Date

locked Re: Search

And speaking of griping: ever since I did a test search and then clicked on "date" to reorder the search results by date, chrono order (oldest displayed first) has turned into the *permanent* default for viewing messages. I have changed it back several times to reverse chrono order by toggling the "date" button, but now, every time I go into my group and switch from thread view to message view, I have to do it again.

Mark, I can contact you offlist if you prefer, but this happened coincidentally with the "relevance" feature so I think it's connected to that (and maybe some inadvertent small bug).

Likewise, Mark's work is helping to save many feline lives. If I am vocal in asking for improvements and wish list items (I cop to that - it's so much fun, especially since Mark is so responsive!), I should be at least 10 times as vocal in expressing my appreciation and thanks - which I hereby do :-)

Shal,

Thank you for answering Deborah's questions. I regret that right now I'm
swamped with Real Life stuff again, so I appreciate all you do to help
with people from MM. It's a comfort to know you're there when I'm not able to be. :)

Hi Mark,

Sorry this has taken so long to reply to. I'm currently swamped with

I'm hoping to get up to speed later this week, as I'm getting a break

Fixed. The problem was with messages from people who aren't registered with Groups.io (i.e. messages transferred from elsewhere by people who were no longer subscribed to the group when the transfer happened).

Mark,

Thanks. Interesting, but it's as I suspected: the number one criterion is frequency. To me, frequency is nearly irrelevant. I want the most recent conversations about things, not the conversations with most number of occurrences of whatever the search term is!

If you do leave "relevance" as the default, I hope there can be a separate toggle so that switching to "date" doesn't disturb all the other message lists in every single group someone is in!

Relevance was never an option before. I had gotten some complaints that it was missing (and I agree, it should be an option). Here's a technical document discussing relevance in terms of the software package I use for search: https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/guide/current/relevance-intro.html

I don't know what the default should be. What do other people think?

Can you give me some more information on how this works? Do you press the button first and then paste the text in, or do you paste the text first, highlight it and then press the button?

Now when entering a message number, it'll stay on Message or Expanded Message View. If you were viewing the results of a search, the search is cleared. The sort order (ascending or descending) is kept the same.

So I gave up and started reading in Single Message View, but then I noticed something else different.  It used to be pressing the ">" button always went to the next message (in post order).  Now it goes to the previous message.  So I started pressing the "<" button to read the messages in order, which isn't how I expected it to work.

In single message view, the next and previous arrows use the sort order from the Messages page that you came from. So if you were viewing from newest to oldest, the next arrow will go back in time, and vice versa. This is so you can go through search results one message at a time. I can understand how it would be confusing, and I'm not sure how to make it better.

Please let me know what you think. There aren't obvious answers for some of these things, so some fumbling around may be required to get everything right.

Thanks,
Mark

locked Re: Search

p.s. Not only that: when I toggled to "date" in my own group for the search results, I was switched to chrono order (rather than reverse chrono order) for *all* messages in *this* group. It again took me several seconds of reading through Shal's suggestion about recommending groups.io to other moderators groups until I realized that the message was from 2014 - the first message in this group.:-)

I don't like that clicking on "date" just to see search results by date changes my preference everywhere to have messages listed from first to last! I will always want to search results by date. I hope there will be a way (preferably by making it the default) for that to happen without having to click on "date" and then back again to see messages in the desired order....???

Hello,

It appears that your Facebook page has no entries. In that case, to us, it looks like the page doesn't exist. Once there's an entry on the page, you should be able to set up the Facebook integrations.

Hope this helps.

Currently the Facebook integration is one way, from Facebook into a Groups.io group. How would you like the reverse integration to work? All messages posted to your group get posted to Facebook? If not all, how would you want to select which ones?

Hi Deborah,

Are there no fils in the files section yet?
Each group would have its own files. If you are refering specifically to beta@ (this group), no - there are no files in this group yet.

I tried to create a database but couldnt do so, perhaps it is not yet
possible?
It is possible to create databases. But here in the beta@ group members don't have permission to create them. If you'd like to try it out you're welcome to join my test group, shalstest.
https://shalstest.groups.io/g/main

Keep in mind that beta@ is a group to discuss the Groups.io service, see the group's Description on the home page:
https://groups.io/g/beta

So this group is primarily for suggestions and bug reports. If you'd like to try out the features of Groups.io you can create your own group for testing or join one that someone else has made. See the "Find or Create a Group" link at the top of the page.

If you'd like to learn about how Groups.io works, and how it differs from Yahoo Groups, there are also groups for that:

https://groups.io/g/Group_Help
https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum
https://mmsanctuary.groups.io/g/main
and probably others that I'm not aware of.

So, welcome, and dive right in - the water's great.

I have some problems with the new changes.

When there are a lot of messages to read, I like to:

1. Note which message number I want to read first.

2. Switch to Expanded Messages Mode.

3. Hit the Date Sort so they're in ascending order. This also shows Message #1 at the top.

4. Enter the message number I wanted to start with in the Search box.

After that, it used to show me the expanded messages in ascending order starting with the message I specified, and I could leisurely press the Page Down key to read them all, going to the next page whenever I hit the bottom, until I got to the most recent message in the group. This showed the messages in the order they were posted.

Now, when I enter the message number, it switches to Single Message View instead of remaining in Expanded Messages mode. If I tell it to go back to Expanded Messages mode, it goes back to Message #1 again.

So I gave up and started reading in Single Message View, but then I noticed something else different. It used to be pressing the ">" button always went to the next message (in post order). Now it goes to the previous message. So I started pressing the "<" button to read the messages in order, which isn't how I expected it to work.

Is there another good way to read messages in posted order in Expanded Messages mode starting with a specific message number?

Thanks,

JohnF

Hi All,

As I just mentioned in a reply to someone, I just pushed a bunch of updates to archive search. Probably the biggest change is that, when first doing a search, you're no longer taken to a special page that shows some thread and message matches. Instead, you're kept in the view that you're currently in (Threads/Messages/Expanded Messages). You can switch between the views and the search is remembered, and we try to remember your place as well when switching between the different message views (going from Threads to Messages or vice versa doesn't remember where you were). For example, you can page through single messages in a search and then go back to the Message or Expanded Message views and it should display the current message as the first one.

Also with search, we used to display the results sorted by relevance initially, but if you switched to date sort, you couldn't go back to a relevance sort. There's now a Relevance link to re-sort by relevance.

And also, searching by author does not currently work. I hope to have that fixed later this week or some time next week (it's unfortunately a big fix).

Thanks,
Mark

I just pushed to the site a bunch of improvements to searching archives and navigating between the different views during a search. We're trying hard to keep your place while switching views and paging around. Also, with searches, in addition to being able to sort by Date, you can now sort by Relevance as well.

During this, I discovered an issue with searching for authors, which you've also experienced. I hope to have that fixed later this week.

Thanks,
Mark
