Member's subgroup links not working #bug

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

when I view a member's record, I see their Groups.io member number after the /member/ part of the URL.  If I then use the Subgroups button to list the subgroups they are members of, hovering my mouse pointer over each of the subgroups listed shows the URL with the main group name although the member number changes. Clicking any of the links just takes you back to the main group member list rather than the going to the member's record in the subgroup as I think it should be doing.

Andy

Re: Draft of message to member from "pending message ---> send message" inaccessible/unopenable #bug

BTW I can reproduce this. I just ran a test in my test group. It happens every time.

Retain sort order when changing Activity Log views #suggestion

Andy Wedge

Hi Mark,

when viewing the Activity Log and switching views using the different Activity type buttons (All Activity, Message Activity, Member Activity etc.) the sort order always switches to Created - Ascending. Can we retain the current sort order when changing views please?

Thanks
Andy

Draft of message to member from "pending message ---> send message" inaccessible/unopenable #bug

I drafted a message to a member from within their pending (not yet approved) message page, went out of it to check the pending message again, and went back into my drafts to continue working on it. But the draft, although it appeared by name in the drafts folder, was unclickable/unopenable and I had to delete it and start over. I seem to remember some messages here about drafts disappearing (or having to be deleted for some reason?) but couldn't find them.

On my Russian-language group with restricted membership most messages to +owner from prospective members is with .ru domains. I need those messages. It's the first step of subsription instructions on my personal webpage: to email +owner, next step is to email +subscribe. Most prospective members don't understand English and cannot navigate the groups.io website to request subscription via web.

Please make this filter optional in Settings. Default drop is okay, but I need a toggle to turn it off.

Thank you, Andy and Duane!

Yes, that was it. By selecting that one message, I was able to edit it and remove all the extra HTML in the message. After that, everything shows up as normal. Somehow all that HTML caused the rest of the page after the message to appear broken. Looks good after editing. Again, thanks for your help!

After further checking it does seem like #73008 contains a lot of unusual stuff that makes the display confusing. It appears as though it's showing #73008 and the message before is #73007. However if you just open #73008 on it's own and then use the left/right arrow buttons either side of the message number you can go forward to #73009 but back one message takes you to #73005. Messages #73006 & #73007 do not exist (as can also be confirmed by using the Messages view) so #73007 at least appears to have been deleted after #73008 was posted. Confirmation of when #73006 & #73007 were deleted should be in the Activity log.

Paul,

I agree with Duane.  It looks to me that message #73008 contains considerable HTML, including graphics and clickable links and buttons.  If you open just that one message (https://groups.io/g/Losmandy_users/message/73008) without the rest of the Topic around it, you can see it.

It’s not a screen shot, since the buttons are clickable and text selectable.

Regardless, it doesn’t explain why the content following is a reverse order of the same topic. I can’t see any messages slightly older than 73008, since the next message shown is the first message in the whole thread.

It looks to me like message 73008 is nothing but a screen shot/copy&paste, so all the Mute, etc. is part of what was sent.  Makes no difference which way it's sorted, that's the contents of that message.

I've received two more of Aleksandr's spam messages in Russian.  Maybe the following will help.

In response to Andy's comment, maybe allowing them could be made an option for each group, but even in the absence of doing that, blocking the +owner mail from .ru seems greatly beneficial on balance.  My co-moderator and I really appreciate it!

As a reminder, you can set your subscription so that you only receive emails sent to the +owner address from members of your group.

That said, we're now dropping all messages sent from non-members with .ru domains to +owner addresses.

OK - I can see what you are saying with the exception that it's that way regardless of whether I am logged in to Groups.io or not.  It looks like some corruption in message #73008 that is causing the issue. Definitely one for Mark to look at I think.

Another clue that points to this taking place is even if the admin sets their +owner email option to "members only" they still get the reply to the pending notice sent from the applicant.

>>> Mark's message says that all messages to your "+owner" address from Russian (.ru) addresses will now be blocked.

Not quite; Mark's message said from non-members, not from everyone from that domain.

>>> If those replies during the joining process are blocked they will never be able to join!

I could be wrong on this, but it seems the moment one clicks on "Join" the system treats them as "members" right-away albeit not yet approved (provided of course "Restricted Membership" is ON).  This is why even if they haven't been approved yet, they can still set their group subscription message delivery options, I mean they are landed in that group subscription page after all, to me that means they are "members" but not yet fully capable (i.e. approved) of "accessing" all group functionality.  So it seems to me their messages wouldn't be subject to this new restriction.

I guess Mark would have to clarify what happens in this special case.

Cheers,
Christos

The funny thing is that this is just part of the problem: this is a single screen shot, showing a single topic in the browser. Here's the thread, try it for yourself (just make sure to sort it in date-decreasing order):

Dave,

Mark's message says that all messages to your "+owner" address from Russian (.ru) addresses will now be blocked.  He wasn't talking about messages sent to the regular group address.

It looks like you will need to devise another method for group sign-ups.  Or convince Mark to change his mind.  Or kiss many Russian hams goodbye.

Re: Spam messages from "Aleksandr via group." #misc

It depends what you mean by 'messages'. All the groups I mange only
members can reply to posts. But when somebody wishes to join they are
requested to email the owner to give some details so we can decide
whether to approve their membership. My amateur radio groups are
international and I can certainly expect members with .ru addresses. If
those replies during the joining process are blocked they will never be
able to join!

Although I understand the desire to cut down on unwanted junk, that
seems discriminatory.  Russia is a populous country and I'm sure there
are people there who are not 'bad actors'.  (I may be somewhat biased,
as I co-moderate a group with a rather international subscriber base so
I have had to think more cosmopolitan.)

Unexpected muted topic message in the middle of a topic #bug

Paul Kanevsky

A few recent messages are muted, as if I muted the topic. Except that I didn't, and only some of the messages are muted this way. (See the second message in the screenshot below):

  1. Using browser and web interface (desktop and mobile, Chrome and Safari)
  2. Muted Topics menu shows that You have no muted topics
  3. Muted Hashtags shows that You have not muted any hashtags
  4. Message showing ×Your message has been sent instead of the actual message from the poster (I didn't send any messages)
  5. Clicking on "Unmute this Topic" button doesn't seem to do anything, same strange message remains
  6. I'm the group owner
If I log out from GIO and go to the same topic, I can see all the messages without any muted content.
