Hi All,

What do you think of this: a separate group description that's displayed only for members? That is, go to the group home page, and if you're a member, the description is one thing. If you're not a member, the description is what it is now.

As an example, for a company that uses Groups.io groups, they may want to put links to internal corporate sites (for example), on the group home page. This could be accomplished using the Wiki, I know, but having it on the home page would be more convenient, especially if they're using subgroups and have a subdomain.

I'd probably strip away some of the statistics that are currently displayed, as well, for logged in users.

Thoughts? Would you use this?

Thanks,
Mark

I mentioned this off list to Mark (I think it was Mark), but wonder if the Top Posters list is really necessary, or if there could be an option to disable it?  Our group is not the type of group that is competitive about this sort of thing and we don't want that kind of competition. We have one group member, however, who is very proud to be the top poster but a margin of over a thousand!!, and makes many posts per day that are trivial and unneccesary.

I have turned off the Top Posters display for all groups. I can absolutely see how it would be detrimental to the quality of discussions, which isn't good.

Jennifer,

1. I wish there were a "format paintbrush" button similar to the one in
Word -- so that when I paste text in from another source, I can make it
look the same as the main message. Same color, same font, same
whatever.
I like that idea.

2. Likewise, I wish there were a way to indent paragraphs, like you can
in Word. That makes it possible to highlight quotations, for example.
Granted!

See the "Paragraph" button (hover over the buttons to see their names). It drops a menu that has indent and outdent in addition to left, center, right, and justify between margins.

Mark,

I guess I had assumed that emailed messages would contain signatures
already. But maybe not?
Most of the email addresses I use for groups do not have a default signature, for the reason Duane cites: I'd probably want it different in different groups. Too, some groups discourage signatures any larger than just one's name.

Should I add this?
If you do, I'd recommend splitting "Use Signature" into two checkboxes, "Use Signature for web posting" and "Use signature for email posting". Enable the Signature edit box if at least one is checked.

I can't really imagine why someone would use this signature for email and not for web, but two checkboxes seems simpler to me than turning the control into a drop-list with the three more likely choices: "Never", "web" and "both".

Rachel - if you have ever been a member of
an LSoft mailing list - #Hashtags are going
to work like topics/subjects.

LSoft:
TOPIC: subject of the post
(a way for people to opt in or out of seeing
some subjects.)

Hashtags:
#topic: subject of post
You can then mute the ones you don't want -
not sure how to choose just a couple other
than opting out of any but those.

Yep, it was a bug, and it's now fixed. Sorry about that.

Hi Rachel,
Hashtags (#text) are used to make archiving and searching easier. Hashtags
are also used to let forum members get a quick glimpse over the topic
within.
As for top posters option: no decision yet.

Hi all,

I have to admit I have no idea how to use hashtags, or why one would use
them. Any tips are welcome.

I sent out a Bounce Probe because we have 31 members who are bouncing, but I
have no idea what it did or what I should expect from it. Is there something
I'm supposed to do?

One more, was there any decision about getting rid of the Top Posters thing,
or ability to disable it? I missed it if there was.

Thanks!

locked Re: NC pending member?

J,

(I've just spent five fruitless minutes looking for the unconfirm and
remove-account links so I can't test this now and I don't remember
the most recent wording. Can you or someone point me to them again so
I can test this?)
It isn't linked anywhere on the site. Use this link when logged in under the user account (address) you wish to delete.
https://groups.io/deleteuser
https://groups.io/g/beta/message/7300

Suppose someone applies only to one group. In that case, if they're
NC, it means (to THEM) they have not confirmed that they want to join
the group. The two things at that point - becoming a member of
Groups.io, and joining the group - are virtually synonymous.
I'd say more coincident than synonymous, but you're right that to a new user they'd seem much the same.

Even if the person has applied to join more than one group, the NC
status means that they have failed to respond to BOTH emails asking
that they want to join.
Yes, assuming that they are a truly new user (this email address has not been used at Groups.io before).

I think if they are attempting to join via the web site they would only be sent one confirmation request. When they attempt to join the second group they would be told that their email address is already registered, but that they need to confirm it. In this case they'd be directed to the login screen, I think.

If attempting to join via the +Subscribe email address I'm not exactly sure, but I think the precise message they get the second time would be different than the first, again reflecting the fact that Groups.io has seen that address before.

Both of those beliefs could use testing, I haven't looked through my notes yet to see if I have covered this case, but I'm fairly sure I didn't try joining more than one group with an NC address. Ill have to do some looking and/or testing before I can meaningfully get into the your more detailed questions/concerns about this.

That's the quandary. I tend not to use sig's in my email program because they go to various people. What I would use for one wouldn't make any sense to another. I really like having a different one for each group here, where it will mean something. I have a couple of groups where I'm now using "05HD" which means nothing to most of the folks on this group, but is important to other members of those groups. I don't really need one on this group. If I used the same one on all emails, it definitely wouldn't make sense to add another here.

Thanks,
Duane
