moderated Update/Rest of the year

Hi All,

I have unmoderated the beta group again. Please keep the discussion focused on new features and not support requests.

With the great Yahoo Groups migration winding down, I can turn back to projects in process before that happened. My focus continues to be on the app. It is almost ready for testing and I will soon create a new subgroup for that. The first version will not have moderator features; it's just focused on normal users. I will also be getting back to work on notifications soon.

I am working this week (although at reduced capacity because of a cold), and then will be on holiday until January 6th. As usual, I'll be monitoring the site. But answers to support requests will be delayed. Due to support volume, I can only answer messages from mods/owners of premium groups at this time. I wish it wasn't so, but that's reality.

2019 was quite a year for Groups.io. 2020 is looking to be even better. Thanks for your support!

That said, I'm sure Mark is more than "done having to deal with Yahoo transfers and al the trouble that went with it. I'm just glad he was there when Yahoogroups wasn't there for it's users. For that I give Mark a LOT of credit and an happy to pay for a service I could also have had for free. And  will keep paying for as long as he supports his users has he has. It can't be an easy job and it is very much appreciated.

Ah, thanks Bill.  That was the part I was missing.  I had assumed the archives would be available after 12/14 and that part of the transfer process would still work.  Oh well.

Thanks everyone.

You can also set a color theme by the background color of the graphic that you use as a cover image. Remember, that doesn't have to be a photo. One can create an appropriately sized graphic in another program and then export it as a JPG to be used by groups.io .

Color preferences are very personal!

At one time I had several groups on YahooGropes [spelling intended] and I used different color themes to make it quick and easy to recognize which group I was administering.

Of course I tend to like bright colors, especially greens!  I almost lost a board member of one group over that on our website!

It would be nice to have different themes for display options. This blue is pretty boring for me.

I am happy with the current blue theme. If I remember correctly, there was quite a debate here on Beta about the look!

Each of my groups has a distinct cover photo and even an icon for mobile use and for the group feed. In other words, each group looks a little different.

J,
I agree about staying as far away as possible from Verizonhoo.
But al so, there's a lot of groupio-centric change requests queued up while the final Yahoo lifeboats where landing here and many of those change requests have merit.
We've been patient.  The last boat has (almost?) landed.
Lets move on more normal requests

I think this is a brilliant idea, but not that I think it should be implemented. I feel like groups.io should stay as far away from yahoo as possible after the current mess is over and done with. But that's  just my personal feeling!

moderated Features to use Groups.io as an online email archive for a Yahoo Group

Mark,

Hopefully you won't boot me for being a heretic, but a question in GMF a bit ago got me thinking about it, so I ran a test.
https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/29915856#25326

The original idea was to use an email integration as a way to receive a Y!Group's messages into a Groups.io group. For archive purposes, as Yahoo won't store them going forward.

Yes, I know, the obvious objection is "why not just get the members to subscribe to the Groups.io group, post there, and be done with Yahoo Groups".

Honestly, I don't have a very compelling answer to that. I'm imagining a Yahoo Group owner who doesn't want to disrupt his members (who are happy with an email-only list) by trying to get them all to move to a new service; yet wants an online-archive. Or maybe a group like Y!GMF whose subject matter is Yahoo-centric, and so it would feel a bit weird to host the discussion elsewhere. Quite possibly most groups that start this way would eventually take the step of having the members move to Groups.io anyway.

Pressing on ...

1) Provide a "shortened" version of the email integration address.

I found that I could not get Yahoo to accept the integration address via Invite or -subscribe. They apparently don't allow the "+" character in subscribed email addresses.

I'm not sure exactly how to keep it out of the namespace of group posting addresses. Yahoo does seem to allow ".", so perhaps it could be:
groupname.int[hash]@groups.io or maybe
int[hash]@groupname.groups.io

I worked around this by subscribing my test group's posting address to the Yahoo Group -- but not vice-versa! No chance of a message loop that way.

Besides, if the Yahoo Group's address were a member of the Groups.io group then all messages would have the display name of that member - an undesirable result as then it wouldn't be evident who the original poster was.

So a consequence of this workaround is that the Yahoo Group posts as a non-subscriber - which means always moderated. Workable, but also undesirable, hence the request for a shortened email integration address.

2) If the group's Hide Email Addresses In Archives option is set to Mask them, apply that also to Display Names on posted messages. Important: apply that always when viewed by a non-member (in a group with public messages).

Reason: the way Yahoo Groups mungs From addresses (for DMARC) puts the clear text of the sender's address into the Display Name part of the message's From field. Which (because it is a non-subscriber post) becomes the Display Name in the group's web pages. In most types of groups it would be undesirable to expose that on the group's web pages, and it would always be undesirable to expose that in publicly viewed messages.

3) Auto-strip the Yahoo Group's footer.

Apart from the obvious desire to remove clutter, the Y!G footer also has a clear-text of the posting member's address. At least this one is already subject to the Hide Email Addresses setting.

J_Cat, No. My understanding of the OP is that he got everything *Except* the messages.
" I was able to download all files, photos, links, etc. from the Yahoo group, but messages are the issue now."
I think OP is outta luck.

Yes but the OP downloaded all of his messages to somewhere else, where they are presumably safe from yahoo's pending destruction. ;) Not sure whether that will persuade Mark to find a way to upload them, though.

Mark,

Thanks so much for taking care of the last few of us who were still in the queue waiting for YahooGroups to function properly when the December 1 deadline occurred!

Our transfer seemed to work smoothly and I have already gotten many thanks from members who were very worried our treasure trove of archived messages, our other photos and files, and more important our forum to exchange stories and tips would all be lost forever.

This platform is far better than YahooGroups.  Again, thank you for making it available to so many organizations and other users!

Cheers,

The messages archive will not be available at Yahoo after the 14th:

https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups/SLN31010.html

Open the "What features will go away?" section, where it lists Conversations and Message History.

You should check the Group Managers Forum, where there are many suggestions on how to at least save your message archive before Yahoo discards it, with the possibility of being able to upload this to groups.io at some point.

According to Yahoo, the messages will only be available after Dec 14 if they're involved in someone's request for a backup.  See https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/message/25629

I understand these were announced to be no longer accepted earlier this week, but hear me out...

I am a member of a group that I was unable to convince of the urgency to get their Yahoo group transferred over to hear.  They have a placeholder free group setup, but not yet operational.  They decided at their last meeting (that I was unable to make), that "we'll revisit this in January 2020".  I was able to download all files, photos, links, etc. from the Yahoo group, but messages are the issue now.

Why not support Yahoo Group transfers only for Members and Messages after the 12/14/2019 date?  Others may come to realize they're in the same boat as well.

Thanks,
Jon
