We do run a hot standby, which also serves some queries. I'm trying to decide next steps, should a problem reappear, and one possibility is to switch over to the hot standby. That wouldn't be instantaneous, because I'd need to spin up a new hot standby before I brought the site back, because we don't currently have a 'gamma' as in your example. I may bring one up today.

If this doesn't fix it, I will have to do something more serious. Again, it doesn't appear that there's any corruption or loss of data in the database; right now this appears to just be a machine issue.

I realize that there is a cost involved to this that groups.io may or may not be able to sustain, but perhaps an alpha-beta model would work also.

Hi All,

The database is misbehaving again. I need to restart the database machine to see if that fixes it. The site will be down for about 5-10 minutes, starting at 8:50am Pacific Time.

Thanks, Mark

moderated Re: removal followed by banning followed by unbanning wipes out Notes everywhere #bug

Just adding that in the situation that caused me to discover this problem (which I have since reproduced through tests), the reason I unbanned the member was that banning caused the Display Name to reappear (as mentioned before in a previous thread), and I wanted it to remain blank, as with all other Past (not banned) members.

moderated removal followed by banning followed by unbanning wipes out Notes everywhere #bug

Previously, the fact that removal or banning wiped out the member's Notes in either the Past Members or the Banned list was only an inconvenience: all you had to do to access them was go to the other one in which they still existed and copy them over. (Note: originally the Notes were wiped out only in the Past Members list, which led me to the hack of banning the member if I wanted to see the Notes, because the Notes were accessible in the Banned list. Subsequent to that, a change was made that caused the opposite situation: Notes were no longer accessible in the Banned list, but only in the Past Members list; so to see the, that's where you had to go.)

Now, however, if you remove, then ban a member (for which you must use the email address), then change your mind and unban the email address, the Notes are permanently wiped out everywhere. This is more than an inconvenience. It's a problem.

Hi! Not exactly a bug, but the Google Drive Integration page at https://groups.io/g/<my-group>/subintegrations has the Dropbox logo but talks about a Google Drive integration. Should be a quick fix? PS. Just clicked on the button and seems this feature isn't even available --> even quicker fix just to remove it?

Not moderate at all

moderated Site updates #changelog

Changes to the site this week:

  • NEW: Member search now also searches moderator notes.
  • BUGFIX: In some cases when we do a reverse DNS lookup on the IP address of a server sending us email, the Go DNS library would return a server misbehaving error, which we treated the same as not having a reverse DNS record, causing us to reject the incoming message. In those cases, we now repeat the lookup using an alternate DNS library. Specifically, China Mobile email servers seem to suffer from this.
  • BUGFIX: For some queries, wiki search would return a blank second page.
  • BUGFIX: For search queries with URL encoded characters, we would not properly decode them correctly on the subsequent search pages.
  • API: Misc improvements to the documentation.
  • API: Added "bad_request": "no space" errors to /addphotos, /updatephoto and /addfiles endpoints.
  • CHANGE: Moderators now cannot change the role of Owners.
  • CHANGE: Moderators now cannot change the subscription options of Owners.
  • API: Added support for extended=true to the drafts API endpoints.
  • API: /updatemember can now return: "bad_request": "moderators cannot change role of owners" is returned if a non-owner attempts to change the mod_status field of an owner.
  • API: /updatemember can now return: "bad_request": "moderators cannot make members owners" is returned if a non-owner attempts to make a member an owner.
  • API: /updatemember can now return: "bad_request": "moderators cannot change owner subscription settings" is returned if a non-owner attempts to change an owner's subscription settings.

Have a good weekend everyone.

On my doll & sewing groups the most requested change from members during the past few year is being able to add Comments to other members' posted photos.

When introduced by y***o, how quickly became a boon to those groups.  It was easier for busier members to keep up with the number of emails.  It concentrated the message posts down to the most important ones by nearly eliminating those that said 'your photo is nice' & the obligatory 'thanks' replies.

Also turned out to be good for future research projects by keeping others' notes available with the picture long after the posting date.  No need to hunt for message posts.

I respectfully thank you for the ability to make the suggestion & your consideration.

Yes, this feature would be welcome & helpful for my groups as well.
Thank you Denise for posting it.  Thank you to Mark for considering the possibility.

In a perfect world, I would love to have it there but able to be hidden - and that toggle be "sticky", so that the moderator (or table owner) could toggle it as needed, but the last choice would hold until it was changed again.

I agree that this behavior is annoying, and retaining the existing query string upon page refresh doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to implement.

Also being able to delete a batch of say 10 photos at a time would be most helpful.
This might take a little more work. :-)

Shal once made a suggestion to the effect that there be a page that displays all group photos in table format and have them sortable by their metadata entries (owner/uploaded/taken/containing folder/etc), along with a row of checkboxes on the left and an Actions menu of some kind so bulk actions could easily be performed. I'm struggling to find that post now but I really thought it was a good idea at the time.

I like this idea, if made optional...perhaps as a new checkbox in the existing Notifications section of a Mod/Owner subscription.

It seems like an expedient way to achieve most of the goals of the long-awaited "notifications overhaul" without attempting to create a separate notification for each and every group activity (which could quickly get out of hand).

moderated Activity Log summary for owner/mods #suggestion

On GMF we've noticed recently that there have been a fair number of questions where the answer could be found by checking the Activity Log for the group.  How about another option under Notifications for owner/mods that would send a summary of the previous 24 hours (since last summary) of the Activity Log?  It wouldn't need to contain details, just a summary of what's happened, but might be a clue to check the details of the log.  It would only need to have a line for any actions that occurred, not for all possibilities (though that's a remote possibility.)  An example:

Activity Log summary for xyz group:

27 members "sent message"
12 messages were "approved"
2 messages were "rejected"
1 person "changed their display name"
1 person "left"
2 people "joined"
1 "added wiki page"
6 "updated wiki page"
3 people "added photo"
and so on.

Thanks,
Duane

This should be fixed now.
