I am hearing reports (and I hope incorrect ones) that using things like the "Mute this Thread" link at the end of a message is causing some sort of prompting for visiting the website and logging

You can prevent them from posting in the main group that way, but you can't stop them from reading its messages. They can do so either by visiting its archive (unless no one can) or by changing

The 'problem' with that is that anyone in the sub-group has to be a member of the main group and there's nothing to prevent them from posting there. You might want to put all of those in the

I agree totally re not notifying people - that would be bad. My worry is that duplicate messages confuse and the sub-group would never be an active part of the main group

I don't think we want to go down the path of "Allow adding users to a group without notifying the users that they have been added to a group," but you could make a custom welcome message for the main
