Yahoo Groups, but since that’s my only example…….. Maybe we are talking about two different things.

I view all of my messages in Outlook, but I click the ‘reply via web post’ option at the bottom of the message and actually reply on the group.  When I click Reply, I have the option to show history and I delete everything except the most recent message (to this specific message).  It allows me to reply at the top so when someone reads my reply, they see it first and don’t have to hunt for it further down in the message.

Since on the beta group, I am replying directly from Outlook, my reply is always at the top.  Note I have Outlook set to reply at the top.  I’m sure you are wondering why I do it one way in Yahoo and another here.  The reason I do is because I don’t have the options at the bottom of each message here in groups.io that I do in Yahoo Groups.

Also while I’m thinking about it, at some point will we have a cc and a bcc option in messages?  Also, would like to have an option to reply to sender only and not have it go to the group.

Thanks,

Are you referring to viewing a message thread, where the newer messages are at the bottom? You can re-sort it so that the newest messages are at the top, but clicking the little 1->9 arrow next to 'Date' in the top right of the page. Unfortunately, you'll have to do that for every thread right now, but it's on the todo list to have it remember your setting.

locked Re: Replying to messages

First I should explain I'm using Full Message View on the group page. For me, Reply just opened a reply below the link to reply and left the rest of the page. I think that's good. I like the plain text/html option, but wonder if the switch might be to the right of the "Reply" link to save space and make it faster to find.

I suppose the easiest way to add quoted text is just to copy and paste. I like to use the greater-than sign to show quoted text in plain text messages.

I'll see if there are any issues after I hit Send.

Okay, I'm absolutely thrilled with the Message Numbers, just have a few questions or suggestions.

First, I'm just as confused as Johnf is about the difference in the total number of posts and post #'s. I realize that it is probably because some posts have been deleted, but is there a way for the programming to keep the total what it would have been before they were deleted? If not, I can live with it, just wondered.

Second, is there a way to put somewhere with the post #, the total number of posts? It would be nice to know when I'm reading Post 1025 if there are 5 more to read or 50.

Third, I don't know if this was explained clearly enough when I first tried it, so I'll try it again. Is there a way to shift message #'s to be read smallest to largest even if it's flipped on a page? In other words, be able to change the direction the numbers go, but NOT be jumped to the beginning or the end. That would be awesome if it could be done.

Fourth, Is there a way to use RSS with this group?

And last but not least. Is there a way that we can mark posts "read" or not on the website, or that they could be a different color once we read them on the website, so that when we come back to the website, we know exactly where we left off to read next? I don't mind writing the number with a pencil on a pad, but I know others will.

Thanks,
Brenda
