I like number 1 best. The topics were easy to read.

I don't like the light grey links though - hard to read, especially for anyone with vision problems.

I think the reminder to reply from a specific email should be clearer. It is too light and gets lost above the grey bar.

If it's made an optional setting, then every group owner can decide this for themselves. If it's not made an option, we will get around it anyway by manually resetting the no-email members. So at this point it's simply a convenience issue for mods who want the option.

A Special Announcement is sent immediately. I've only done it as a test on this site, but that's how it worked.

Part of the "problem" is that, as previously discussed, some folks want NO MAIL for ANY reason, not even special announcements. They may be on a limited bandwidth connection, using their office computer to read the group and can't get emails, or something else. I used to agree that having Special Announcements as a minimum would be nice, but after reading the justifications for not wanting that, I've changed my mind and feel that the wishes of the members should be honored. Having said that, I've only sent 2 Special Announcements in the last 10 years (other than the test), both on Yahoo, one of which let folks know that I was leaving because of Y's shenanigans.

locked text re "join group," "apply for membership in this group," "subscribe to this group" - redux

I've created a new group and have begun the process of sending out the group's home page to interest people in joining. I'm again running up against the "join" vs. "apply for membership" vs. "subscribe" issue on the group's home page, and the resulting confusion.

To summarize: on a group's home page, a non-member sees those three options ("join" at the top left, "apply" at the bottom, and the "subscribe" option at the very bottom). Because the "join" and "apply" options stick out more, some people are selecting one of them and - still, or again - being required to create a password in the page that comes up. It's not clear to them that they can just click on "subscribe" at the bottom, and won't need to create one.

The invite page now makes clear to people that they can subscribe without creating a password. I would like a group's home page to make that clear as well.

It seems that we/you are still, or again, distinguishing semantically between "join" and "subscribe," an issue that came up a long time ago and I think was never completely resolved.

I don't care about the semantics, and whether or not "join" and "subscribe" are the same thing, and I think trying to distinguish their meanings in a way that's clear to, and pleases, everyone may be futile. But I think that a group's home page, and/or the subsequent page(s) after clicking on "join" or "apply", should let prospective members know that they DON'T have to create a password to participate.

Otherwise, I'm getting people not wanting to join, or I'm having to clarify this to them after the fact, or I'm losing them without even knowing it because they just don't want to bother.

Thanks.

I've fixed it. When replying to a message on the website, you're taken back to the page you were on. And when posting a new message on the website, you're sent to the group archives.

Since I get digests from the group I know what I like.  The link in Mark's message identified as digest 2 is the one that I prefer.  I do like the blue in digest 1 because it does pick up the outline color of the groups.io logo.  But, I find the digest 2 example easier to read.

yes!!!  that is needed.   I have disallowed no email too.  While my group is small, its still a pain to have to moniter this.

I've had to manually change members' subscription options who choose 'no email.' I personally know a couple of other moderators who also now require this minimum. I woul love a setting 'disallow no-email' (yes or no). That would effectively set the bar at 'special announcements' or 'digest.' BTW, do digest members receive special announcements as part of the digest it as a separate message? I would prefer the latter. I don't know or remember (or care;) how Yahoo did that.

I've decided to disallow 'no email' as a subscription option and require as a minimum 'special announcements' so that I'll be able to reach everyone (or at least, have a better chance of reaching everyone) when I really need to. I second that. I would also change, or simply remove, the words 'there are no hashtags' when there are (or may be) dozens of hashtags, just not any yet used in s message. The wording is misleading and reads as an error.

locked Re: Database beta

Duane

I started adding some records to a test DB.

1. When using the Address field type, it can take awhile to get to the correct Country selection, usually US or Canada for us. On other sites, I can often hit the first letter to be taken to that area of the list. If it's not too much work, I'd like to see that capability added.

2. An additional type of Phone Number would be useful. Either 123-456-7890 or (123)456-7890 format would work for me.

3. To clarify my earlier request, being able to use the popup calendar or type a date in a Date field would be best, though I think it would be difficult to have both.

4. Be able to "compact" a DB would be nice. I made some test rows initially, then deleted them. Now the first row is labeled as '3', then skips to '5'. (It doesn't effect the functionality, but looks a bit strange.)

I'm pretty sure that as we use the feature more, there will be additional comments.

Thanks again,
Duane

locked change 'outstanding' to 'sent' invitations #suggestion

Since the table entitled 'outstanding invitations' also contains invitations that have been accepted, I think this is a misnomer and is misleading/confusing. As a new user I would not know that I could basically look for, and find, •all• invitations sent (until I delete them from the page), whether or not they are 'outstanding.' And when I do see accepted invitations there, I would wonder why they're there, and whether there is still something incomplete about them thst caused them to be listed in 'outstanding.'
An outstanding invitation is one that has not yet been accepted. So I would rename the page.

Diane (and BobbieSue),

When I amasking for an addition email notification I am also adding
extra steps as a owner or moderator.
Pending membership, and the notice that goes with it, is for people that try to join on their own; not for those who accept an invitation.

Question - why would someone need to be approved if they are responding

As I said, they wouldn't.

I didn't see a mention of it, but it looks like the fonts have been changed, and they now fit on the buttons for me.  Thanks!
