locked Another observation - this time about trailing trash

As I noted previously, I've been reading and posting from the web site. To be honest it's refreshing to have it work and I can scroll through the posts as they come up and follow along while doing other things. However I've been noticing some things that have been a problem with groups for a long time. Most people simply don't bother to trim the trailing trash and there are people who simply quote every bit of a thread. (I don't mean to pick on anyone, but would offer #1324 as an example.) This has always been a problem for digest readers and by reading in Expanded Message View I'm getting that same overwhelming effect.

Is there a way to drop everything previous to the newest quoted text, unless the poster has edited the trailing string? There's really no reason for even including that if one views it in thread view. Providing some relief from this would make digest readers' experiences a lot more positive.

Just an observation. If one starts to post something and then changes their mind, the window should perhaps have a 'Cancel' button at the bottom next to 'Send' to take the user back.

Will you still make it where we can set the default text option for replies
Brenda, you need to scroll down just below the Reply box to find the HTML/Markdown/Plain text switch.
Personally I'd like to see it at the top of the Reply window, to the right of the HTML text style stuff, so it's easier to find.

Hi Mark,

A few questions that aren't bugs.

1. Is there any RSS support for this site?

2. Will you still make it where we can set the default text option for replies, or are we no longer going to get to choose a default, since you added Markdown? Is it just not done yet?

3. Will you consider allowing more customization of the Home Page down the line? (a question from a member of my group).

By the way, THANK YOU for fixing the Home Page photo ratio issue. All of my owls are finally NOT stretched or squished!

Mark,

A couple questions, not sure if they are bugs.

1. When I was replying on the interface in Beta, the message number box at the top would not always work whenever I was taken to my reply (i.e. the last post in the group.

2. I thought you said that you had fixed the Reply feature so that it would allow you to return to the post you just replied to, but if you did, I don't see it, or it isn't working. Is it a bug, or is it still pending?

Thanks,

Brenda

There is no "coming back" because they wouldn't be coming "back" to Yahoo, they would be moving "forward" to IO.

And I guarantee you, that if IO gets a database feature, they will come. It's been the one major thing we've been unable to find in any other alternative to Yahoo Groups.

We really appreciate you, and all the work you are doing to help us. I hope you know that. :)

Mark,

I'm not upset, I completely understand it was a bug. I'm just totally relieved that it wasn't something stupid that I did. Even though I'm married to a programmer, I'm still not super computer literate.

No worries, just glad I wasn't losing my mind. I only do one group at a time, ever, anywhere, and I was in Owlperch. Nice to know that was true...that I really did see number 42 jump to 1087 or so.

David,

The option needs to be made available to group owners to make the Wiki
public if so desired. I will only be able to use this tool if it is
public.
For a public Wiki I can recommend PBworks. I've been using it to host YahooGroupedia for several years now and it has worked beautifully. It may be because the subject matter is so limited in scope (Yahoo Groups) but I've had very little trouble with defacement by spammers - mostly SEO crooks dropping links - and all handled with a simple reversion followed by restricting that user name. The fact that I'm able to get email notification of any edits is a key factor in keeping on top of any inappropriate changes.

That said, I'm not suggesting that Groups.io groups shouldn't have an option to open the Wiki (or other features) to non-members. I can well imagine an intermediate access control setting that allows non-members to read the wiki but only members (or only moderators) to edit it. Or even allow non-members to edit the wiki so long as they have a Groups.io account (the latter is crucial so that a troublemaker can be banned). Completely anonymous writing would probably be a recipe for trouble.

Not me whatsoever. I own The Yahoo Crusade Blog on Wordpress, but I have almost no ability to handle it alone. I had to get editors and etc. I am not able to figure it out on my own, not even after buying a book to help me, called Wordpress For Dummies. If it weren't for my experts, I couldn't maintain it myself.

David wrote:>>One can easily build content on a Word document or its equivalent and simply paste this preformated content including hyperlinked text and color from the Word document or other source right into the Wiki and it works just fine.<<

Once again, I have no idea how to do that. And I don't have the kind of time I used to have in my life to explore how Wordpress and wiki works. But I know how to use a database, like many others, and that's what we need in order to be able to relocate many many Yahoo groups to IO.

I had to redo my group message bookmarks, is that because of what you did to change it from archives to messages?

No worries, just wanted to make sure I didn't do something dumb to mess them up.

On the group, I clicked the Setting button on the left
Correct.

When I scroll down it shows Moderated, Restricted, etc.
Pointless.

I then clicked Member Notices at the top and it shows a welcome
message
Correct.

But not just Welcome (when someone joins your group) but also tabs for:
Pending Subscription (restricted groups only), Goodbye (someone leaves your
group), and Banned (you ban someone).

The tabs are clearly shown in Trish's screen shots (Message #1243 & #1314).
"Welcome" is on the left of the row, "Banned" is on the right.

I clicked Update Notices at the bottom and it looks like I get
basically the same options as above.
That button saves the text you entered into the text entry box above the
button (and below the row of tabs).

I also clicked on all of the down arrows
I don't know what you mean by that.

I'm lost. I don't see any place where I can pick when pended, when
approve, when denied, etc. I'm sure it's there, but I can't find it.
I'm baffled that you're lost. You must be expecting to see something
different and not recognizing what's there.

Chris,

An interesting question - should there be some visual indication that
certain links are external services so that user's know they are going
off-site?
Absolutely. That's why I suggested that the icon for such integrations could be the same sort of stylized page and arrow that signifies going "off-site" on Wikipedia. But maybe that alone is too subtle.

Trish, I think I replied to you about this earlier today.  We have messages that need to go out for various reasons to a specific person for a specific reason.  This is not the weekly, monthly  messages.  We  send one out when a member joins and is pended.  That message asks for information to be returned.  Once I approve a member, then another message goes out welcoming them.  If I deny a pended request, another message goes out.   All of these are scheduled under various categories

Pending

Denied

Joined

These are shown in Yahoo groups Control Panel/Notifications.

Note: I just uploaded a file in the shaltest group and nowhere do I see where I can select a scheduled option such as Joined.

Judy,

Are you talking about the files that go out to pending members or are you talking about approving pending members?

These are Member Notices, which are files that get sent out to:

Welcome

Pending

Goodbye

Banned

All can be modified to suit your group's info/needs.

Thanks Trish, but I don’t think we are talking about the same thing.  If I am reading that page correctly, those settings are group settings (who can do what).  That’s not what I am talking about.

When we have a member join the group, they are pended.  Also at that time, a message is automatically sent to them under the Pended category requesting information.  Another options is a letter goes out to welcome them when they are approved, another if they are denied, etc.  These various messages do not go out to everyone nor do they go out weekly/monthly, etc.  Just the one time to that particular individual.

I don’t see anything like that when I click on the Setting option.

Duane, if it doesn't also provide a way to send an automatic message to a specific email address, when they are pended, actually join, leave group, denied, etc. that doesn't help those of us that use that feature in Yahoo Groups quite extensively.  Example:  When someone joins the selling group, they are pended and an email is automatically, sent asking for required information and ask that it be returned within a certain amount of time.  If we get it within that time and all of the information is there, I then approve them.  If I don't get it in that amount of time, I deny the request to join.

I really don't see how the calendar can do this type thing, since it isn't a recurring event and is directed to a specific email address for a specific reason.  The others are for information purposes only.
