Re: Markdown
Mark -
Something that used to work in Groups that some of our members used were the characters created by holding down ALT and typing the four digit number on the numeric keypad. I'm afraid I don't know what it's called. Back in the days of phototypesetting these were called Pi characters as I recall. Is this in any way related to markdown? An example is ALT+0169 giving a copyright symbol. Being able to use them again would be helpful, but we managed without them. Dano

Re: The case for social logins
I meant social logins as an additional feature - social logins only would be frustrating for many people.

David,
For your use, I would think a Wordpress/blog/Wiki type site would work best. It could contain a link to your group, but would always be available to the public. You could also have a link on your group home page pointing to the other site, if needed/wanted. Duane

That would also force those who do not want to be involved with Google, to have to be involved with Google.

Yes. And I'm not sure why Chris thinks that the database feature was removed from Yahoo Groups. It's still there, just badly broken, formatting skewed, and more. But it was not removed with NEO, just broken. That caused a lot of people to lose important data. Brenda

I second that. I have no desire to have to be on a social group such as those, to use this one. Brenda

No no, Yahoo Groups didn't drop the database feature. It has been there from the start and is still there. However, NEO broke it. Just correcting that. Brenda

Mark,
Yes, this has been bugging me ever since it happened. I'm not sureA bit of all of the above, no doubt. But I'd recommend happy that the problem was flushed out early on. And I'm happy to uphold my reputation as a bug whisperer. -- Shal

Well put. I consider the likes of Faceache to be as leaky as an old watering can. Robert. Sent from my BlackBerry 10 smartphone on the O2 network.
The problem with this is, what happens if your primary email account gets compromised and it's the one you're using for your "social signin" stuff? If you don't catch it, you just lost access to everything, and may very well have a hard time convincing other people that the person that insulted them using your social login somewhere wasn't you. As others have said, let it be an option, if Mark wants to implement it; don't replace real secure systems (password management applications and hardware) with the false security of a unified login. Mark, As long as you found and fixed the bug, it should be good. This is the sort of thing that the current Yahoo Groups team would never communicate with us on, and why we like hearing from you on things. Matthew Pitts

Or just a "content is not available" with a link to the Groups.io home page? Or just take you to the Groups.io home page? dg

David P. Dillard
I just learned that while my group is public, the wiki is not listed on group contents when accessed by anyone who is not logged in to my group as a member of my group. The option needs to be made available to group owners to make the Wiki public if so desired. I will only be able to use this tool if it is public.

Markdown
Good morning, Over the weekend, I had a few hours while the babies were napping, and wanted to do a small fun project. So I added Markdown support to the post/reply boxes, along with code syntax highlighting in the archives. Markdown, for those (most) who haven't heard of it, is like plain text, except that it lets you include some formatting with it. There are a lot of places online that explain what Markdown is better than I can, like http://whatismarkdown.com. I think it's much better for conversations than HTML messages, and yet neither Google Groups nor Y! Groups support it. And with Markdown, if you're including a bit of source code in your message, you can tag it and it'll display nicely (this is called code syntax highlighting). The nerds, like me, really like this (and multiple people have asked for this feature in Groups.io). Anyways, if you want to post using Markdown, you now can. If you don't, nothing's changed for you. (I'll be going through all the messages from this weekend over the next couple hours). Thanks! Mark

Site sign in
Does a sign in on Groups.io ever expire? I signed in when I first joined (12 days ago) and haven't had to since. On the other service I use, I stay signed in for 2 weeks unless I specifically sign out. (Unless I need to use owner/moderator privileges, then it asks for credentials every 4 hours. Way too often in my opinion.)
