Hi Kathy,

When you set an expiration time on a hashtag, that means that each thread that is tagged with that hashtag will expire after the expiration time has passed from the time of the most recent post to that thread. Each thread is evaluated individually. Currently the only way to specify an expiration is via offset from the current time (ie. you can't say 'expire after this month's over').

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I have a question about the thread duration for a hashtag... In my group, we post a lot of messages with attachments. I'd like to use the hashtag feature to sort those by month and then delete after a month. My question is what date does the hashtag use for deleting? the first thread using that hashtag or when each thread was posted?
ie: My hashtag is #April. I post a thread with an attachment on April 1. I post another thread on April 30. Does my April 30 thread get deleted on May 1 - a month after my first thread on April 1...........

I just fixed an issue with this. If it's still not working for you, please send a message to support@groups.io, with the URL of the page containing the message you're trying to reply to, along with the name/type of mobile device you're using.

Thanks,

Also, if they apply to five groups at once, and get five "confirm you want to join" emails (because they sequentially fail to respond to any of them), they're going to end up as pending NC members in all five groups. What then - do all five group owners re-send the confirm emails?

locked Re: NC pending member?

Shal,

I understand that the NC status attaches to the email address's Groups.io membership, not to the email address's membership in a particular group. However, it is related to a membership request in a group (or groups), because that's the point at which they are asked to "confirm you want to join" or "become a member of Groups.io" or whatever (I've just spent five fruitless minutes looking for the unconfirm and remove-account links so I can't test this now and I don't remember the most recent wording. Can you or someone point me to them again so I can test this?)

I guess I'm questioning whether it should work exactly this way. Suppose someone applies only to one group. In that case, if they're NC, it means (to THEM) they have not confirmed that they want to join the group. The two things at that point - becoming a member of Groups.io, and joining the group - are virtually synonymous. Even if the person has applied to join more than one group, the NC status means that they have failed to respond to BOTH emails asking that they want to join.

So here's a person who has not confirmed that they want to join *at all*, and yet they're put into the pending member list. I am not sure it should work that way. Because it leaves the group owner in a quandary: contact the member now to ask if they got the confirm email, even though it's a Groups.io issue? Re-send the confirmation email? Contact the member to ask whether they received the pending member notice? If this is a Groups.io-wide issue rather than a group-specific issue, shouldn't it be up to *Groups.io* to prod them to confirm, rather than to each individual group owner? And if so, I wonder whether they should be added to the pending member list at that point.

locked Re: NC pending member?

J,

What does it mean when a pending member is NC?
An email address (Groups.io account) has NC status until someone receives and responds to the confirmation email messages sent to that address. Respond either by reply or by click-through of a link.

I assume it means they didn't click on "confirm that you want to join
this group", right?
Not exactly. The NC status is related to the email address itself, not to its membership in any particular group. That is, you won't see NC status on an email address that has been confirmed, for example when joining some other group. Or if the user took the steps to confirm it before requesting membership in your group.

If so, why are they even in the pot of pending members?
Among other things, it lets you know they're trying to join. If the NC persists for more than a few minutes I'd say the person needs some assistance - or it wasn't them that submitted their email address.

Should I re-send the confirmation email, or do that after the member
is approved?
I'm not sure if that matters.

If they're NC, would they even get the pending member notice
containing the questionnaire?
Good question. Hopefully they would, even though they can't receive normal group messages while NC.

p.s. And also, the next message in the thread. Little arrows as there are now, but instead of previous and next message in the group as a whole, they would go to previous and next message in the thread.

locked "previous message in thread" button #suggestion

When viewing a single message in Message View, it is really inconvenient, especially when a thread is long and may span multiple pages, to have to display the entire thread (requiring scrolling through all of its pages from the very beginning of it) just in order to see the previous message in it. Could there be a button letting you go back to the previous message in a thread, when in message view? Currently, you can just go back the previous message in the group as whole.

I think most browsers use the darker text for unread, then change to lighter. I'm adapting to the opposite on IO, but would also prefer that it be changed.

John G,

I think there probably is a lot of that. I'm also sure there's many moderators who would prefer that such members select Special Notice instead.

A reason to choose No Mail, rather than Special Notice, is to prevent a non-functional email address from being put on bouncing status. Having a non-functional email address as your group address only makes sense if you're planning to read group messages exclusively from the group's site.

Ronaldo,

I don't think Groups.io sets a policy, any more than Y!Groups do. Rather, they provide tools for the group managers to implement their own policies.

I for one think having members "bouncing' IS a problem that I would want
to be notified about,
I agree, in some of my groups I'd opt-in to a notification for changes in members' bounce status. In other groups I would not.

Yes, it's been very funky and unpredictable for me, too. I haven't nailed down a specific example yet. It always goes by too fast. I'll try to remember next time something weird happens and let you know.
