locked "your subscription has not been approved" banner displays for wrong group #bug

 

If I click on a group for which my membership has not yet been approved, the banner "your subscription has not yet been approved" banner does not come up. However, it DOES come up for any subsequent group I click on (and which I'm a member of). It goes away only after I click on some function within the group.

(Note: I thought I was imagining this at first. But since I applied for membership in a group that seems to be inactive, and it's been a week or two since I applied to it, I've seen the behavior several times now.)

If you click on a member to see their posts, the first 20 come up fine. At the bottom, the page says "1 - 20 of X" (where X is their total number of posts). followed by links ("2, 3, 4, …") to see the rest of their posts in groups of 20. However, when you click on page 2, the display reverts to the message list of the group as a whole.

1) Owners (and moderators if so designated) can edit this text.혻 If they do so, a bright red message appears at the top of the message page saying, "This group's Code of Conduct varies from the Groups.io default.혻 Please read it carefully." (or words to that effect).혻
2) The message by default is auto-emailed out to new members when they are added.혻 Allowing disabling this feature would not be something I would recommend, but I suppose if you countered it's removal with a different auto-emailed message stating that "this group does not auto-send Code of Conduct info out, please see the CoC page here (link), or contact the group's owner for more info." (OWTTE) you could allow it.혻 I think that would weaken it's impact past my comfort level though.
3) Owners (and mods if designated) have the ability to manually send the CoC to the group or to a select person (or list of persons) ideally right from the CoC screen.

4) Ability to autosend the CoC at regular intervals if the group wants to set that up.

This way, you encourage but don't tie down creativity, freedom of expression, etc., encourage responsible behavior, and also reduce the burden of enforcement. The last thing you want is to get embroiled in what constitutes a "knee-jerk reaction" on a system with a likes feature and easy "quick reply" features which encourage knee-jerk responses.
Let the TOS be the arbiter of the allowable content (your pervue of enforcement), and the Mods be the arbiters of etiquette via the CoC (their pervue), and the Members be thus empowered to act in a fully informed manner (our own inherent responsibility). Getting more complex than that would be a can o worms you may not want, or be able to keep up with.

Hi Mark,
I read link 1. I can see that this is somewhat different to the privacy policy, and terms of service. Its basically what is expected. I am neutral about the idea. If it is a high request, I can't see why. All I will say, though, is if someone wants to be rude, something like this will not stop them, as hard we try. Bassed on past experience, some don't even read the guide lines. I'm one of them, but then again, most of us know what is right and wrong. Those that don't, will not care, either.

me know which parts of those Codes you like or don't like and I'll start
cobbling something together. If you have a favorite Code of Conduct from
somewhere else, please share it as well.

I've tagged this with the #CoC hashtag, so you can ignore discussions about
this if you wish.

that does right now is trick Gmail (and some other services) so show you
your own message. The checkbox is checked by default.

Regardless of whether the checkbox is checked, if you're on digest, you
still see your own messages in the digest. If you're on single, we still
send the message to you, regardless of the setting.

Should that change? If you uncheck the box, should you not see your
messages in digests? Should I not send the message to you in single mode
either?

Janice,

I have been in touch with Mark about this and I feel (and I think
he agrees) the problem revolves around the buttons and wording on the
Posting page. I have had members wonder why their messages did not show
up on the group. After discussing things with them, I realize they are
clicking on Post instead of scrolling to the bottom and clicking on
Send. To many people Post is the same as Send.
Oh.

In that case I would suggest that the Post button be careful, and if the user is already on the Post Message page it should put up a "You haven't sent this message" banner, or something like that, without disturbing any content the user may have already put into the Subject or message body boxes.

That would clue the user that the buttons on the left are for changing pages, not taking actions. It would also give the user an opportunity to look again and connect the word "sent" in the message with the word "Send" in the button below the message box.

Also, by the same logic, the Home and other buttons in the left column should give the user a warning or "are you sure" pop-up or something if the user tries to switch away from the Post Message page with any content typed into that page. Right now they also cause the user's text to be discarded, which could be a big disappointment.

  • CHANGE: Added some formatting to the Post page to try to make it more clear which buttons to press to send the message.
  • CHANGE: Formatting change in terms of service.
  • NEW: Rename all Received: headers to X-Received: in outbound messages.
  • BUGFIX: We were not sending email encrypted.
  • CHANGE: With a digest subscription, if you mute a thread, we delete any pending digest messages from that thread.

Definitely wanted to include Twitter, but we don't get access to the email address used to register with Twitter, so we have no way of correlating it to an existing Groups.io account. With Facebook and G, when you log in using those services, we get back the email address used to register with those services.

I know other services do things like ask you to enter an email address after logging in with Twitter, but I haven't had a chance to really investigate that login flow and see how it'd fit in here.

 
P.S. when you sign in with FB or G, your e-mail still always sends to the e-mail address you used to create your groups.io account, right? I wouldn't want the mail to go to FB or G.

I have a simple fix for it. In my TSS group for Young and Restless, the button for post is labeled "New Topic" and the button to send a reply to a post is called "Send"

If Mark changed the wording on the pencil icon button to the left, to either New Post or New Topic, I think that would eliminate the confusion.
